The quiet in the room when people really look—

Contemporary art asks something of you. Not understanding everything immediately, but being willing to sit with work that doesn’t resolve neatly. The pieces that pull you back, that won’t let go—those are the ones calling you.

Collecting means choosing to live with questions, ideas, and beauty that continue to reveal themselves. Not finished statements, but conversations that unfold over time.

Blanket I, 2022

Emergency blankets and nautical rope—materials meant for rescue and mooring, rewoven into something else. Visagie’s work surfaces what water remembers: submerged histories, childhood memories, the traces we leave when we refuse to stay hidden.

Between Waters / Entre Aguas now showing at Continuum, thanks to the generosity of Gene Johnson and Denise Prado.

Private viewings available—reach out.

Friends,

We can’t help ourselves. Even as we’ve fallen in love with San Miguel through real estate, our other passion won’t let us go—contemporary art and the conversations it opens up across borders and practices.

So we’re doing something we’ve been dreaming about: a small, considered exhibition called Between Waters / Entre Aguas with four artists whose work refuses easy answers. Farnaz Gholami, Rogier Houwen, Dale Lawrence, and Morné Visagie—practices rooted in displacement, reinvention, material honesty.

We’ve been lucky enough to meet Gene Johnson @gene.johnson.art , an artist and kindred spirit who shares our infinite curiosity about what contemporary art can do. Gene has generously offered his space, Continuum, for this pop-up. Much like the artists in this show understand flux and in-betweenness, Gene lives it—his practice and his space keep the conversation moving.

A special acknowledgment to Eduardo Mier Terán of @terrenobaldioarte , who generously shares Rogier Houwen with us for this exhibition. His understanding that a young artist’s career needs to flow—across spaces, contexts, and conversations—reflects the kind of collegiality that makes a community.

Opening: Friday, November 7th, 5pm Location: Relox 78, Centro

Can’t make the opening? No problem—we’re all running around. Just reach out and I’ll meet you at the gallery whenever works best for you. Happy to arrange a private viewing that fits your schedule.

Looking forward to sharing this with you.

In the emptiness lies potential. What appears as nothing may be the sacred pause—a clearing of space where transformation begins. Swipe to glimpse “Untamed,” where Gholami’s brushstrokes reveal how ordinary moments harbor extraordinary depth. Like the monstera plant reaching beyond its boundary, we too exist in this liminal dance between containment and expansion.

“Interlude”

Farnaz Gholami is an Iranian British, London-based artist. Encompassing painting, drawing, printmaking,
and installation, Farnaz Gholami creates expansive picture plains that reflect a sense of in-betweenness,
and more often depict ambiguous unpopulated urban landscapes or interior spaces. Based on her
diasporic experience of living in different cultures and countries, she explores the ideas of dislocation
and fragmented identity through interaction with surrounding spaces, buildings, cities, and natures,
intertwined with remembered and imagined places. In her paintings, Gholami uses familiar subjects
from different cultures such as architecture, gardens, swimming pools, street lamps, and hammocks
as devices to break the stereotype of otherness and suggest familiarity in new undefinable spaces of
inclusion. She graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art studying MA in Fine Art Painting in 2019. She
has been the recipient of The UCL Olive Prize, a finalist for the UKNA Robert Walters Awards, shortlisted
for Bloomberg New Contemporaries, and a finalist in Tiffany and Co. x Outset’s Studio Makers Prize.

In Gholami’s poignant installation “Interlude,” the wall stands not as a barrier but as a threshold, inviting us into that precious space between moments—the liminal realm where transformation quietly unfolds. Her accompanying work “The Vigil” captures this suspension brilliantly, the nighttime swimming pool embodying patient watchfulness amid stillness. To keep vigil is to remain awake while the world sleeps, to witness the subtle metamorphosis that occurs in these in-between spaces. Like sentinels at the border of change, we find ourselves suspended between what was and what will be. The wall in “Interlude” becomes both witness and passage, reminding us that transformation requires boundaries to push against, thresholds to cross. In the quiet watchfulness of vigil, we discover the courage to inhabit these transitional spaces where our most profound evolutions take root.

Untamed

In this work, @farnaz.gholami interrogates the conceptual boundaries of spatial and cultural representation. The painting operates as a critical exploration of liminality, challenging traditional modes of pictorial containment through its material and compositional strategies.
