“Will I Ever Be Able To Sing?” is a work for solo cello and live electronics spatialised in 360 using D&B soundscape, by composer Aaron Holloway Nahum, performed by cellist Louise McMonagle.

With D&B soundscape speakers surround the audience, and the electronic sounds are placed at exact points in the space and can drift or spin around the room, while the cello remains a live, amplified voice at the centre. Rather than coming from a left and right speaker, the sound seems to exist in the room around you.

This pieces sees two long time collaborators work together to explore the purpose of the cello in an era of electronic music. The title refers to a much loved @maryoliverofficial poem, “I Worried”. The music is high energy and bombastic with punchy electronics and frenetic extended techniques on the cello. The mood gradually melts into a mellow soundscape, but always with an edge.

Commissioned with thanks to the Vaughan Williams Foundation and the Marchus Trust. Premiered September 2024 at Kings Place London.

Watch the whole performance now on YouTube, link in bio. Headphones are recommended for the full experience.

It’s hard to choose a moment from this multi faceted piece for cello and electronics by @aaronhnahum, so I may have to share a few ahead of its arrival on YouTube later this week!

Commissioned in 2024 with thanks to @vwfndn_ and the Marchus Trust. Every composer has their own way in to a new piece, and this one began with a series of interview style questions from Aaron to me. The title takes its name from a much loved @maryoliverofficial poem 🖤

There are such technical quirks to left hand pizzicato during a melodic line! So interesting to see how the hand manoeuvres and seeks solutions! 🤓
