Most adults go their whole lives without ever building their own toolbox. Vivian just did it. Pretty darn cool.

Our first-ever Tools to Make Tools: Build Like a Boatbuilder class just wrapped up! Taught by Joel as part of our Junior Shipwright Series, students spent the week learning traditional boatbuilding skills while building custom wooden toolboxes and tools of their own.

Not a bad way to spend a week.

(And a shoutout to @grizzlymachines for keeping our shop stocked with the tools to make it all happen) taken in Northwest Maritime by @nw_maritime

๐Ÿ“ + ๐Ÿชš + a whole lot of sawdust.

Students in Applied Math Through Woodworking & Boatbuilding, part of our Junior Shipwright class series, are measuring, cutting, building, problem-solving, and learning what happens when fractions, angles, ratios, and geometry leave the page and get put to work.

A huge thank you to @grizzlymachines for helping make hands-on learning like this possible! by @nw_maritime

Meet Austin and Max! Two juniors at Maritime High School in the Marine Construction pathway who are getting hands-on experience in welding.

We stopped by today to see what students have been working on and hear from Austin and Max about the science behind welding and the skills theyโ€™re developing.

This is what our Blue Schools Initiative is all about: connecting students with hands-on learning and real career opportunities in the maritime industry.

And a huge congratulations to the students and educators at @themaritimehs for earning Gold for Best Trade/Technical School in the 2026 Best in the PNW competition! by @nw_maritime

Meet Halee and AJ, our two instructors for this session of Girlsโ€™ Boat Project! Both are captains with extensive maritime backgrounds, bringing years of experience and a whole lot of knowledge to the Boatshop.

We sat down with them to talk about what the girls are learning beyond boatbuilding, from problem-solving and working together to trusting their own skills to build confidence that carries into every part of life.

They also share their experiences working in a male-dominated industry and why female representation and leadership matter. Having women to learn from and look up to helps young girls see a future for themselves in maritime and beyond.

Today is only day two of this two-month session! Keep checking back over the coming weeks to see the progress the girls make on the vessel theyโ€™re building together. taken in Northwest Maritime by @nw_maritime

Another look at what we do here at Northwest Maritime! This episode of NW Explorer by @cascadepbs takes a look at the Swan Hotel, which is owned by Northwest Maritime and helps fund our programming! In addition to being a great location right in the heart of Port Townsend, we're also dog-friendly and have some pretty sweet amenities!

The episode also heads into our Boatshop, where Joel shares a bit about the transformative power of getting people together to build boats. Give it a watch to learn a little more about where you can stay when visiting Port Townsend and the work your stay helps support!

Thanks again to @cascadepbs for spending some time with us! by @nw_maritime

Thirty million oysters and 150 acres restored. That is a huge accomplishment made up of thousands of smaller acts of care. Weโ€™re incredibly proud to congratulate our friends at Puget Sound Restoration Fund on a milestone over a decade in the making.

In 2010, only about 150 acres of dense native Olympia oyster beds remained across the Puget Sound. Today, PSRF and more than 100 partners have restored another 150 acres, doubling that footprint and planting 30 million Olympia oysters along the way.

Weโ€™re especially proud that students across several Northwest Maritime programs, including Port Townsend Maritime Academy, Team Longboat, Workplace Experience, and Maritime Discovery Program, got to play a role in that story. Through our Olympia Oyster Restoration Project, students took the lead in raising oysters right here on our Port Townsend campus, caring for them from microscopic larvae to juveniles while learning about water quality, shellfish biology, and their role in the larger ecosystem.
Students got hands-on with the project, from studying oyster life cycles, to assessing populations, doing feedings, and tank system maintenance. Eventually, those oysters left the classroom for the tideflats, where they became part of the larger restoration effort led by our partners.

Congratulations to our friends at @restorationfund and everyone who has had a hand in bringing the Olympia oyster back. Weโ€™re grateful our students and educators got to play a small part in this incredible effort.
