What can a Cornishman running a dairy farm in Chile teach us about building a stronger, more resilient farming business?

In the first episode of our special Farming Focus™ series, host and Nuffield Farming Scholar Peter Green speaks with Glynn Biles about why keeping things simple, investing in people and knowing when to step back can be more valuable than constantly striving for greater output.

Could doing less actually help your farm business achieve more?

🎧 Click the link in our bio to listen now and discover why building strong foundations is essential for adapting to change.

Another incredible day visiting amazing professionals @cornelluniversitycals and visiting a nearby multigenerational farm who were so passionate about their lovely cows and were kind enough to give up their time and chat to me about the importance of being a team and what it takes to earn a seat at their farm table. Truly thankful for this incredible opportunity @nuffieldfarming, @crediton_milling, @phileo and @nfumutualcharitabletrust and to our amazing family and friends support crew back home holding the fort to enable me to do this! 🥰🙏 xxxx #alwayslearning #appreciatetheinsights #lovenetworking #verylucky

Land. People. And capital.

These are three things Farming Focus™ host Peter Green’s grandfather said defined how we farm.

But after travelling across the world as part of his Nuffield Farming Scholarship, Peter wondered whether there might be a fourth.

In this special five-part series of Farming Focus™, we travel beyond the South West to hear how farmers around the world are responding to change. From overcoming familiar challenges to embracing new opportunities, discover the lessons and ideas that could help shape a more resilient future for farms closer to home.

Stay tuned for the first episode - out next Tuesday!

I am absolutely bursting with pride to share that Tristan has been selected as a 2027 Nuffield Farming Scholar! 🥹🚜❤️

For those who haven’t heard of a Nuffield Scholarship, it’s an incredible opportunity for people in agriculture to travel the world, learn from other farmers and industry experts, and bring that knowledge home to help shape the future of British farming.

Tristan’s research topic couldn’t be closer to our hearts:

“How can the family dairy farm model be adapted so it can survive and thrive for future generations?”

As fifth-generation dairy farmers, this is something we think about ALL the time!

Farming isn’t getting any easier, and finding ways to make family farms financially sustainable is exactly why we’ve diversified into milk deliveries, a farm café, weddings, glamping and so much more.

Over the next couple of years, Tristan will be travelling, researching and learning from farming businesses around the world. Hopefully bringing home ideas that we can put into practice on our own farm AND share with other family dairy farms across the UK. 🐄

❤️ It’s also particularly special that Tristan’s scholarship is being sponsored by the Three Counties Agricultural Society, our local agricultural society, which Tristan’s grandad was Chairman of for a number of years. There’s something rather lovely about that family connection coming full circle!

And on a personal level? I’m ridiculously excited about the adventures ahead! 🌍✈️ We’re hoping some of Tristan’s travels will also give us the opportunity to take our four children on some pretty amazing family adventures over the next couple of years!

I’m SO proud of you, Tristan. ❤️

🚜 COME ALONG FOR THE RIDE!

If you love British farming, family farms, farm diversification or simply fancy following a farming family on some exciting adventures, please give Bennetts Farms a follow!

We’ll be sharing Tristan’s Nuffield journey, what he learns and where it takes us!

Here’s to the next chapter for our family farm, and hopefully many others just like ours across Britain find a way forward 🌍🐄❤️

I’m delighted to announce that I was lucky enough to be awarded a Nuffield Scholarship! 😁 Huge thank you to @nuffieldfarming and my generous sponsors @theeastmallingtrust . My topic will be looking into farm-made composts, ferments, fertilisers (just to name a few) and how these are being scaled up for commercial systems 🪱 🍂. I can’t wait to see what adventures lie ahead, I will be treating this page as a travel diary so do follow along - any recommendations of people to visit and things to see are very welcome! 🌎 ✈️ 💚

Could your farm be producing more of its own energy?

For many farm businesses, energy production could offer more than an alternative income stream. Producing your own fuel, electricity or heat could help reduce costs, improve resilience and provide greater security of supply.

RASE and @nuffieldfarming have launched a new free-to-download guide exploring the opportunities for on-farm energy production.

The guide brings together practical insights and examples to help farmers consider what options could work for their business.

Interested in exploring your farm’s energy potential?

