Myth #12
“Soy is bad for men because it contains estrogen”
.
📌 Soy is a high-quality source of protein, containing all of the essential amino acids plus vitamins and minerals, fiber (soluble and insoluble), omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, no cholesterol, and very little saturated fat compared with meat 👍🏻
📌 It’s also been touted for Its anti-inflammatory properties and for reducing the risk of coronary heart disease, osteoporosis, and some forms of cancer, and there’s clinical evidence to back up these assertions.👨🏻‍⚕️📝🔬
📌A 2010 review in Fertility and Sterility concluded that “neither isoflavone supplements nor isoflavone-rich soy affect total or free testosterone levels” and that there’s “essentially no evidence from nine identified clinical studies that isoflavone exposure affects circulating estrogen levels in men”.✅
📌Marji McCullough, ScD, RD, strategic director of nutritional epidemiology for the American Cancer Society, has said: “While isoflavones may act like estrogen, they also have antiestrogen properties.🤯
“That is, they can block the more potent natural estrogens from binding to the estrogen receptor. In addition, they stop the formation of estrogens in fat tissue and stimulate production of a protein that binds estrogen in the blood, making it less able to bind to the receptor.”

Myth #11
“A high fat/low carb diet will lead to fast body fat loss”
.
📌 Dr Julia Bone, sports nutritionist at the Sports Institute Northern Ireland, says this diet may well help reduce the number on the scales 📉 in just one week but not for the reasons you hope.
“If you are on the low carb, high fat diet for five days you will probably loose weight through the loss of water, glycogen and fibre, so essentially you’ve emptied your gut contents.”🤭
📌 Prof. Mike Gibney, Emeritus Professor of Food and Health at University College Dublin, says reducing calories consumed and increasing calories burned will always lead to weight loss, whether those calories consumed are through carbs or fat.🍞🥜
📌 A recent 12-month long study conducted by Christopher et al on 609 overweight adults found no difference between a low fat diet and a low carb diet on weight loss.📝 .

Myth #10
“A gluten-free diet is good for gut health”
.
📌Recent research has shown that going gluten free will provide no gut health benefits to those without an intolerance.😲
📌Not only will it not provide benefits but it may lead to worse gut health due to the removal of healthy foods.🤕
📌Dr Paoli Tosi, from the University of Reading, says gluten is often “unjustifiably given the role of the bad guy in our diet...yet many gluten containing foods are an important source of protein, fiber and micronutrients.” .

Myth #9
“Following a ketogenic diet will improve my performance”
.
📌The keto diet has been touted as a way to take advantage of the body’s large fat stores to fuel exercise 🏃🏻‍♀️
📌but Dr Mark Evans, postdoctoral researcher at University College Dublin, says it’s important to consider how intense your exercise is going to be.
📌He says: “when you do a high intensity workout, this is carb dependent so if you are reducing your carb stores then you are inhibiting the pathways in the body to allow you to burn carbs. So for sport that involves intermittent or repeated high intensity efforts, the keto diet is not currently recommended for exercise performance.”🙅🏻‍♂️
📌He adds that some studies testing the use of ketone supplements have been confused with studies on people following a keto diet. usually participants using ketone supplements are also consuming sufficient carbs to fuel their high intensity workout🥪🥪🥪

Myth #8
“Egg yolks are unhealthy cause calories and cholesterol”
.
📌Egg whites are considered protein-rich but the yolk actually contains about 16.4g of protein per 100g, compared to just 10.8g per 100g in the white 🤯
📌The yolk also offers a whole host of nutrients that the white does not, including: vitamin D ☀️, which most of us are deficient in during the winter, plus b-vitamins, good for energy and brain function 🤓, and essential fatty acids which are good for the brain and heart ♥️ .
📌Sure, the egg yolk in a large egg contains around 55 calories while the white contains around 20 but those are some nutrient loaded calories and they will keep you fuller for longer😊
📌ok, the yolk contains about 185mg of cholesterol BUT Heart UK, the cholesterol charity, says that eating eggs in moderation (maybe don’t have a egg omelette every day and watch the cholesterol in the rest of your diet) is safe because the cholesterol in eggs doesn’t have a significant effect on blood cholesterol. .

