Meet the Presenting Scholar: Andy Moore 🤝

How will automation affect the dairy landscape, and where do we go from here? 🐄

Meet Andy Moore, Nuffield Farming Scholar sponsored by The Trehane Trust.

With a background in both engineering and farming, Andy has seen first-hand the challenges facing the agricultural industry, as well as the opportunities technology can bring.

His Nuffield study will explore how automation is transforming dairy farming, from robotic milking to AI-powered herd management, and how these technologies could help tackle some of the industry's biggest challenges, including labour shortages, animal welfare and climate change.

Andy will be presenting his findings at the 2026 Nuffield Farming Conference in Leeds, where he'll share his insights into what a more automated future could look like for dairy farming.

🍇Growing English Wine: Fred Langdale on Viticulture, Frost & Climate

In the latest episode of Tales of a Nuffield Scholar, we're heading to the vineyard with 2020 Nuffield Scholar Fred Langdale.

Fred has spent more than 18 years working in viticulture and his Nuffield research explored frost protection and cool-climate viticulture, a topic that's becoming increasingly relevant as UK vineyards experience earlier bud burst and changing weather patterns.

In this episode, Fred shares:

🍷 How English sparkling wine is produced
❄️ The challenges of protecting vines from frost
🌱 Why chalk soils are so well suited to English sparkling wine
🌍 What he learned from vineyards around the world
🔬 How his Nuffield research has influenced the way he manages his own vineyard
🍇 And why sometimes the answer to a farming challenge is more site-specific than you might expect.

It's a fascinating insight into a growing area of UK agriculture, and a pretty good excuse to learn a bit more about how that bottle of English fizz gets made. 🥂

Could your farm be producing more of its own energy?

For many farm businesses, energy production could offer more than an alternative income stream. Producing your own fuel, electricity or heat could help reduce costs, improve resilience and provide greater security of supply.

RASE and @nuffieldfarming have launched a new free-to-download guide exploring the opportunities for on-farm energy production.

The guide brings together practical insights and examples to help farmers consider what options could work for their business.

Interested in exploring your farm’s energy potential?

Download the guide via the reports page link in our bio and let us know what you think.

💪 A brilliant day for Team Nuffield at Britain’s Fittest Farmer!

A huge well done to our very own Charlotte Merson, Nuffield’s Programme Delivery Officer, who took home the title of Britain’s Fittest Farmer Under 40! 🏆

There was more success in the team event too, with Nuffield A taking the win and Nuffield Champions coming in third.

And a special shout-out to Tom, who managed the highest deadlift of the day, an impressive 190kg for three reps! 💪

Safe to say there were plenty of reasons to celebrate. Well done to everyone who took part and represented Nuffield, what a team effort! 👏

🐖 Can the next generation of pig farmers achieve another 50% increase in productivity, and should they?

Meet Gregor Bruce, a fourth-generation arable and pig farmer from the North East of Scotland and one of our 2026 Presenting Scholars.

After studying Physics at university and spending four years working as a Data Engineer in Edinburgh, Gregor returned to his farming roots, determined to build a sustainable and resilient business that can meet the challenges facing agriculture while improving productivity.

His Nuffield Scholarship explores whether the productivity gains seen in pig farming over recent decades can continue, and whether they should. Looking at animal welfare, sustainability, public perception and workforce morale, Gregor hopes to better understand the trade-offs involved and where the industry should focus its efforts next.

Gregor is sponsored by the John Oldacre Foundation.

🎤 Hear Gregor share his findings at the Nuffield Farming Conference, 18–20 November 2026 in Leeds.