Download the guide via the reports page link in our bio and let us know what you think.

The variety of farms and businesses I visited was incredible and seeing how they aim to use every little section of land they have is one of the big learnings.
Anandmala Farm is able to host students in dorms and teach all about the traditional farming practices as well as open up the farm for visitors for various festivals throughout the year.

Day 2 - brief stop for lunch at @samah_wellnessandwellbeing_ Wonderful to see their fantastic farm stays amongst the peace of their mango trees and rice paddys 🥭🌾
Then off to meet Amrita at @hariyalikamshet . This 2 acre farm started just before Covid and focuses on growing herbs and plants that are particularly beneficial to the diet and health. Amrita opens up the farm for overnight stays as well as day visits and children’s summer camps.

My next stop was to meet Bruno at @parquerioformoso, the tourist destination he runs alongside the family farm, just outside Bonito.

Universal call to get the cattle over.

Pastures are a lot longer than what would “conventionally” be seen in the UK. The grass is predominantly brachiaria - a deep rooting (2-5m!) grass, native to Africa but has been used in Brazil since the 1800s. Very resilient to harsh climates, can store carbon in the soil through its extensive root systems.

The band of trees in the middle of the video is part of the 20% of natural habitat that has to be conserved on every farm. Different states have different rules but it is mandatory to some level across the country.

In addition to the preserved habitat, there are protection zones along rivers that must also be left with native vegetation to protect the water. The width of these riparian buffers is determined by the width of the rivers.

In the UK there are a LOT of people currently getting very upset that these mandatory buffers might be enforced in in the future. Here it’s just accepted.

Nelore cattle keeping their distance from the dirty foreigner (me). Moved regularly. Good length of vegetation. Scrub and trees dotted throughout the pasture. It’s not all intensive feed lots as some people might have you believe. (Had a very good discussion around land use change in Brazil but that’s for another post)

In addition to the beef cattle, Bruno also has a few dairy cows which produce milk for the family but also the restaurant at the park. A lot of it is used to make doce de leite - milk and sugar simmered for hours to produce the most incredible dark, sweet and creamy caramel paste that I’m sure you’re supposed to spread on something but I just ate with a spoon (also known in other countries as dulce de leche)

Bit of kit for making swales - ridges along the contours of a field that slow water down as it runs off the land allowing it to percolate into the soil. Flooding isn’t such an issue here (they understand that a floodplain is a floodplain) but when you’re trying to farm in a tropical climate, you want to be getting as much of that rainfall into your soil as possible to prepare for

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting Lucas Ferreira and his son who showed me around their stunning “eco park” Estrela do Formoso (or Star of the Formoso), in Bonito, MS, Brazil

He showed me the work he has done as part of the PSA/Payments for Ecological Services schemes to improve Native vegetation cover over and above what is mandated by law. PSA schemes run for two years and similar to our ELMS schemes, pay farmers to restore habitat for the frankly insane breadth and depth of wildlife they have in this country. I could tell from the way Lucas spoke about conservation how important it is to him. One of the differences though is that after that two year scheme, you don’t get paid for the same action again. In order to enrol in another scheme your application must include new proposals on how you are going to improve the environment.

Unfortunately not all farmers in the area are on the same track and bare ground on neighbouring land, as in the UK, turns rivers muddy following heavy rainfall….

This isn’t only a problem for the environment, but tourism too - which Estrela do Formoso relies on. This is their wonderful restaurant which sits at the heart of the 80ha reserve….

Waste from the site is sorted with all food waste being composted and recycling sorted leading the park to achieve a score of over 90% on the Zero Waste scheme.

Alongside the composting and recycling, a natural wetland filtration system cleans the waste water from the bathrooms and kitchen to a standard that can safely be discharged to ground. It processes over 1 million litres per year saving a fortune on waste water transportation as municipal sewage doesn’t service rural areas. During my visit, Lucas has a meeting with a wetland engineer to help increase the capacity further.

The banana trees in the wetland filtration system require a huge volume of water daily and also take up a lot of nutrients.

The main attraction for visitors is the river - the clarity of which is testament to how well most farmers care for the rivers and soil. This was following a hell of a thunderstorm the night before. Closer to home this water would be red with soil runoff. It was also full of life.
