I’ve been sitting on a version of this letter for a while. What a joy to get it out in the world.

If you are a student, I hope you have at least one favorite teacher—one who challenges you, brings you hope, makes you feel seen, or just knows, inherently, that it gets hard out there sometimes. If you are a teacher, I hope you have at least one favorite student who does the same.

What a treasure it is to pay attention, even on the days when the noticing threatens to rip you in two.

@flyingfloorward is your go-to guy for encouragement and care. He’ll spin you in circles until you’re dizzy about whether or not cereal is a soup. His love language is the question — What is dance? On his best days he’ll love you and on his worst days he’ll love you too; I’ve never met someone who exudes that quality so thoroughly. He can teach you how to walk on your hands and he makes a kick ass breakfast potato. He’s also freakishly good at rescuing kittens. If you see him today, kindly sing him a sea shanty—full-out, with feeling. 🎂 🎉

There was a time when I hoped my future job title would be ballerina-penguin. Then, for a while, it was a veterinarian. I accidentally wrote an essay in 7th grade about wanting to become a professional dancer some day. The desire scratched out of my pencil without my giving it permission. The page said go, and I said okay.

I choose work that lets me spout thoughts past my fingertips. Most days, I want to hug a tree and touch the ground with my bare feet. When I grow up, I want to be the ocean and a vagabond. I want the soul of a berry kissing a hornet on a dare. Every day, I am my mother’s daughter: alive, in action, waiting for little and doing to keep from standing still. “To keep being,” she says. “When I grow up, I want to keep being more of me.”

Emmy x Macy, Apply Pressure and Wait

This is the first time we’ve set one of our duets on another pair and man oh man did these two deliver.

It feels so good to see a work change hands. Choreography lives in its doing. Hopefully, many generations and iterations of the things we love get to be danced. We’re stoked to help direct the pathways by which others can come to dance more. We get to make things, and pass them on, and isn’t that what our physical history is really about? The moving is never done. And what a glorious thing that is.

Ems and Mace— We adore you and are so thrilled you said yes to performing Apply Pressure. Thank you for your work ethic, artistry, and commitment.

J— Thank you for setting this entire dance and running rehearsals and managing tech and taking care of a neonatal cat at the same time. You are next level ❤️

Jessie and the BOOT Squad — Congratulations on a successful second year of Break-In. We loved working with you. The communication and organizational aspects of this engagement were particularly spot on.

Someone asked if we were dating the other day so clearly this work friendship is going well 💕 🏔️ 🪓 👯‍♀️

Things we love to do:
1) Hang with the @appalachianmountainclub Vols! (Obviously!)
2) Eat “brown lunch” (breakfast in a bag)
3) Listen to Lil Wayne — mostly just “Snakes”
4) Carry big rocks
5) Handstands (with no help at all)
6) Stay out of the blood bagel
7) Remember the first aid kit
8) Stop at Cumberland Farms for iced tea
9) Play trail games (“perfect in every way” and “Taco/Cat” are faves)
10) Eat @supersecreticecream !

Also, we have matching piercings and they get infected all the time and when they get infected, we call the situation “kimchi ear.”
