NOVA IMS is the first institution in Portugal to receive the ACEEU Entrepreneurial University Accreditation.

The accreditation recognises an entrepreneurial model that runs across the School: from strategy and leadership to teaching, research, support structures, collaboration with organisations and the ability to turn knowledge into economic and societal value.

NOVA IMS met all 15 accreditation standards. In six, it was rated Excellent, meaning it exceeded the ACEEU standard.

The results are also visible beyond the assessment itself. Over the past five years, NOVA IMS students and alumni have founded 60 startups and one spin-off, while 2,500+ people have taken part in entrepreneurship programmes promoted by the School.

This accreditation recognises something that has been built over time by students, alumni, faculty, researchers, staff and partners.

🌱 Our first harvest is here!

Just a few weeks after planting, the urban garden at NOVA IMS has produced its first harvest: around 80 kg of fresh vegetables and herbs.

The occasion brought our community together to celebrate the first results of NOVA Bela Flor, a project supported by Lisbon City Council’s BIP/ZIP programme, connecting NOVA IMS with its neighbours in Campolide through urban agriculture, sustainability and shared activities.

The produce will be shared within the NOVA IMS community and with the Centro Social e Paroquial de Santo António de Campolide, helping bring fresh, locally grown food to the neighbourhood.

We were also pleased to welcome Maria Isabel Jonet, President of @bancoalimentar Contra a Fome, one of the project’s partners, for a visit to the garden and to see its first results.

Developed in partnership with @upfarming_org, the garden relies on the involvement of volunteers from our academic community, who help care for the plants and take part in the harvests.

And this is only the beginning. 🌿

IMS Ignite, NOVA IMS' Entrepreneurship Acceleration Program, provides entrepreneurs with specialised mentoring, individual support and practical tools to develop their businesses, validate their ideas and prepare to enter the market.

The programme is part of NOVA IMS' commitment to entrepreneurship, recently recognised through its international Entrepreneurial University Accreditation, the first awarded to an institution in Portugal.

25 years of partnership. And a shared vision for the future of GIS. 🌍

NOVA IMS was among the five institutions recognized by @esri_portugal for more than 25 years of collaboration during the Encontro de Utilizadores da Esri, held at the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon.

The award was received by Miguel de Castro Neto, Dean of NOVA IMS, and Marco Painho, Full Professor at NOVA IMS, who plays a key role in advancing education and research in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at the School.

Over the years, GIS has evolved, opening new possibilities for understanding our world, connecting data with geography, and making better-informed decisions.

This recognition marks an important milestone in a partnership that continues to connect academia and geospatial technology.

11 NOVA IMS researchers among the World’s Top 2% Scientists!

The 2026 @Stanford / @elsevierconnect ranking recognises 11 NOVA IMS researchers for their scientific citation impact in 2025.

Congratulations to Tiago Oliveira, Paulo Rita, Mauro Castelli, Carlos Tam, Leonardo Vanneschi, Fernando Bação, Cong Liu, Manuela Aparicio, Georgios Douzas, Paulo Vitor Campos Souza and Ruoyu Wang!
Their research spans Artificial Intelligence, Computational Mathematics, Industrial Automation, Geomatics and Urban Planning, alongside Information Systems, Marketing and Tourism.

This recognition reflects the breadth of scientific expertise at NOVA IMS and the international impact of its research across multiple disciplines, conducted through its research center, #MagIC – Information Management Research Center.

Three days of ideas, collaboration, real-world challenges and conversations about the future of urban mobility. 🚊🏙️

From 23–25 September at NOVA IMS in Lisbon, Mobility & Digital Twins: Enabling the Data-Driven City of Tomorrow brought together researchers, public authorities, mobility operators, technology experts and professionals to explore how data and Digital Twins can help us better understand, plan and manage our cities.

And it went far beyond the conference itself.

Over three days, the programme connected knowledge with real urban challenges through:

🔹 Hack the City: Mobility Challenge — a 48-hour hackathon where teams worked with real mobility challenges and data, supported by the organisations behind them;

🔹 Technical visits — taking participants into real mobility and urban operations to learn directly from the professionals working with these systems every day;

🔹 Working groups and knowledge exchange — bringing experts and stakeholders together to share experiences, challenges and opportunities;

🔹 Mobility & Digital Twins Conference — where these perspectives came together to discuss the future of more connected, sustainable and data-driven cities.

A huge thank you to our speakers, participants, mentors, jury members, challenge owners and teams and to @portodelisboa, @tml.mobilidade and Lisbon Municipal Civil Protection Service for welcoming our participants during the technical visits.

Three days of Hack the City in just a few minutes. 🎥⚡

Ideas, data, teamwork, endless discussions, very little sleep and a lot of determination to make something work.

During Hack the City: Mobility Challenge, our teams took on real urban mobility challenges, worked with real data and had the chance to connect directly with the organisations behind the problems.

From the first conversations with our Data Partners to the final pitches, they explored, tested, changed direction, built and improved their ideas, all within just a few intense days.

This video is a glimpse of what happened in between: the work, the people, the atmosphere and the voices of those who experienced Hack the City from the inside.

And there’s more to come. 👀 Over the next few days, we’ll take a closer look at each of our Top 3 teams and the projects they developed during Hack the City. Stay tuned!
