The love I have for black literature
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
A woman’s vocation has always been to be a mother and a wife and Sula explores what happens when a woman decides to break free and find her freedom , the price one has to pay for their freedom especially when they are a black woman .

Motherhood is one of Toni Morrison’s prominent themes in her books. We see what happens when generational curses are not broken and we see how our parents choices affect our lives in different ways.

Nel and Sula bond over their shared pain, brought about by absentee parents who are barely present. We see how their friendship has evolved over the years.
Sula to me shows how we as a society judge people as evil because of the way they decide to live their lives. Sula suffers especially as a result of this vilification, while Nel is seen as the ‘good child’ because she decides to walk away from the life she is expected to lead.

Toni Morrison’s descriptions of the town of Medillion, the way the people live their lives, their history and their shared pain forms one of my favourite aspects of this book. The emotions are raw and heavy to me and that forms a core reason of why
I’m so drawn to this work.

I highly recommend this book as it has taught me many lessons especially that I need to break my generational curses

Reading to me has always been a way to escape reality and hide away, and at some point toward the beginning of this year I came to the conclusion that I didn’t I love myself enough to grow spiritually mentally and physically. Since then, reading has become harder for me. I’m working currently on ensuring that instead of seeing reading as a trauma response or defence mechanism, I try harder to see reading as away to cultivate my being, expand my knowledge and my inner conception of self. How do you guys relate to reading ?

I really enjoyed this book, the conversational writing style and the complex plot-line all contribute to a well rounded story which presents the highs and lows of Lagos life in a surreal and inciting way. Though the characterisation was thin, Amaka our protagonist was another high point of the story, as her grit and determination sees her moving through the murky underbelly of Lagos with ease. Guy also forms a fantastic narrative vessel, as his unfamiliarity with his surroundings helps us to become reacquainted with the familiar backroads of Adeleye’s Lagos from the outset.
Amaka our heroine is a very big positive, we as readers feeling more immersed in her story as the plot thickens, which further invests us in what happens to her over time. The people we meet along the journey of this story are the high points of the novel, even if their characterisation feels at time thin. Amaka is a brilliant protagonist, effortlessly navigating the murky underbelly of Lagos and Guy forms a fantastic narrative vessel.

Honest presentation of Lagos society which strips away the high walls and gated communities for a fresh look at life in Nigeria’s capital of decadence, how the upper class misuse the power they have been given.
Easy motion tourist is book I thoroughly enjoyed , this book satisfied my love for thriller novels and even though its been a year since I read the first book I will be reading the second one soon. by @nukiireads

For women’s month, I have compiled a book pile. Two phenomenal writers (Buchi Emecheta and Octavia E. Butler), and Two books on the future of women

Second Class citizen by Buchi Emecheta - A novel about Ada who moves to the Uk to gain independence from her abusive and misogynist husband.

Parable of the Sower By Octavia E. Butler - A thrilling dystopian set novel with a distinct, futuristic science-fiction aesthetic, Butler weaves a captivating tale of Drugs and Capitalism, exploring the effects of a world in which climate change has finally caught up to us

Unapologetic: A Black, Queer, and Feminist Mandate for Radical Movements- This book provided me with a vision for how social justice movements can become sharper and more effective through principled struggle, healing justice, and leadership development.

Male Daughters, Female Husbands: Gender and Sex in an African Society (Critique Influence Change)- Focus on the study of gender in An African society .

‘Two young people meet at a pub in South East London. Both are Black British, both won scholarships to private schools where they struggled to belong, both are now artists - he a photographer, she a dancer - trying to make their mark in a city that by turns celebrates and rejects them. Tentatively, tenderly, they fall in love. But two people who seem destined to be together can still be torn apart by fear and violence.

At once an achingly beautiful love story and a potent insight into race and masculinity, Open Water asks what it means to be a person in a world that sees you only as a Black body, to be vulnerable when you are only respected for strength, to find safety in love, only to lose it. With gorgeous, soulful intensity, Caleb Azumah Nelson has written the most essential British debut of recent years.’

