In dreams begins responsibility. — W. B. Yeats, ‘Responsibilities’ 1914. A weekend to remember, in so much gratitude. 🙏🏼🍀 by @nupurdalmia
If Ahmedabad offered a window into the relationship between commerce, craft and cultural stewardship, our time in Vadodara brought us into a different story, one shaped by patronage, pedagogy, and artistic exchange. Our day in the city explored how a culture of art and education has, over generations, created space for artists, scholars, collectors and institutions to shape one another. From the preservation of artistic histories and archives to the communities of practitioners and educators who continue to build on them, we encountered a cultural ecosystem sustained by both inheritance and active engagement. What stayed with us was the sense of continuity, not as something fixed, but as something renewed through teaching, collecting, making, scholarship and conversation. Vadodara’s artistic legacy lives in what has been preserved and in the people and ideas continuing to give it new meaning. Swipe through highlights from our time in Vadodara. by @nupurdalmia

2024 in an allegory: ‘Andha Yug‘ (The Age of Blindness) is a seminal Hindi play by Dharamvir Bharati, written in 1954. It unfolds in the aftermath of the Mahabharat war and explores the moral, ethical, and existential dilemmas of its characters. A profound commentary on the human condition, the play delves into questions of personal accountability and the consequences of choices. Yet, in the shadows of despair, the play whispers of hope–of redemption through courage, conscientious leadership, and the enduring pursuit of higher ideals. Photographs from a sensational adaptation of the play by Arpita Dhagat, performed at the Rubamin, Halol factory. @arpitadhagat @arkfoundation_ None of it could be possible without @landscapeindia by @nupurdalmia
𝘏𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘛𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 : The Nilima Sheikh Archive. “The traditions of tempera painting I had learnt to love—Indian, Asian, and European, gave me clues to code my new concerns.” —Nilima Sheikh, 𝘈 𝘕𝘰𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘯 𝘗𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘐𝘐𝘐 How might the etymology of a word uncover various threads of an artist’s research, methods, and sensibilities? This exhibition uses “tempera” as a conceptual device to engage materials from the archive of artist Nilima Sheikh. The exhibition is segmented based on terms that share etymologies with, or are related to, tempera—temperature: to consider the mix of climates and geographies the artist encountered through her travels; tempus: to think through the complex temporal registers of materials in the artist’s studio; and tempering: in Sheikh’s collaborations with theatre practitioners and illustrations for children’s books. This exhibition is curated by Samira Bose for Asia Art Archive in India, in collaboration with the Ark Foundation for the Arts; with support from Pallavi Arora, Noopur Desai, Özge Ersoy, Arshad Hakim, and Sneha Ragavan. Presented at the Ark Foundation, Baroda. On view till 25 February, 2025 by @nupurdalmia

Pride and joy. Mani sir, as promised, I miss you with honesty 🌻🙏🏼🥹 K. G. Subramanyan (1924–2016), or Mani Sir as I knew him, observed the world with the curiosity and humility of a scientist. For him, ‘all the world [was] a stage’ indeed, and his artworks depict the world he inhabited with a theatrical flair, no less than The Bard himself. This is evident in paintings often overrun with narratives, color palettes that seem decidedly unfettered, and compositions divided into linear planes to resemble progressive or concurrent scenes, or perhaps a set behind the proscenium. The subject of his theatre, represents a shrewd pastiche of the human experience—the ceremony of tradition, the fantasy of myth, the sanctity of gods, the righteousness of a temple, and the truth of the grotesque. His triumph, however, lies in the levity with which he reflects all aspects of it: beauty and terror. Albeit often subversive, the overarching layer of humor makes his practice immediately accessible but likewise invites a multitude of conversations over time. @ennkishore @rachi_ta @dhaivat_14 by @nupurdalmia
