Not all ghosts live in old houses. Some live in poorly designed ones: cold corners, dark rooms, wobbly furniture. The good news? Every one of them can be chased away with good design and a little care. by @nopaldesign

Is sustainable design more expensive? Not necessarily.
Sometimes, it does require more investment, but seeing it in that way is only half of what it really is.
✦ A project thought from the beginning avoids corrective expenses and subsequent redesigns.
✦Sustainability is not an extra that is added to the end, it’s a decision that is made from the very first step.
✦ When designed with a long-term vision, the savings are seen economically and environmentally.
Have you asked yourself this before? Let us know what do you think!

¿Es el diseño sustentable más costoso? No necesariamente.

BOOK READS by nopal design
October's Pick: The Architecture of Happiness by Alain de Botton
How do the spaces we inhabit shape who we are and how we feel?
This month, we're reading The Architecture of Happiness, a book that explores the relationship between architecture, identity, emotions, and our everyday lives.
One of its central ideas is that architecture does more than fulfill functional needs. It also reflects our values, aspirations, and ideas about how we want to live.
As we begin reading, we'd like to share a few questions worth reflecting on:

1. Can the spaces we inhabit make us happier?.
2. What do our aesthetic preferences reveal about our identities and values?.
3. Do architects and designers have a responsibility to contribute to a better quality of life? If so, how can that responsibility be expressed through design?.

We'll explore these questions and more in our upcoming book review on Substack. Stay tuned!

IN THE MEANTIME, A READING SUGGESTION:
Try keeping a reading journal. Writing down your thoughts can help you engage more deeply with the text, challenge your assumptions, and develop your own perspective.
Here are four ways to approach your reading:
01 / Comprehension
What is the author's main argument? What ideas are being presented?
02 / Philosophy
What philosophical concepts or questions emerge from the text?
03 / Critical Thinking
Which ideas resonate with you? Which ones would you challenge, and why?
04 / Design & Architecture
How can you connect what you've read to your own experiences or creative practice?
Reading isn't just about understanding an author's perspective. It's also an opportunity to question, reflect, and develop our own.

Would you like to read with us? We'd love to hear your thoughts.

The issue isn’t eco intent.
It’s the system behind it.

Products designed to be replaced, not maintained.
To feel better, not last longer.

When design ignores real use,
sustainability turns into a label instead of a solution.

For those who design, specify, or choose products:
the real question isn’t how green it looks,
but what kind of behaviour it encourages.

/
