Such a fun weekend working on a location scout for a commission near Cuchara, CO and the Spanish Peaks. Dawn got to play with her new FujiFilm camera, @sunnybasket has an awesome eye and I love her reference photos for their unique compositions. We have passed through this area before but never had the chance to stay. We highly recommend! We took the Ginny wagon and she rocked it on all the muddy dirt roads as we chased the light from sunrise to sunset. taken in Cuchara, Colorado by @normshearer

My daughter @kaya.shearer saw this painting I did last year and fell in love with it. Looks great in her place! “Wild Sunflowers” oil on two canvases. I started painting the left one and thought it would be fun to extend it more.

What an honor to paint this commission and be a part of this family’s awesome collection. Side note - these collectors wanted this composition but asked if I could use a palette from a previous painting they liked. “Sure!” I said. It was beaten into me in art school that if you nail the values and the composition you can alter the colors at will. What a fun reminder. Enjoy the sunshine and mountain breezes! “Baldy in Summer” 44 x 32, oil on canvas.

I was not loving where this was heading. Just didn’t feel right. Instead of pushing through and settling I wiped the canvas and started over. One could say I wasted 4 hours of work, went backwards and I could have thrown a fit. But I had this weird reaction and I actually felt joy and reward in the restart and didn’t even think about the previous days efforts. I was invigorated in the thought to chase my vision for this piece and not stress about my overpainting error. One of my absolute favorite creatives Paula Scher says, “It’s through mistakes that you actually can grow. You have to get bad in order to get good.” Trust the gut and the process and sometimes that process means to wipe the slate clean literally and figuratively. Easier said than done, but this morning it felt like the right move.

Been a busy end of summer wrapping up a bunch of commissions. I’ll post some of them this week now that I’m coming up for some air! “Georgia’s Meadow” oil on canvas, feels like a window into Breckenridge at 60 x 36 and feels at home here in their mountain retreat. Thanks friends for the opportunity to bring this to life!

Thanks as always @glasswood.inc / Josh for the beautiful frame work! 👏✌️

Keep it simple, Norm. Gonna let this one be for a bit. Don’t want to overwork it. by @normshearer

Detail shots for this one. Malouinière de la Ville Bague. 30x24 oil on canvas. I could paint here for a year and barely make a dent in covering all the amazing gardens and structures. I love painting thick impasto marks and bold colors that are there but maybe not as literal or obvious as what a camera would capture. This is my first piece for my Europe series from travels this summer. Thanks @backroadstravel for the chance to capture so much of Brittany and Normandy (literally off the beaten path.) And thanks to all my new friends from that trip! Love “stealing” new friends. This was day one on our 6 day bike tour. I’ll have Fall show dates coming soon. Follow me on my website to stay in the loop on dates and info. Merci!
