🧺 A little bit of North Devon history… the Pannier Markets

Pannier markets have been part of Devon life for centuries. The name comes from the panniers – large baskets once used to carry farm produce into town to sell.

Markets were once at the heart of everyday life, with farmers and their families bringing in eggs, butter, cream, vegetables, fruit and other local produce.

Thankfully, this tradition is still very much alive in North Devon today. You can still wander around the historic Barnstaple, Bideford and South Molton Pannier Markets, discovering local produce, independent traders, crafts and plenty of character.

Barnstaple’s market dates back to the town’s long history as a market centre, with the current market building opening in 1855. Bideford’s market tradition stretches back even further, while South Molton’s beautiful covered market was built in 1863.

Our farms aren’t just home to our farm animals - they’re also a haven for some wonderful wildlife. 🦌
