🎞️ Nouf Aljowaysir 🎞️

PG Studios’s fourth online exhibition is now live on the Palmer Gallery website (link in bio), exhibiting work by @nouf.py.

🎞️

Nouf is a self-taught new media artist who explores our ever-changing relationship with artificial intelligence systems and algorithms. She challenges AI tools with intimate questions about inclusivity and biases: whom do they benefit, and whom do they ignore? Nouf’s Ancestral Seeds series continues her exploration of identity and genealogy through the lens of AI and colonial archives. The project is grounded in the Salaf dataset - a photographic archive of 6,000 colonial-era images from the 1800s to early 1900s, altered using AI to erase the original subjects. These photographs, filtered through a Western colonial gaze, often depict staged and exoticized scenes that perpetuate reductive stereotypes. By processing these images through computer vision models, Nouf exposes systemic biases embedded in AI - such as the misidentification of veiled women and the mislabeling of Bedouin figures with militaristic terms. These failures highlight broader issues related to prejudiced AI models, data collection, representation, and the selective preservation or exclusion of histories.

My film Where am I from? (Ana Min Wein?) is officially presented by @nytimes op-docs. Op-Docs is the New York Times’ award-winning series of short documentaries by independent filmmakers.

I am truly speechless and honored for my film to be a part of the Op-Docs family 🤍 Making this project has meant so much to me: for my practice as an artist, for the memories and struggle I’ve always felt immigrating to a new country, for processing who I am today and seeing the beauty of my ancestry instead of the reduction of it to war, politics, and pain. This film is not just about AI. It reflects our society’s tendency to put each other in boxes and labels and reduce cultures to a degree that they don’t even exist anymore. My work celebrates oral storytelling and the poeticism of being human and alive. I wonder if AI can truly capture that?

This question will continue growing and shifting as I grow older and live in more places, and I’m excited to continue making art, talking about it with AI, and seeing how it evolves with me.

Thank you to so many of those who have left and sent messages of support and resonance.

Thank you to everyone involved. Full credit list is on my film :) couldn’t have done this without @somersethousestudios @hopeart.ist @artofsarraa 🖤

Entrada livre.

Through colonial histories, archives and personal experiences, the works reveal erased memories, biased representations, and different ways of imagining the past. Together, they offer a critical perspective on who is represented, who is excluded, and who controls visual narratives.

🎞️ NOW SCREENING AT GOWEN LAB

Nouf Aljowaysir
Ana Min Wein? (Where Am I From?)

Presented as part of Nouf Aljowaysir‘s First Solo Show at the Gallery, Ana Min Wein? (Where Am I From?) expands the artist’s exploration of memory, identity, and the ways artificial intelligence and algorithmic systems shape our understanding of ourselves and our histories.

Constructed as a visual diary, the film brings together personal archives, oral storytelling, and an AI narrator to examine how technologies not only inherit but also reproduce cultural biases, while exposing the reduction of culture and the eradication of collective memory.

Winner of the 2023 Lumen Prize for Moving Image, the film has been screened internationally at IDFA, CPH:DOX, Centre Pompidou, New Museum, M+ Museum, and Somerset House, and was released as part of The New York Times Op-Docs series in June 2024.

Nouf Aljowaysir, Ceremonial Ancestors

2026, Permastone sculpture with laser etching + generative video

A video and sculpture in dialogue, exploring the biases encoded in artificial intelligence and in the archives that train it.

Ceremonial Ancestors extends Aljowaysir’s research on AI, identity, and bias through the Ross Archive of African Images at Yale, a collection composed almost entirely of European-made photographs. Many of these images document objects extracted from communities under colonial conditions, then reclassified as “art”—stripped of their ritual, social, and spiritual contexts, and flattened into a Western-legible idea of African culture. Today, AI systems train on archives like this one, inheriting and reanimating the same distortions.

Aljowaysir responds through erasure. Using AI segmentation, she removes parts of the archival photographs, creating gaps in the data and disrupting the cycle of misrepresentation. These altered images became the training material for the model that generated the video: a latent space walk through multiple generated outputs from the model. Yet the work shows that even through erasure, AI continues to learn and reproduce colonial patterns, turning bias into an almost unrecognizable abstraction.

Nouf Aljowaysir is a visual artist whose practice critically examines the role of algorithmic intelligence in shaping personal and collective constructions of selfhood and historical knowledge. Working across photography and moving image, she creates narratives that move between archival materials, memory and particularly non-Western histories.

Her work has been exhibited internationally at Jeude Paume, Photo Élysée, M+ Museum, Rhizome, and KADIST, among others, and featured in Le Monde, BBC Culture, and The New York Times. She is a recipient of the 2023 Lumen Prize for Moving Image.

Last week to see my series Salaf (Ancestors) as part of Imaging after Photography at the Moody Center for the Arts, Rice University @themoodyarts

Curated by Alison Weaver @alisonweaver00 and Noor Alé @noor.means.light, Imaging after Photography explores how AI is reshaping photography, blurring the line between images captured from the world and images generated by machines. Through the work of global contemporary artists, the exhibition asks what feels real, what is fabricated, and how new technologies change the way we see ourselves, history, and the world around us.

Salaf sits within this conversation by exploring the unstable space between photography, memory, absence, ancestry, and machine-generated images.

The exhibition has also received critical coverage from Hyperallergic, e-flux, Forbes, British Journal of Photography, Blind Magazine, The Brooklyn Rail, and more.

Lehnert & Landrock: Relecture d’une archive coloniale

Lehnert & Landrock’s photographs shaped orientalist fantasies of the Middle East for European markets. Their images circulated widely, flattening identities and turning the region into a single, homogenous “exotic” vision made to sell. Titles shifted, features were altered, and subjects were left unnamed. What mattered was a romanticized view of the Orient.

This exhibition traces their role and the circulation of these images. While they may appear historical, they continue to haunt the present. These colonial archives are still sold today and became the only visual records I could find when searching online for my own lineage.

In Salaf (Ancestors), I use AI segmentation to erase these racist depictions, generating an absent dataset. I then retrain a model on this absence to show how easily AI can reanimate archives and reproduce the same colonial patterns today.

Exhibition documentation at Photo Élysée.

C’est la dernière semaine pour voir l’exposition — show ends Feb 1.

Merci à milieu pour l’invitation ♥️♥️♥️
