Owned by the same increasingly impoverished family until 1991, the house remained essentially unchanged for nearly 400 years as the interiors and contents gradually succumbed to the ravages of time.

We're taking part in Heritage Open Days this Saturday 19 September, where you can discover Chastleton, a rare gem of a Jacobean country house, for free.

Built between 1607 and 1612 by the prosperous wool merchant, Walter Jones, it's remained unchanged for nearly 400 years, as its interiors and contents have gradually succumbed to the ravages of time.

Outside, you'll find a series of small and intimate garden spaces, including the Best Garden, lovingly restored over the past few years, and the Croquet Lawns, where the rules of the game were officially codified.

You can also find your next great read in the second-hand bookshop or pause for a spot of tea in the adjacent church.

Chastleton House is open from 1-5pm, with last entry at 4pm. Entry is free on Saturday 19 September, as part of Heritage Open Days. Normal admission applies at all other times and Chastleton is open Wednesdays-Sundays.

Hummingbird hawk-moths are having a moment. 🩷

Rosy, our senior gardener, spotted this one in front of the house the other day.

After migrating from southern Europe, they can be spotted in the UK from April to December, their wings moving so quickly that they often 'hums'.
