Geo Sessions is back, and registration is open! On October 14 and 15, experts from USGS, ICEYE, Shell, NOAA, Esri, The Nature Conservancy, Planet, the City of Detroit, Trimble, and more will come together online for two days of sessions focused on spectral, SAR, lidar, and GeoAI.

Each data modality gets a dedicated two-hour track. Topics range from using spectral data to locate critical minerals to applying lidar for wildfire prevention and recovery to monitoring infrastructure with SAR. Separate focus webinars cover thermal infrared imaging, hydrospatial mapping, and GeoAI-driven infrastructure management.

The sessions are built for practitioners already working with these data types and for teams evaluating where spectral, SAR, lidar, or GeoAI fit into their programs.

🌳 Did you catch this session at #EsriUC2026? 🌳

NV5's Andrew Brenner and Michael Forlenza joined Teal Wyckoff of The Nature Conservancy to present the Detroit Tree Census: A New Perspective on the Urban Forest. It was a fascinating look at what GIS can reveal when you start asking big questions about a city's green infrastructure.

The team mapped approximately 1.4 million trees across Detroit, uncovering that the city's canopy cover sits at just 23.7% citywide, with dramatic variation by neighborhood, ranging from 2.7% in Waterworks Park to 57.3% in Riverdale. They also dug into why Detroit's canopy declined in the first place — from Dutch elm disease in the 1950s to the emerald ash borer in the 2000s, and how that history created both a data challenge and a community trust challenge that GIS helped address.

The work goes beyond counting trees. It's about understanding where urban canopy gaps are creating heat islands, flooding risk, and public health impacts, and then using that data to drive smarter, more equitable investment in the urban forest.