“Everyone should take a daily probiotic to keep their gut healthy”
.
📌Probiotics, prebiotics and the microbiome are an exciting area of research with new studies being done all the time to discover the many different ways we can boost our microbial diversity and what effects this has on our health🤓
📌But our microbiome (the community of microorganisms living within our bodies🔬) is most affected by our lifestyle and diet🥕
📌Dr Orla O’Sullivan, computational biologist at Teagasc Food Research Centre, says: “A healthy person with a balanced and diverse diet of whole foods should have no need for a probiotic.”🍳🌽🍌🥗🥖🧀
📌If you want to help your body re-cultivate good bacteria after an insult, such as a course of antibiotics, probiotics are a great resource to do this👌🏻
📌Certain probiotic microorganisms have been shown to help alleviate the symptoms of some illnesses and infections such as IBS and UTI’s👍🏻
📌But it’s worth remembering that everyone’s microbiome is different and will respond to probiotic intervention in different ways🤞🏻

Myth #6
“Protein powder will make me muscly”
.
📌Whey protein powder is simply a by-product of cheese production🧀
📌It doesn’t have to be taken as a supplement but simply as a convenient nutrient-rich food ingredient that can be consumed in varying amounts.
📌It’s not going to make you toned or muscly unless you also change your diet and work hard in the gym in order to do this🏋️‍♀️
📌It is not only for youngsters looking to sculpt their abs or build up their biceps💪🏻
📌Alongside strength training, it can help to maintain muscle mass during older age when we experience muscle deterioration.

“Energy gels will sustain me to run for miles.”
.
📌Prof John Brewer, of St Mary’s University, London, explains: “The average gel contains around 30 grams of carbs which translates to around 120 calories. That’s about the amount you use when you run one ☝🏻 mile.”

Myth #4
“Alkaline diets are good for our blood PH”
📌One of the many diets trending at the moment is the ‘alkaline diet’ which works on the assumption our blood PH can change according to whether we eat alkaline 🥒🥬🥑🥦 or acidic 🌭🍤🍪🥤🍗foods.
📌This diet involves cutting out highly processed food and drink and eating plenty of veg which is great BUT there’s no need to cut out certain grains,, nuts, meat, fish, and dairy products if it’s with the aim of influencing your blood PH 👎🏻
📌Our blood PH must remain between 7.35 and 7.45 and our body constantly regulates this itself in order to keep us alive 👍🏻
📌 Different parts of the human body are regulated at different pH levels to allow them to carry out their function.
📌Registered Nutritionist Dr Laura Wyness says: “If the food we ate effected our blood PH then we would be in a lot of trouble.”🤭

“Activated charcoal is good for filtering out undigested toxins in the body”
.
📌Dr Laura Wyness, a registered nutritionist, says: “Charcoal can bind nutrients and prevent the absorption of those into the body.
“In medicine it’s used to treat poison or drug overdoses but activated charcoal particles are too large to be absorbed into the bloodstream and it can actually reduce the absorption of some useful nutrients.”😱🤒

Myth #2
“BCAA’s are the best way to get your amino acids”
📌BCAA’s (Branch-Chained Amino Acids) are said to play an important role in rehydration, protein synthesis and the production of energy, therefore helping reduce soreness and fatigue after a workout🏋️‍♂️.
📌BUT some studies have shown these alone cannot support an increased rate of muscle protein synthesis💪
📌EAA supplements offer all 8/9 of the essential amino acids we need to get through our diet.

Myth #1
The ‘detox diet’
📌Your body is detoxing itself 24/7 via your liver and kidneys.
📌You can help it do it’s job by drinking plenty of water and going easy on the alcohol 🍷🍺
📌Eating plenty of fruit and veg is always advisable but there’s no need to go on a diet of pure smoothies and lemon water🍽🤐
📌The Uk’s National Health Service has advised when you starve your body of calories your body will start to build up chemicals called ketones. These chemicals can result in nausea, dehydration, weakness, light-headedness and irritability🤬
📌Plus a prolonged lack of protein can lead your body to break down its own muscle which can compromise your immune system🤒
