“An installation of 32 abstract monoprints, which seem to have been made quickly and spontaneously. Opposite it hangs a large piece of vinyl, Relief on Hospital Floor, in which thousands of tiny shapes have been cut out by hand. That must have been a heathen job, unlike the monoprints. The vinyl form is inked but not printed. You could say that it is a semi- finished product that has been elevated to an abstract art object. In doing so, it draws attention to the craft side of artistry, making, while the monoprints focus more on the conceptual dimension: the idea, the inspiration. But, certainly in Lawrence's case, there is another aspect of being an artist: the message. This is discussed in various snow-white works that look like sculptures. They consist of a layer many centimeters thick in which the artist worked vigorously with a chisel, as if he was carving marble. The shapes evoke associations with destruction and chaos. However, the material does not look as hard as marble up close, it also smells a bit strange. It turns out – just have a look in the catalog – to be animal fat, mixed with wax. For Lawrence, the material itself has meaning here. The basic material, he says, is obtained by violence on animals. We don't realize that enough, says the artist. This work is called Seen but not heard. And there are many forms of “unheard of ” violence in the world, he adds.” Excerpt from ‘Geëngageerde alleskunner’ by Dirk van Ginkel, translated from the original Dutch, published in the Leeuwarder Courant, 19 November 2021 Today and tomorrow last chance to dive into the show Broken Tools by Dale Lawrence #brokentools #dalelawrence #hedendaagsekunst #monotype #reliefprint #artinstallation

This week is your last chance to come and see the show! “The title relates to the idea that we like to ‘fix’ things. But you can’t fix broken things or a broken system unless you have broken tools. I mean, you can change or adapt a system, but if the system in itself is not ok, you don’t fix anything really. Cultural systems inform political and economic systems, by that I mean culture precedes politics and economics, it becomes them. In that sense, art is primary as art has a direct role in addressing issues about power and violence.” Excerpt from the interview ‘Broken Tools’ with Manuela Klerkx, published on galleryviewer.com on 22 November 2021 “What I mean to say is that one person can not resolve all problems but we can, literally and metaphorically, shine a light on them by doing the best we can. So this piece in a way addresses the weight of expectation, of responsibility.” Excerpt from the interview ‘Broken Tools’ with Manuela Klerkx, published on galleryviewer.com on 22 November 2021 @galleryviewer @manuelaklerkx #brokentools #tentoonstelling #conceptualart #rainbowwarriors #fix #tools #southafricanartist
