जब मुख्यधारा का मीडिया गड्ढे में गिरे प्रिंस और चोटी कटने की कहानियों में व्यस्त हो जाता है, तब उत्तर प्रदेश के किसी सुदूर गाँव की दलित बस्ती में बंद पड़े हैंडपंप की खबर को जगह नहीं मिलती।

पर उस बस्ती के लिए वह हैंडपंप कितना ज़रूरी है, यह कौन बताएगा?

खबर लहरिया की वरिष्ठ पत्रकार कविता बुंदेलखंडी ने यह बात कही और यह बात मेरे साथ रह गई।

4 अक्टूबर, शाम 4 बजे। नुक्कड़, राजेन्द्र नगर का सबरंग हॉल हर उम्र और वर्ग के लोगों से लगभग खचाखच भरा था। मौका था खबर लहरिया की महिला पत्रकारों के संघर्षों पर लिखी किताब 'बड़ी आई पत्रकार' पर बातचीत का। मीना, कविता, नाज़नी और उनकी साथियों को सुनते हुए तीन घंटे कैसे बीते, पता नहीं चला।

पत्रकारिता की किसी पारंपरिक शिक्षा के बिना, अपनी जगह बनाते हुए, लोगों की अपनी भाषा में उनकी खबरें सत्ता और समाज तक पहुँचाना। सवाल पूछना, विरोध झेलना और अगले दिन फिर अपना काम करने निकल पड़ना। उनकी बातों में इस सफ़र की मुश्किलें भी थीं और अपने काम पर भरोसा भी। सुनते हुए कभी हैरानी होती थी, कभी मन भारी होता था, और कई बार उनकी हिम्मत पर बस मुस्कुराने और तालियाँ बजाने का मन करता था।

Acumen Fellowship के दौरान एक बार अपने विशेषाधिकारों पर बात करते हुए यह सामने आया था कि अपने जैसे लोगों की कहानियाँ मुख्यधारा के मीडिया में देख पाना भी एक विशेषाधिकार है। कविता को सुनते हुए वही बात याद आई। जिन लोगों की परेशानियाँ हमारे सामने आती ही नहीं, उनकी परवाह करना हम सीखेंगे कैसे?
और बात सिर्फ़ इन खबरों के सामने आने की नहीं है। इन्हें सामने लाने वाली महिलाओं की भी है।

जब खबर लहरिया की संस्थापक सदस्य दिशा, जो खुद भी Acumen Fellow हैं, का पहली बार संदेश आया था, तब लगा था कि एक अच्छी मुलाकात होगी। वह हमारी सोच को इतनी मज़बूती देगी, यह नहीं सोचा था।

मुझे और मेरी पूरी टीम को यह शाम नई ऊर्जा दे गई। सवाल पूछने की हिम्मत, अपनी सच्चाई के लिए लड़ने का माद्दा और दूसरों की तकलीफ़ को ज़रूरी समझने की ज़िम्मेदारी, यह सब हम अपने साथ लेकर लौटे।

नुक्कड़ में ऐसी शामें मुझे याद दिलाती हैं कि हमने इस जगह को बातचीत और मुलाकातों का ज़रिया क्यों बनाना चाहा था। उस शाम सबरंग में बैठे हम सब एक-दूसरे की दुनिया के थोड़ा और करीब आए।

Who gets to tell the story of a place?

Perhaps the better question is: why should there be only one?

For Nirman Residency, we want to come closer to Bastar through people who experience its changes differently - those who live here, build here, question things, preserve things, leave, return, remember, and imagine what comes next.

Not to find the story of Bastar.

To listen to enough of them that a single story no longer feels sufficient.

There is a difference between travelling through a place and allowing a place to unsettle what we think we know.

Nirman Residency is being shaped around that difference.

We are not entering Bastar to explain it, romanticise it, or search for a convenient conclusion. We are creating time to listen - to people whose experiences may not agree with one another, but are all part of the region’s present.

The residency will ask participants to stay with complexity: to notice what is changing, understand what different people wish to protect, and examine the assumptions they themselves bring into the room.

The aim is not to return with one definitive story about Bastar.

It is to return more attentive, more responsible, and perhaps a little less certain than before.

We do not have one fixed answer.

You may work in development, public policy, education, ecology, livelihoods, media or community action. You may come from an entirely different field, carrying questions that do not fit neatly into any category.

What matters is how you arrive.

With the willingness to listen before forming conclusions. To meet people whose experiences and viewpoints may differ from your own. To question familiar narratives and your own assumptions along with them.

For five days, 20 residents will travel, learn and reflect together in South Bastar.
