Banana Ball at Rickwood Field in Birmingham turned a day of baseball into a tribute to history, progress ,and unity. Fans felt the spirit of togetherness in the place where the Birmingham Barons and the Birmingham Black Barons once played.

Why it resonated with fans and history lovers:

1. The game was played at historic Rickwood Field, the nation's oldest professional ballpark on the exact day, September 19th, when integrated baseball or any or other sport was made illegal in Birmingham . Civil Rights leaders once named Birmingham the most racially divided city in the country.

2. Banana Ball brought back a version of the Indianapolis Clowns, a storied Negro Leagues baseball team, who frequently visited Birmingham in the past, playing before segregated audiences.

3. Banana Ball’s joyful vibe connects communities through entertainment , baseball, and unity. 76 years later, Coach Crocco of the Loco Beach Coconuts remembers this significant my milestone.

From Birmingham to Baseball History ⚾💙

The Hairston legacy started right here in Birmingham, where Sam Hairston played for the Birmingham Black Barons before making his way to the majors. His journey didn’t stop there — he became a star with the Indianapolis Clowns, one of the most legendary teams in Negro Leagues history.

Three generations later, the Hairstons grew into one of the biggest MLB families ever, with five members reaching the majors. Their story is rooted in Birmingham’s rich baseball culture and shaped by the vibrant spirit of the Negro Leagues that propelled players toward MLB greatness.

Birmingham made them. The Clowns launched them. The big leagues remembered them. 🌟

Four teams. Two games. One afternoon at Wrigley Field—and these games counted.

On August 15, 1943, the Kansas City Monarchs, Cleveland Buckeyes, Birmingham Black Barons and Memphis Red Sox played a Negro League doubleheader on Chicago’s North Side.

Satchel Paige started the opener. Booker McDaniel earned the win. And the eventual pennant-winning Black Barons battled Memphis to a tie before darkness ended the second game.

All of this happened while AL/NL baseball was still segregated—and nearly four years before Jackie Robinson’s debut.

It’s a Wrigley Field story almost nobody knows.

Episode 377 of 90 Second ReCap. Every cap tells a story.

Had you ever heard about this doubleheader?
