The upcoming edition of Typographic Nights — curated by @paulinatrzeciak.pl — turns its focus towards a new generation of graphic designers. It brings together three recent graduates whose practices offer distinct approaches to type design, publishing and image-making. 🔤 📠 ✂️ 🖋️

Working live and responding to texts submitted by the audience, Junghyeok Park, Malva Askerup and Nu Zając will each approach the same format through their own methods, tools and visual languages. 🧩 Their practices move between systematic and intuitive, digital and analogue, from type design and editorial structures to scanning, collage, stamping and physical interventions.

🗓 Friday 11 Sept, 18:00
💬 Live graphic design session
👥 Junghyeok Park, Malva Askerup and Nu Zając

While @nukiloom's practice approaches typography through the construction of typefaces and books, @malvaaskerup works across design and editing, exploring collective and feminist publishing practices through typography, image and material form. @jung_hyeok_ foregrounds hands-on processes, using tools such as stamps, paper and ink to explore repetition, transformation and the traces left behind through making.

By giving the floor to recent graduates, Typographic Nights offers a space to test ideas freely, while inviting the audience into the often unseen processes behind graphic design.

🔖🩵 Will we see you there?

Typographic Nights is co-founded by Trang Hà (@terrafic.soup), Paulina Trzeciak, and Page Not Found.

[3/3] A while before the work had to be complete (though not such a long while that I wouldn’t wish to have done it sooner), I shared my fonts with designers and began using it myself.
It was becoming more complete by the day and the final round of revisions came after any deadlines, as I was using it in my text documents for my own recreational writing. I suddenly became particularly picky about the spacing of quotes in a way I wasn’t while typesetting. Although it isn’t completely finished, it has landed in a place in which I am quite happy to use it for setting text.

Trice is a text typeface meant for book setting. One roman and two italics are drawn with subtle idiosyncrasies that make nice book covers and disappear in text sizes. It has two roles; to simplify convoluted typography, or to convolute simple typography. Which way it goes is a matter of proclivity.
premise.

Nu is a Polish-born type designer of unclear national affiliation, usually based in Luxembourg, The Hague, or Rzeszów. Their typographic and type-design practice explores formal type in literary contexts, aiming to be unobtrusive while reading but subtly atypical in both details and broader, compositional gestures. by @nukiloom

[2/3] The characterset of Trice is somewhat extensive, not in that it has many characters, but in that nearly all characters are drawn in all 6 sources. This is because I thought it important to solve design issues, especially of diacritics, in multiple styles that face their own problems. I sought to answer any comparative questions I would run into (such as ‘how should the weight of the superior figures grow relative to the lowercase?’) by executing on their premise.

[1/3] I would best describe Trice as ‘inevitable’. It’s an exploration of things that interest me and that I wanted to do for a long time built on a basis of what I typically do; text faces. It’s my first typeface in years that uses straight lines in its design, it explores italic archetypes I am interested in, and it’s a sufficiently atypical font family structure to have ensured that I would run into engineering problems. It’s a good challenge within familiar waters.

Diagonal points undiagonal’d live.

Lately I have been drawing some italic shapes. This script I call ‘orthogonator’ was something I cooked up while dealing with all the diagonal points.

In particular the inner counter of the ‹o› can pretty much sit at any rotation in an italic. I wanted a way of previewing how a shape might look if it was redrawn ‘properly’ with respect to its horizontal and vertical extremes while it’s being rotated or otherwise modified.

One spaghetti code later, it technically doesn’t not work. by @nukiloom

KABK LetterStudio research+design project under supervision of Frank E. Blokland

The typeface is a result of roughly a semester’s worth of research and learning, with a slow start and a late sprint. The book I designed and made in a day.
