For years, I convinced myself I wasn’t the problem. I was just having a bad day, a bad week, a bad run. Tomorrow would be different.

But tomorrow kept looking exactly like yesterday.

On May 25th, 2015, I walked into my 13th inpatient treatment center, having lost just about everything.

What changed wasn’t my circumstances. It was my willingness to finally approach life with an open mind and an open heart.

And that willingness saved my life.

Broken ribs and a minor concussion … somehow that STILL wasn’t the worst part 😂

My last day wasn’t my worst day because of what was happening around me. It was my worst day because of what I finally understood.

The drugs stopped working.
The excuses stopped working.
The deflection stopped working.

And I was left with the one thing I had spent years avoiding:

Responsibility.

That realization hurt worse than anything happening on the outside, because once I knew my choices were helping create my outcomes, I also knew I had to be the one to change them.

That was one of the most painful truths I ever accepted. It was also the beginning of my life changing.

I wasn’t the star. I was just a skate rat grateful to be along for the ride.

But after burning every bridge and living in survival mode for so long, being part of something gave me what I didn’t realize I was missing.

Real friendships. Community. Connection. Purpose.

Sometimes you don’t realize how badly you needed to belong until you finally do.

For a long time, being the fucked-up guy who would do anything was my identity.

People saw the chaos, the drugs, the insanity — and from the outside, it looked entertaining.

What they didn’t see was how lost I really was.

Today, I’m just grateful I survived long enough to become someone I never thought I could be.

How I see something affects how I feel about it. How I feel about it affects what I do next. It all connects.

Sobriety has given me enough clarity to recognize that not every painful season is happening to me.

Some of it is happening for me.

Because when I look back at every major change I’ve made in my life, pain was usually somewhere in the beginning of it. The darkest places forced me to look differently, surrender differently, and eventually move differently.

The feeling might fucking suck.

But once I stop running from it, accept it, process it, and change my perspective on it… that’s when I can get out of the problem and into the solution.

I feel a responsibility to be a piece of proof that recovery is possible.

When I got sober, I followed the footsteps of people who had what I wanted. They showed me that if I was willing to do what they did, I could get what they got.

Today, I get to be that person for someone else.

The kid who once couldn’t be trusted to his own devices now gets to show others what long-term recovery can look like.

That’s a responsibility I’ll never take lightly.
