Our latest exhibition, ‘Selling Shippam’s’, opens tomorrow! 🤩 The new display in our first-floor library space celebrates the advertising history of one of Chichester’s most iconic companies, following the success of our ‘Hurrah for Shippam’s’ exhibition, which closed earlier this year. Quirky print adverts and colourful packaging help tell the story of how the company built a recognisable brand and became a household name in post-war Britain. Interactive elements bring the brand to life, from scent boxes recreating the memorable smell that once wafted through Chichester to hands-on activities for children, including the chance to design their own advert inspired by Shippam’s distinctive style. We are delighted to announce that ChichestHER, a new exhibition celebrating the lives, achievements and legacies of women from Chichester District, opens at The Novium Museum on 17 October 2026. A psychoanalyst who fled Nazi Germany, a hockey captain who established the Women’s Sport Foundation (now Women in Sport) and a suffragist who spent time in Holloway Prison are just some of the fascinating women whose stories are being featured in the new headline exhibition which explores the impact women, past and present, have made on Chichester District. The exhibition will feature: 📖 Loans from museums, organisations and individuals to help tell the fascinating stories of the women featured 👧 Interactive activities for younger visitors and families that directly link with the stories on display including puzzles, trails, dressing up, a Ladybird book library and much more. 🖼️ Artwork created by local community groups who have worked with local artists 🎞️ Animations created in collaboration with Illustration and Design students from @chi_college The exhibition will be accompanied by a district wide community events programme, featuring talks, family activities, tactile tours and ‘Makers Mornings’ led by local women to share their skills, creativity and expertise. ChichestHER is the culmination of a two-year project made possible thanks to @heritagefunduk which awarded the project a grant of £117,266. Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing glimpses from behind the scenes of the project and teasers from the exhibition, watch this space! Our new exhibition, ‘Made in Chichester District’, opens tomorrow! 👀 Making has always been part of Chichester District – from prehistoric flint tools created for survival to the large-scale modern manufacture of goods to sell both locally and nationally. This free exhibition celebrates the people, skills and industries that have helped shape the local area. It brings together objects and stories from the museum’s collection to explore how people across the district have made, crafted and manufactured goods throughout history. 🎟️ Find ‘Made in Chichester District’ in The Novium Museum’s first-floor foyer gallery from Saturday 13 June 2026. 🎉 ‘ChichestHER’ is now open at The Novium Museum! 🎉 We're delighted to welcome visitors to ‘ChichestHER’, a new exhibition celebrating the lives, achievements and legacies of women from across Chichester District. The exhibition features: 👩 The inspiring stories of 19 women, past and present, from Chichester District 📖 Objects, photos and video from national and local museums, organisations and individuals to help tell the fascinating stories of the women featured 👧 Interactive activities for younger visitors and families that directly link with the stories on display including interactive drawers, puzzles, trails, dressing up and much more. 🖼️ Artwork created by local community groups who have worked with local artists 🎞️ Animations created in collaboration with Illustration and Design students from Chichester College. Honoured to be in the company of so many fabulous women: many of them friends (and @mjvesq of course!) last night. ChichestHER has been a 2 year project in the making. It celebrates the lives, work & achievements of women across Chichester in the past & present. It examines the impact these women have had to local life & beyond in a wide range of fields including art, science, health & suffrage. 🎞️ We are delighted that students from @chi_college have produced five short animations for our upcoming ‘ChichestHER’ exhibition. Staff from The Novium Museum introduced second year Illustration and Design students to the remarkable women celebrated in ‘ChichestHER’ and asked them to develop animation ideas to tell these women’s stories with the support of Millstream Productions. We think the students have done a fantastic job at bringing the women’s stories to life, and we can’t wait for the animations to be seen when the exhibition opens this Saturday 17 October. Sarah Hughes, known as Fanny Cornforth, the pre-Raphaelite muse/model of Dante Rossetti had an interesting life and ended up in #Chichester in her later years. A sculpted head from the documentary sources (mainly Rossetti's drawings/sketches) of the day has gradually arisen just in time to accompany the forthcoming ChichestHER exhibition @noviummuseum - the terracotta will be in the front window until April 2027. Historian/author @kstonellwalker is talking on Fanny Cornforth's life in #chichester on 22nd October - contact the museum for details!
