Celebrating the women who shaped our community!

We were delighted that our CEO Avril Robinson was in attendance at the opening of ChichestHER: Celebrating the Lives and Legacies of Women in Chichester District, pictured alongside artist Kate Viner above.

Now open at The Novium Museum, ChichestHER celebrates the lives, achievements and legacies of remarkable local women, highlighting their contributions across areas including education, art, medicine, sport and the fight for women’s rights.

From pioneering campaigners to inspiring artists and community leaders, the exhibition brings into focus stories that deserve to be heard, recognised and celebrated. @katevinerart @noviummuseum

Visit the exhibition at The Novium Museum from 17 October 2026 to 17 April 2027

🏛 The Bosham Roman Head was likely once part of a colossal marble statue from Chichester Harbour. Previously thought to have been of Vespasian, a 2013 study suggested the huge fragment (0.42 x 0.5m) depicted the deified Trajan and may well have been erected by Hadrian (Russell & Manley 2015).

See it in The @noviummuseum!

A fabulous night at the opening of ChichestHER at the @noviummuseum in Chichester last night.

A celebration of some of the many women past and present who have made Chichester the most brilliant place to live, including Margaret Rule and Patricia Routledge. Our brilliant MP @jessbrownfullermp gave a barn-storming speech alongside District Council leader Clare Apel and the Novium’s Amanda Rogan. Hats off to Amanda, Rachel Ng, and the entire team who brought this exhibition to life.

Here are the five of us ‘living’ locals who are part of the exhibition - (left to right):

Dawn Gracie @dawngraciecabaretburlesque
Anita White CBE
Donna Ockenden @dockendenltd
Me!
Zoe Rahman @zoe.rahman

The glorious banner was created by local artists with the support of the inspirational @katevinerart

The exhibition is free to visit, and runs until March. Visit the website for opening hours and information about talks and events running alongside.

A final thank you all the individuals and organisations who are supporting this ground-breaking exhibition.

Review: ChichestHER @NoviumMuseum on now till April. Initial gathering celebratory with contemporary #women of the district; a poignant contrast to past lives remembered through perhaps fewer objects. Fitting that the Novium team are women, as makes an especially rich, considered experience to return to. A lot here on the upper floor to peruse; it redresses the recording of women’s history; another exhibition to mark societal re-balancing. Look out for forthcoming talks. #Chichester #southdownsnationalpark #Free/donations

ChichestHER opens today at @noviummuseum …

There is so much to celebrate and the museum are empowering all women with this amazing exhibition! History is a very male dominated narrative and it is so important to tell the stories of women past, present and FUTURE.

Admission is free so there is no excuse to miss this!

Travelled to my home town, Chichester, tonight to see the opening of an exhibition at @noviummuseum called ChichestHER, that “explores and celebrates the impact of 19 local women, dating from Tudor times to the modern day and shares their remarkable stories”.
It was completely overwhelming to have been chosen as one of the women and to see my life story displayed in a museum cabinet!!! To meet the other four women from the exhibition who are still alive and to read their stories was a true privilege.
The exhibition is on for another six months and there will be online resources for anyone interested in knowing more (including interviews and also stories of other women from the local area whose lives are equally fascinating).
Thankyou to everyone involved in making this exhibition happen - will share some more photos but for now, just wanted to share this moment - a surreal moment seeing my life displayed in a museum cabinet!!
I’ll be playing in Chichester on 27th Nov @chichesterft with my trio….looking forward to returning to the museum and spending more time reading the stories of all the other women in the exhibition.
Thanks so much to Amanda and Rachel and all the team for putting this together.

Sarah Hughes, known as Fanny Cornforth, the pre-Raphaelite muse/model of Dante Rossetti had an interesting life and ended up in #Chichester in her later years. A sculpted head from the documentary sources (mainly Rossetti's drawings/sketches) of the day has gradually arisen just in time to accompany the forthcoming ChichestHER exhibition @noviummuseum - the terracotta will be in the front window until April 2027. Historian/author @kstonellwalker is talking on Fanny Cornforth's life in #chichester on 22nd October - contact the museum for details! [Portrait Anne Purkiss, 2026 @southdownsportraits]

Before and After

A small Roman greyware bowl from the St Pancras Roman Cemetery, a first and second century CE cremation cemetery, which sat outside the walls of Chichester. This cemetery was used for everyday people and not those of high status, so ceramics of this type were utilitarian and commonplace. It is possible that this bowl was an object of utility in a home before its second life as a grave good.

The bowl was conserved at least once before I began working on it, as there was an excess of peeling cellulose nitrate glue on the break edges. After gently removing the old adhesive, each break edge was minimally consolidated in a controlled area to create a less friable surface for the new adhesive to bond to. The bowl was reassembled with Paraloid B72, and small fills of paraloid and glass bubbles were added to provide additional stability to the bonded bowl. These fills were then lightly colour matched to the rest of the bowl.

The last two images are maps of the location of the burial group from: Down, A. (1989) Chichester Excavations 1.

My books are found in strange places - bookshops, yes, but also a museum, an ancient farm and a converted railway station!
