NEW: Thandii x Regalado ‘ᴄᴏᴄᴏ ᴏᴋᴀʏᴏ’, where British alt-soul meets Filipino musical royalty. For Margate-based act @thandii.world , a whirlwind trip to Manila allowed Graham Godfrey and Jess Berry to explore a new cultural context of songwriting. Channeling Graham’s Filipino heritage, they collaborated with the diaspora as well as the Philippines’ most recorded drummer, Jun Regalado.Regalado has recently gained more recognition since the reissue of ‘Pinoy Funk’ on the Soundway compilation Ayo Ke Disco. Here he contributes his classic 70s Manila Sound style, with Thandii pouring in soul, disco-funk and trip-hop - resulting in an album refusing to be categorised as any one thing, and yet cohesive in its sound.Title track ‘ᴄᴏᴄᴏ ᴏᴋᴀʏᴏ’ is out now - pre-order the album coming 11 September on vinyl or digital. Visit Thandii Bandcamp or link in bio.Mastered and cut by @thecarverystudio Artwork and design by @riccardo_corda..#thandii #philippines #neosoul #neosoulmusic #filipino by @norsicaa

My @180.studios talk on South-East Asian music is now up on YouTube @thevinylfactory ! What a pleasure it was. The impromptu rave in the second half was unfortunately not captured in this video 😂This was my introduction to the region and its vast array of musical styles and influences, as well as the history - I did go down a few rabbit holes but it was just so fascinating to me. Hopefully you find that too. I’ve finally battled the self-cringe and re-posted this clip. Big big thanks to @alexflowers___ and team for inviting me and giving SE Asia some representation 💕Link in bio to watch. by @norsicaa

Music can run through generations of families - and in Asia it’s no exception. From Shankar to Villar, we explore some of the most influential clans of the 20th century. There are many ways music can be a type of inheritance, whether through familial or societal channels. It could be in the form of instrumental skills passed from a master to a student, or a mother singing a lullaby to a child, or an immigrant relative nostalgically playing the music of their homeland on a special occasion.Spiritual and cultural beliefs - such as filial piety in East Asia and kapwa in the Philippines - further reinforce a sense of interdependence and social consciousness. For many families, music is the glue that binds them...#asian #asianmusic #ravishankar #musichistory #musicians by @norsicaa

When people talk about “third spaces” this is what I think of. We had all ages from all backgrounds mixing and sharing stories - from Chinese to Vietnamese, Laotian, Cambodian, Malaysian, Indonesian, Hokkien, Macanese and more (I didn’t get to talk to everyone!).The @eseacommunitycentre in Dalston is such a special place and I was so happy to be able to hold an event there last Friday with @rochellehkwan from @chinatownrecordsproject over from NYC and @phambinho from @anvietarchives . A particular highlight was having the elders sift through the records and talk about music together. Huge thanks to ESEA Community centre for letting us use the space, @metaasianbaby for the support, and @luckycatzoe . by @norsicaa

Soundtrack to your summer heat: 5 jazz fusion records that got tropical in South-East Asia. The fusion genre linked the music between many of the Asian island cultures - and was most prevalent in the Malay archipelago up to Japan. From jazz to calypso and bossa nova, Asian musicians channelled a range of Latin and African American genres. They blended them with Asia Pacific sounds - including traditional instruments and melodies, local styles such as Malay keroncong, as well as Polynesian influences like the Hawaiian steel guitar and slack-key. This gave the region’s jazz fusion a distinctly ‘tropical’ flavour. What’s your favourite Asian jazz fusion record?Note: Rien Djamain is the correct spelling of her name - unfortunately the original album art has her first name incorrect!..#jazz #jazzfusion #tropicalmusic #vinyl #vinylrecords by @norsicaa

In the Filipino soundscape, the Jeepney is a familiar presence. It’s a concentrated microcosm of life in the Philippines — from modified car horns with vintage movie sound effects, to souped-up audio speakers blasting music, densely packed travellers and the roar of a diesel engine. A vehicle for social cohesion, sharing music and maintaining accessibility. Characterised by bold, bright colours on a chrome canvas, they’re instantly recognisable in a sea of traffic. Some boast incredibly powerful DIY speakers - almost like a Colombian picó sound system on wheels. What have you heard in a Jeepney?...#jeepney #philippines #filipino #filipinomusic by @norsicaa

Boy Katindig’s 1980 Filipino boogie-fusion outing, back on Norsicaa’s new Sama Sama label. Latin jazz pianist drawing from Paulinho da Costa and the US R&B charts. Batucada rhythms and a smooth disposition throughout.Includes an Isaac Hayes slow burner originally penned for Dionne Warwick and a Greg Phillanganes cut from the same period. by @norsicaa
