Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND) is excited to announce the opening of "Monica Majoli: Countervision." On view September 19 - November 21 at The June L. Mazer Lesbian Archives (@mazerlesbianarchives) in West Hollywood, the exhibition brings together a suite of new drawings by Monica Majoli (@mmajoli3) with materials from the Mazer curated by the artist. ⁠
⁠
This exhibition grew out of archival research Majoli conducted throughout the United States, mining the collections of lesbian photographers Joan E. Biren (JEB), Tee A. Corinne, Honey Lee Cottrell, and Ruth Mountaingrove. Between 1979 and 1983, these artists led and participated in the Ovulars, a series of workshops at Rootworks, a feminist lesbian commune in rural Oregon. For "Countervision," Majoli presents a series of new drawings sourced from photographs taken during the Ovulars. ⁠

Alongside her drawings, Majoli has curated objects from the Mazer's holdings of Sisterhood Bookstore, a feminist community hub that operated in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Westwood from 1972 until 1999. As a young woman growing up in Los Angeles and coming into her sexuality, Majoli and her worldview were deeply influenced by Sisterhood Bookstore. It was there, as a teenager, that she first encountered images of lesbians living full lives, including photographs by the artists who participated in the Ovulars.⁠

Bringing together the Ovulars and Sisterhood Bookstore, Majoli continues her ongoing exploration of sexuality, memory, and precarity through the engagement of archival materials. ⁠

ANNOUNCEMENT

Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND) is thrilled to announce “Harrison Kinnane Smith: Qualified Opportunity.” For his project, comprised of a new publication and three public programs, 2026 Mohn LAND Grant recipient Harrison Kinnane Smith examines how the federal Opportunity Zone program shapes real estate use and ownership in the West Adams neighborhood of South Los Angeles. Started in 2017, the Opportunity Zone program offers tax incentives for private real estate investment in designated census tracts knows as Qualified Opportunity Zones (QOZs).

Smith focuses on Fundrise, one of the world’s largest real estate private equity investors and platforms, and its instrumentalization of QOZs. HIs extensive research is compiled in “Qualified Opportunity: Fundrise Commercial Investments in West Adams, Los Angeles (2017-2026),” a publication that includes photographs and real estate data culled from county records, indexing every commercial property purchased by Fundrise in the Jefferson Boulevard corridor of central Los Angeles since the Opportunity Zone program began.

To mark the book’s release, join LAND on Thursday, August 27 from 7-9PM at Reparations Club (@reparations.club), for a conversation between Smith and interdisciplinary artist Cauleen Smith. The pair will discuss the book, as well as their ongoing exploration of race and real estate in West Adams.

“along the high embankments,” a site-specific installation by Cole Sternberg (@colesternberg) on the property of Presqu’ile Winery (@presquilewine) in Santa Maria, is on view now through November 8. Like the process of winemaking, Sternberg’s paintings emerge from an alchemical transformation. Made in collaboration with the elements - soil, wind, sun, and water - they reveal themselves over time. The installation becomes a record of this place, this moment. Just as the landscape is shaped by both natural and human interventions, it will continue to evolve.

Admission is free and open to the public. Reservations for one-hour time slots are available every Saturday and Sunday from 12-5PM. Please tap the link in our bio to learn more.

Mark your calendar for the final program as part of Harrison Kinnane Smith’s “Qualified Opportunity.”

On Saturday, October 24, LAND presents a lecture by researcher and architect Masha Hupalo (@mashahupalo) titled “The Me Decade” Never Ended.

Some of the most important foundations of today’s dynamic real estate profit capture in LA were laid in the 1970s, “the Me Decade,” linked to the rights revolution, Watergate, and oil shortages. More obscure in public memory are Richard Nixon’s suspension of all federal housing subsidy programs and announcement that foreign-held U.S. dollars would no longer be convertible to gold, turning them into fiat money with no intrinsic value. Locally, Californians started a tax revolt, and Los Angeles moved toward anti-growth policies.

Hupalo’s lecture draws attention to the different scales, situations, and moods of the commonly perceived pessimistic ‘70s, and to how they brought us to the speculative present of housing.

The evening featured a conversation between Smith and Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary artist Cauleen Smith (@cauleen_smith) at Reparations Club (@reparations.club).

In 2023, LAND and LACE (@welcometolace) co-presented "Gemidos de la Tierra (Wailing of the Land/Soil)" by Jackie Amézquita. The artist created a mobile public installation of twelve panels with names of immigrants that died in ICE detention centers. The names of the deceased are created with soil from the state where the individual died, and combined with cornflour (masa), salt and rain water to symbolize that despite their death these individuals still inhabit a physical space. ⁠
⁠
During a weekend caravan across Los Angeles, Jackie drew attention to detention centers and pro-immigrant mutual aid organizations. ⁠
⁠
We're thrilled to hear the news that the project is continuing to expand. The Art, Design & Architecture Museum at UC Santa Barbara (@adamuseum) will debut the inaugural museum presentation of "Gemidos de la Tierra (Wailing of the Land/Soil)" on August 26, 2026 curated by Ana Briz (@anaextina).