For a short story, Nelson weaves a tale which leaves a profound impact, detailing the complexities of the lived experience of the Black Male in today’s UK, trying to find his feet in a city which constantly rejects him. The story is told in the second person which pulls the reader into the story allowing us to experience the story as our own. A dancer and a photographer finds love in London. As a Londoner myself I really enjoyed the way Caleb Azumah Nelson sets the London scenery , from the late night train rides to the crowded bars , which leaves me missing pre covid times.

As a debut novel Caleb Azumah Nelson writing style waxes lyrical in its pros. The use of second person pronouns ties the book together and engages the reader. I can’t wait to see more from him. Out now @vikingbooksuk @caleb_anelson by @nukiireads

The Mothers

In her debut novel, Brit Bennett details the life of three teenagers in a coming of age tale which explores themes of loss, consequence and the responsibilities which come with growth.

This book deals heavily with themes of loss, exploring the effects of a mothers suicide on its main character over time. Nadia Turner finds herself dealing with the aftermath of her mothers passing, while simultaneously undergoing an introduction to new life in the form of her budding tryst with Luke. Luke, on the other hand, is dealing with the effects of an injury on his body, as well as the mental struggle of his home situation and his clashes with his mother as she dives deeper into her faith.

I really enjoyed reading this book, it teaches the lesson that you can lose someone, but the effects of their presence and their actions shall always remain with us. The novel explores the idea of consequences very prominently, taking the actions perpetrated by its characters overt the course of its storyline and taking them to full execution, showing the full consequences of them. I particularly enjoyed Bennet’s style in this book, her frequent use of emotive language allows insight into the minds of characters at a very emotionally turbulent time in their human development, leaving a feeling of deep relatability to very universal experiences and motivations in all who pick up the book. by @nukiireads

So October has been a stressful month for me and that has reflected on my account with the lack of posts and the emphasis on EndSars and the bad governance in Nigeria

I know Endsars has not been trending as much lately but PLEASE it’s important to continue to repost the hashtags and post. It may not be as important to you but remember people have lost love ones and cannot afford to stop fighting for a better Nigeria.

Thank you everyone who came to the Reading protests. #endsars #endpolicebrutality #endbadgovernanceinnigeria by @nukiireads

Reading love stories can be infuriating The main character (usually a woman has to go through tremendous amount of suffering for someone who isn’t with it in my opinion

Love in colour is different. A compilation of 12 short stories , each of them as beautiful as the next. Bolu Babalola takes known and unknown legends and makes them her own . She makes love stories how they should be short and sweet.

Now not all of them end the way we want but they all end with hope, hope that the main characters will have their happily ever after

This has to be my favourite collection of short stories to date by @nukiireads

Read Toni Morrison- The other day I saw a tweet about the importance of fiction. We often think Fiction doesn’t provide us with as much knowledge as non-fiction as they are seen as easy reads. This is completely untrue. I believe that reading fiction improves our analytic skill. We also learn lessons due to the fact we have thought things through ourselves. When think about lessons I think about Toni Morrison. I learnt so much about my self from reading Love , so the first thing I did when I got to the Uk was order a bunch of Toni Morrison books.

Lagos Noir is a compilation of short stories by known and up-coming writers set in Lagos. I enjoyed this book. Most of the stories felt familiar to me probably because I know a friend who knows a friend that some of these stories has happened to. I would like to say that I didn’t think it was as dark as was intended as they seemed more like general fiction than Noirs

Out of all the short stories, a must-read are Heaven’s Gate, For Baby For Three and Joy by @nukiireads

The substantial growth on this page has made me so happy. I am not the one to put my voice out there so starting this account was a way for me to express my self and find my voice. I see my self pushing boundaries I didn’t think I would cross because of it.
Thought I would do a quick get to know me because why not ?

- my name is Shakira Atinuke. I go by shakira or Tinuke. If you call me nukii I mostly likely wouldn’t respond because whos that.
- I am a cancer sun and Scorpio moon . So you can imagine the level of emotions the people around me go through.
- I am a Nigerian woman. A Yoruba woman if you are wondering. I live in both Nigeria and the Uk. I school in the Uk .

Easy Motion Tourist and it’s sequel When Trouble Speaks. - A fast pace crime fiction set in Lagos and it’s underground crime scene .
