“Dear Data,”operates in the space between aggrandized promises of disruption and salvation and the routine experience of being processed, analyzed, and consumed.

Artists examine how databases can preserve lost and overlooked histories while also reckoning with generative software that fills gaps in our recollection with fabricated memories—making false generalizations and amplifying harmful biases.

Exhibiting Artists: Nouf Aljowaysir, Alice Bucknell, Sarah Friend, Claudia Hart, Heesoo Kwon, Maya Man, Amor Muñoz, NOCELLCOVERAGE, Analia Saban, Tianyi Sun, Vickie Vainionpää, Amelia Winger-Bearskin and Anna Zhang

“Dear Data,” is co-curated by myself and ICA Director Iris Williamson. On view through December 13, 2026.

Drawing on Edward Said’s Orientalism, Nouf Aljowaysir’s Salaf and Colonial Index examine how dominant visual regimes have shaped the representation of Arabia and the wider Middle East. European colonial imagery classified and exoticized the region, while later American representations increasingly reframed it through the languages of oil, threat, terrorism, and war.

The works in Salaf and Colonial Index are paired through related poses,
compositions, and visual structures. Erasure makes these visual parallels more apparent, drawing attention to recurring patterns across both bodies of work and how partial representations shape how the region is seen and understood.

“Hidden Layers: AI Infrastructure and Hallucinations” Artwork Feature -

Nouf Aljowaysir
“Machine Vision Research in Archival Images”
2026
Object detection technique applied to archival images
Archival images from: Newcastle University Gertrude Bell Archive

Machine Vision Research in Archival Images (2026) by Nouf Aljowaysir examines how technologies of seeing can reproduce existing biases.
Using archival photographs taken by British colonial officer Gertrude Bell alongside contemporary Google image searches for “Iraq,” Aljowaysir explores how colonial representations of the Middle East intersect with today’s visual language of war and conflict.
When Bell’s photographs were processed through computer vision systems, they were repeatedly classified using terms associated with warfare—revealing how historical and contemporary biases can become embedded in computational ways of seeing, collapsing colonial history and the contemporary present into a reductive imaginary of the region. Images produced within one historical regime of representation were thus classified through another. This double exposure of past and present technologies of documentation reveals how the colonial archive is reframed through the militarized visual language that has shaped representations of the Middle East during and after the “War on Terror.”

𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘋𝘢𝘵𝘢,

On View: October 2 – December 13, 2026
Opening Reception: October 2, 5:00 – 8:00pm

The distinction between data consumption and production is narrowing. Today, commonplace activities like voting, ordering takeout, boarding a flight, or solving a CAPTCHA now entail being captured and folded into algorithmic systems, built by corporations whose priorities carry no obligation to the social values of the people routed through them.

Artificial Intelligence may well be the defining technology of our lifetimes. As a breakthrough, it is less like the internet (which it is often compared to) and perhaps more like electricity. It is already wired into so many surrounding systems that move power: energy grids, healthcare, transit, law enforcement, customer service, cartography, and so on. AI might best be understood as an accumulation of digital dependencies decades in the making, arriving now as infrastructure. And while nearly every technology of record—from the knotted cord, to the woven cloth, to the photographic negative—has shaped how memory and history are retained, generative systems infer rather than retrieve. What is offered as recall is closer to a forecast.

𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘋𝘢𝘵𝘢, operates in the space between aggrandized promises of disruption and salvation and the routine experience of being processed, analyzed, and consumed. Artists examine how databases can preserve lost and overlooked histories while also reckoning with generative software that fills gaps in our recollection with fabricated memories—making false generalizations and amplifying harmful biases.

Earlier this summer at @caamedia, director AX Mina joined @atuyliyev @nouf.py in a conversation moderated by @zbarzi to talk about AI in documentary: “It’s hard to not get swept up in the frenzy of AI, but all the noise can obscure what these tools actually do and what’s at stake when we use them. This panel aims to offer clarity for filmmakers who are curious but cautious about what’s on the horizon.“ (And nope, while we support thoughtful uses of new technologies in documentary, we have no plans to use gen AI in RUBBISH)

Науф Альджовайсир : Where Am I From?

The exhibition brings together four artists, Alwin Maigler, Nouf Aljowaysir, Osheen Harruthoonyan and Tashiya de Mel, who question how photography has shaped and perpetuated ideas of identity, territory and belonging.

Through colonial histories, archives and personal experiences, the works reveal erased memories, biased representations, and different ways of imagining the past. Together, they offer a critical perspective on who is represented, who is excluded, and who controls visual narratives.

Free admission.

What a machine can imagine depends on what it has been taught to remember.
This selection brings together three works that intervene in the construction of computational memory: what is withheld from training, what is transformed through it, and what can be reclaimed by building new forms of inheritance.
