Day two of the conference: from commitment to measurable impact.
In the 12th century, in Palermo, Arabs, Normans and Byzantines governed and built the city together. Today, the cities in the ICCAR network are asking themselves how to transform inclusion from a principle into a tangible outcome.
Ankur Sakaria (Pittsburgh), one of the authors of the U.S. Coalition of Cities’ Action Plan, opened the third panel: believing in a commitment does not mean achieving it. Cities need shared indicators and disaggregated data to measure outcomes, not just to report on activities.
With Karen Principe (Edmonton), Gyonggu Shin (Gwangju) and Carla Kupe (Chicago), the discussion centred on how to use data honestly and make it publicly available.
In the fourth panel, on urban planning and coexistence, Richard Sánchez (Barcelona) and Bartłomiej Ciążyński (Wrocław) discussed access to opportunities and rights: reducing inequalities, not just regenerating neighbourhoods. This is a theme that can be seen in Palermo’s monuments, where architecture was already a policy of inclusion.
In the afternoon, between the Martorana, San Cataldo and the Cathedral, we walked through the Arab-Norman city, where the monuments still tell the story of a city built together.
From Palermo, a collective voice heading towards The Hague.

Fabrizio Ferrandelli, Councillor for Youth Policies and Relations with Migrant Communities of the City of Palermo, opened the first day of working sessions, moderated by Manuela Marsano. He was followed by institutional greetings from Linda Tinio, ICCAR Secretariat, Social and Human Sciences Sector, UNESCO.
The first panel, on inclusion and democracy under pressure, was introduced by Danijel Cubelic (Heidelberg), with Eckhard Graf, Mayor of Ratzeburg, and Michael Schadek (Columbus). Inclusion today also means rebuilding the trust of those who have lost it. No city can do this alone: it takes networks and coalitions, in large cities and small towns alike.
Scherto Gill opened the second panel by reminding us that we walk the same streets, but those streets carry memories that are not only ours. A city chooses what to remember and what becomes its heritage. With Ema Wilkins (Montevideo), Evans Gumbe (Ratzeburg) and Ari Heikkinen (Oulu), we discussed how to build narratives of the past that speak to new generations.
In both panels, ICCAR Alumni brought their perspectives and questions, engaging directly with city representatives.
In the afternoon we followed the UNESCO itinerary through the Royal Palace and San Giovanni degli Eremiti: the memory we had discussed in the morning, written in stone.

Who is a mentor? Who are they?
People with experience. Facilitators, catalysts of a process that changes the participants’ perspective in just seven days. The mentor accompanies, reassures and builds a dialogue that does not end with the Bootcamp, but begins there and stays.
Three of them explain it:
@malaczapa: Facilitator and body-oriented practitioner, founder of TUNE IN, with a background in physiotherapy and Basic Body Awareness Methodology.
@azeb_lt: Ethics consultant for companies and DEI&A consultant, working on inclusion, migration and organisational change across intercultural contexts.
@manumarsano: Nova Project board member and Head of the National Contact Point for the European programme Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values, with over 25 years shaping EU projects on equality and social innovation.

Why Sicily? Why have we chosen it for the past two years?
Because it has always been a land of encounter, where cultures met, mixed and stayed. At the centre of the Mediterranean, Sicily teaches how cultures can integrate, so that no one feels excluded.
The Bootcamp starts on the mainland, in the big city. Then it lives its heart in a small community, where it is easier to feel and recognise one another. A micro-community that experiments and lives together for a week.

“Building DiverCity from what we inherit.”

Before the 5th UNESCO ICCAR Youth Bootcamp, this was a theme. Now it has faces.

20 young people from around the world. 29 speakers. Two places that could not be more different: Palermo, a city built by centuries of encounters, and Ustica, an island shaped by the sea around it.

What we inherit is not only history. It is the willingness to meet someone whose story is different from ours, and to build something with them anyway.

This video holds a few minutes of those days: the work, the questions, the moments when a group of strangers started to become a community.

The Bootcamp is over, but the connection isn’t. What was built there travels home with each of them, and we keep walking alongside our alumni, edition after edition.

02/09 — Ustica

Today’s theme: the private sector. A morning session with Mariacristina Iacazio (CEO, Toyota Material Handling Italia), Azeb Lucà Trombetta (DEI&A consultant) and Elisa Pillitu (People & Culture Manager, SRC Rent Car). In the afternoon, a boat trip around the island, followed by a lecture from Romano Prodi, twice Prime Minister of Italy and former President of the European Commission, on the idea of a Mediterranean University. In the evening, a Quodlibet with Romano Prodi.

The private sector is not alien to the city. It is part of it, and it plays a role in inclusion, or in exclusion.
