2023 filming the herring run at Black Creek for The Keeper. The herring only run upstream for a few weeks in the spring, and even then only for a few hours at dawn and dusk. We were fortunate to have the @nysdec fish weir in place, which created an area for them to crowd up and be easier to capture on film - but even then it took us 2-3 visits to get our shot.

We used a @blackmagicdesignofficial Pocket 4K in a waterproof housing on the end of a monopod and monitored it remotely. No AF so we opened up and pinned our focus to about 1ft and let the fish come to us. An @aputure.lighting 300d with fresnel on a well secured stand in the water gave us some really nice volumetric backlighting which looked quite sunny and natural from under the waves. Definitely one of the cooler shots in the film!

Behind the scenes on “The Keeper” for our interview with @chris.bowser.965 about Glass Eels. This EXT setup put the dappled sunlight behind our subject, tempered by a 1/4 grid 4x4 that cut just enough to keep a nice rim on the fill side. We had to get the 300d in extremely close at max power to balance the exposure (we now have a 1200x 💪) there’s also an RGB tube just off to the left that helped wrap some of the light but in hindsight it probably wasn’t doing too much!

BTS photos of our lighting setup for John Lipscomb on “The Keeper.” We did all of our interviews to-camera using a @glidegear face-to-face interrotron. You’ll notice we had to setup a small softbox @fiilexled support light for @jonbowermaster so that John Lipscomb could see Jons reflected face in an otherwise dark room - worked out that the @aputure.lighting dome 150 was large enough to flag any spill off of our subject.
