We’ve come up with five very good reasons to come to our next book club on October 12th at @barevelyn__.

Your surf crush is there. He waves you over to his table, where his very Mullum-esque friend group are deep in conversation about whether the latest natty wine at Mullumbimby Continental is actually good.

Oh my god, is that my neighbour’s dog?

Steve!

You crouch down for a quick pat.

Someone brings out a chess board.

Guess you’re staying for a game.

Wait, have I been here for two hours?

Not at your desk.

Not on your couch.

Somewhere in between.

October’s book club pick is 'Fruit Fly' by Josh Silver and, from what we’ve gathered, it’s going to be a deliciously uncomfortable one.

Seven years after becoming a literary sensation, Mallory is desperate to revive her career. Then she meets Leo, a young struggling addict surviving on the streets and trading sex for survival. He’s vulnerable, enigmatic and, to Mallory, the perfect story.

As she becomes increasingly determined to turn Leo’s life into her next bestseller, Fruit Fly starts asking some very uncomfortable questions about who gets to tell whose story, what makes a life worthy of literature and how far you’d go for the perfect book.

Basically, car-crash literature. You know you shouldn’t look. You’re going to look.

Thank you to everyone who came along, brought your thoughts, your hot takes and your very good taste in books. We had the loveliest night talking all things 'Sophie, Standing There'.

Phones, Zoe thinks, have “pigeonholed our desire”.

It’s an interesting idea at a time when so much of our desire is mediated by an algorithm. We are constantly being shown more of what we already ‘like’.

“Your desire is challenged” in communal spaces, they said.

And art can do the same thing. Such as a book called 'Eros'.
