Inspirational presentation this morning at the NMTA Marina & Boatyard Conference by Jake Beattie, CEO of Northwest Maritime. Sure, funny stories about the R2AK cracked us up, but his talk about connecting younger folks to the water (and eventual careers) through community and education was what moved us! 👍 #maritime #education

This is some of my previous work that I was thinking about when I made this poster for @woodenboatfestival
Head to their page and vote for your favorite!

A boat looks nice when it’s in a circle. You can see some of these circles are inked freehand and some used a guide, like a bowl or a pottery bat.
First boat is sort of a riff on “toadstool.”
I like finding objects and subjects that represent certain boats and the owners, like the penguins in the drawing of Opus, which reference the cartoon penguin on her hull. Behind the penguins is a pattern of fish, shellfish, and starfish.
The ukulele and skates remind me of fellow el toro sailor @sparkle.flowers and Lil’ Bucket. I also snuck in a snail by the nameplate and @treshombres.rum ship in the background!
The Sea Fever spots on the bottom are a book with part of the namesake poem by John Masefield and the @centerforwoodenboats boathouse, where the owner has for many years been a board member. You can see him holding the shrouds. My favorite part is probably the North Star and the constellations. I forgot there was a whale breaching in that one. Kind of hard to see…oh well.

Some fun details in my @woodenboatfestival poster:
1 and 2– Models of Gunther the Port Townsend whale and the Pt. Defiance lighthouse. I decided that unlike the boat portraits the items would all be at the same scale, and making PT landmarks into models naturally followed. The lighthouse was originally in a snowglobe but it was too small to read.
3-A “carving” of a very stylized shipsaw. Look it up they’re so cool!
4-Calendar with a picture of @nw_maritime building. Another way to show a large thing without breaking the scale of the poster. Rainbows are a great part of living in the pnw, and I also thought of the many rainbow flags I see every year at the festival, so it seemed appropriate.
5-Fiddle and sheet music for “acres of clams.” This fiddle was originally a guitar, but again, the scale was a bit off. It wouldn’t fit in the box so it became a fiddle. Another happy accident as the curly bit (?) rhymes nicely with the other spirals and curls in the image.

Go to @woodenboatfestival page and vote for your favorite poster. Thank you!

Last call for Girls’ Boat Project! Know a girl who might want to learn to build boats? Send this her way!

Girls ages 11–14 spend eight weeks in the Boatshop learning woodworking and boatbuilding alongside female role models from our team who are skilled in woodworking, boatbuilding, and other maritime skills.

The Wooden Boat Festival is put on by Northwest Maritime here in Port Townsend, where we offer youth classes, camps, and skill-building programs year-round. Girls’ Boat Project starts tomorrow, and we’re making one last push to get the word out!

Scholarships are available, and no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. If cost is a barrier, please reach to us out or apply for a scholarship during registration!

Wednesdays, 1:30–4 PM | October 7–December 16

Scenes from today’s Great Port Townsend Bay Kinetic Sculpture Race! Easily a couple thousand people cheering on teams from all over the PNW as they entered the water portion of the kourse. Too krazy, too kewl! #kineticsculpturerace

For the third year in a row, Haida Sails was invited to join the Wooden Boat Festival on S’Klallam and Chemakum lands in Port Townsend, Washington!

It was so good to reconnect with old friends, meet new ones, and share some of the exciting work we’ve been up to since last year. Attendees got a sneak peek at our woven cedar sail (nearing completion! 👀), and we zoomed in @jaalen_e from the carving shed to give an update on the 50+ foot voyaging canoe he is carving for the project.

Our presentation reached capacity before attendees were even allowed into the building! We can’t express how grateful we are for the incredible interest and support for Haida Sails. It is truly humbling to see this project continue to connect with so many people.

The Wooden Boat Festival is something our team looks forward to every year, spending time with the beautiful sailing community, eating good food, sneaking in some vintage shopping, and immersing ourselves in all things sailing. We learn so much every time we come down, and we’re already looking forward to next year!

Haawa to our friends at Northwest Maritime for inviting us back and for hosting such a beautiful event ❤️

See you next year!
