Attention climbers

2026 peregrine falcon closures are lifted on the Central Wall of Lover’s Leap

(And at West Chimney on Sugarloaf)

Our falcons appear to have had two successful fledglings this year. Despite some tough weather they were very active and can be seen flying hunting and having a speedy time in the air many days.

All climbs on Central Wall are now open.

Please continue to respect our birds by not approaching or disturbing the falcons if you see them.

Please do not fly drones at the cliff. We have many bird species common and rare including a Golden Eagle which I just spotted for the first time this year last week.

Remember that the Central Wall is slightly more adventurous, dirtier and less climbed. Be bold and brave but be careful and attentive.

Enjoy and check us out for Lover’s Fest this next weekend Aug 1! taken in Lover's Leap by @norcalcrags

Huge thank you to the V.R. supporters for volunteering their time to do trail work at Lover’s Leap! 🛠️🌲 And a MASSIVE thank you to @livinontheledge for guiding the way!

We learned so much about the immense effort that goes into trail maintenance, the severe impact on our local environment when people carelessly venture off-trail, and how we can all become better stewards of the land we love to recreate on.

Overall, it was a fun, eye-opening, and constructive experience for us. We look forward to doing more with @norcalcrags to continue making a positive impact on our local communities and environments ✌🏾

🦅🎉 THE BIRDS HAVE LEFT THE NEST... AND THE CLIFFS ARE OPEN!🧗

It's official! As of July 17, all 2026 Yosemite peregrine falcon and golden eagle climbing closures have been lifted.

A huge thank you to everyone who respected the seasonal closures and gave these incredible birds the space they needed to successfully raise the next generation of Yosemite raptors. Because of your cooperation, it's been another fantastic nesting season!

2026 by the numbers:
- 15 confirmed nests
- 18 breeding pairs across 23 territories
- 6 new alternate nest sites discovered
- A brand-new territory documented at *Le Conte Wall* in Hetch Hetchy
- The Yosemite Point pair returned to their historic nest on *Lost Arrow Spire* for the first time since 2019
- The Rostrum pair kept things interesting by choosing their *third nest site* in the territory's 32-year history
- And the monitoring program reached an incredible milestone with its *86th documented peregrine nest site* since 1978!

This season is a reminder of just how resilient these birds are—and how much conservation efforts matter. A huge thank you to the *Yosemite Conservancy*, *Yosemite Climbing Rangers*, *Fire & Aviation*, *Law Enforcement & Protection*, dedicated volunteers, and the entire Yosemite climbing community for helping make this another successful nesting season.

Now... go enjoy those walls! Climb responsibly, respect wildlife, and have an amazing season.

Check out the youtube video link in our FB profile about Yosemite's peregrine falcons.

🚨 2026 Bird Closure Update 🚨

All 2026 seasonal bird closures have been lifted except for the Rostrum.

The Rostrum peregrine falcon pair has had a challenging nesting season and began nesting later than they have at any point in the territory’s 32-year history.

🪺 The Rostrum closure remains in effect while the nest site continues to be monitored. The area will reopen as soon as conditions allow. Thank you for respecting this temporary closure and helping protect Yosemite’s nesting birds.

Closure Area:
📍 The Rostrum – Lower Merced Canyon

* All climbing routes on all sides of the Rostrum formation remain closed.
* ✅ Super Nova and Jungle Gym remain open.
* ❌ Slacklining is prohibited on the summit and the top of the adjacent cliff.

The current closure is scheduled through August 1, but it may be lifted sooner or extended depending on nesting activity.

Please check for the latest updates before planning your climb.

For questions about current bird closures or to confirm whether the Rostrum closure has been lifted or extended, please contact the Yosemite Management Team at yose_peregrines@nps.gov.

Lover’s Leap Campground is open for the season. We have a new host - say hi & play nice.

Day use $10 & overnight camping $36 stay same as last year. Costs have remained stable for several years despite confusion around which passes provide discounts - we will clarify ASAP. Water & bathrooms are open.

Please be bear aware - last year bad food storage led to a bear being caught & euthanized. We’d all like to avoid that - there are bear boxes, please use them. We replaced the carabiner on the dumpster twice last season because it got stolen - please don’t do that.

Please be fire conscious - it’s shaping up to be a bad fire year. Consider skipping your campfire esp if windy, keep fires in metal rings & dead them out completely. Every year locals put out multiple camp fires that are left burning. Everyone is worried about this fire season.

Over the past three months @loversleapguides @strawberrystationca & CRAGS have donated time + money to clean & restock the bathrooms.

Over the last 3 years we have negotiated with Royal Elk & EldoNF to have the bathrooms remain unlocked over-winter which has reduced the amount of literal shxt we find out at the crag. I carried a full wag bag out from the East Wall last week left behind by someone… Open bathrooms have only been possible because of the relationships we’ve built with the FS personnel who are often on our side - recreationalists - and not the side of ‘the man’ or rising costs - they’re understaffed, underfunded & under-resourced.

I have been asked by a number of locals in South Lake & Strawberry to remind everyone that there is NO CAMPING including #vanlife on the SLIPPERY FORD road - which is signed.

There is also no camping on Strawberry Lane. There is free dispersed camping on FS land.

Falcon closures remain in effect for the Central Wall. Birds are nesting just right of the first pitch belay of Eagle Buttress. Lover’s Chimney & Bookmark are outside of the closure and are open.

@strawberrystationca Burger Night runs every Saturday. 6-9pm. $5 burgers.

Save the date —> Lover’s Fest Annual Party returns Saturday Aug 1st!

We’re hanging out @theboulderfield today for @usaclimbing divisionals

It’s rainy so even though we’d rather be climbing rocks it’s fun to see the powerhouse climbers of the next generation pulling down for a spot at nationals.

Big thanks to @theboulderfield for their ongoing donations and support to help local access and stewardship work. We can’t do it without community partners and support. @carlodenali @theboulderfield and team have been consistent supporters - huge thanks!

If you climb outside then it’s imperative that you join the @accessfund - get a joint membership with your local climbing organization like us @norcalcrags or our partners in Tahoe @tahoeclimbingcoalition or the Bay @bayareaclimberscoalition

We need your dollars locally as much as the AF needs your support nationally so don’t be afraid to hit the links in bio and drop a tip in our jar. It’s tax deductible so that makes it cool.

When you’re out at the crag remember that your small impact isn’t so small anymore now that there are 10million active climbers in the US. Let us know if you see an issue. Keep an eye out for closures and take care of the local communities where we recreate.

Keep an eye out as we start rolling out our spring summer and fall schedule.

We have trail days and other events coming up and we will need your help!

See you all at the gym or on the rock… taken in The Boulder Field by @norcalcrags

FALCON CLOSURE
Attention Climbers!

Please respect nesting falcons!

*Peregrine Falcons are nesting right of Eagle Buttress*

PLEASE AVOID ALL routes on the Central Wall formation from
Rated X to the Hourglass inclusive.

 Climbing closure includes all Rated X, all Eagle Buttress and all Hourglass routes.

 Falcons will protect their nests. Please respect closures; keep your distance. Do NOT fly drones.

 Be aware and avoid any routes where falcons are aggressive in defending their nests.

 Thank you for helping to protect Peregrine Falcons and climbing access at Lover’s Leap.

Falcon monitoring is a joint effort between Eldorado NF, @norcalcrags and @loversleapguides

Please report issues to info@norcalcrags.org

This closure is smaller and more specific for the past few years because we’ve taken an active role in monitoring and reporting using behavioral ecology as basis for the closures - rather than larger longer blanket closures of the past. Help us keep it smaller and reopening sooner by following best practices and avoiding the closure area.

Thanks everyone. Happy early climbing season. taken in Lover's Leap by @norcalcrags

Fun day out at the Leap today helping prepare for the very early opening of climbing season here.

Big thanks to everyone for doing our best work as a user group to try to mitigate impact in the early season.

Staying on trails can be harder in the spring but just as important. Some snow, lots of water and many many down trees cover our trails. We will be out working with locals @loversleapguides and @strawberrystationca helping clear some trails and keeping the campground in working order until it opens later in spring.

Campground is closed and there is limited parking. Be mindful and try to optimize parking down on Strawberry Lane. There is no water in the campground.

But bathrooms are open thanks to some negotiations we’ve had with our partners at Eldorado National Forest. @norcalcrags @loversleapguides and @strawberrystationca are working together to help keep the campground clean. You can help us too. Pack out your trash and bring a spare roll of toilet paper. Keep it clean and it won’t be dirty!

We will be gearing up for some trail work this season so keep an eye out for dates posted soon.

Lovers Fest annual fundraiser and party will be Aug 1 with some fun free clinics on Aug 2.

@strawberrystationca is open and serving coffee snacks and après beers. They’ve got climbing gear too. Stop in and say hi and thanks.

Links in bio to donate to @norcalcrags and more great things coming this season so keep an eye out.

Thanks everyone. Have a great climbing season. taken in Lover's Leap by @norcalcrags

Season opener this weekend here at the Leap - some of you have been out and about already! It’s prime. It was gorgeous today - shorts and T-shirts or sun hoodies all around.

There’s barely any snow left - just a little bit at the base of some shadier walls and on the shady aspects up top and on the descents. Classic wet spots are wet but not that much and both the Pony Express and East Wall Descent have a bunch of running water. Most trails are passable but there are a lot of down trees so heads up and try to stay on trail.

Campground is closed and will be for a while. Parking is available at the pullout down on Strawberry Ln but please be mindful as this is private property and a residential neighborhood. No parking at all on the road up to the campground (Strawberry Ct). Consider carpooling and dispersed camping on NF land is the best option.

Campground bathrooms are open! @loversleapguides @norcalcrags and @strawberrystationca are teaming up to clean the bathrooms and stock toilet paper. We got the dumpster set up today as well. Please pack out your trash and keep the bathrooms clean.

It’s Spring - Watch out for dead trees and loose rock. Pull down not out. Climb light, climb smart and have a great season!

We’ve got a slew of programs coming up so check out the website and insta. We are available for private guiding and courses or all kinds.

Trail work days will be posted soon.

And of course Lover’s Fest returns Aug 1 and 2! See you there!
