2025 - Movement • Flexibility • Openness • Saturation

I have never packed and unpacked my suitcases so much in one year, but 2025 brought nothing but bountiful opportunities to explore new lands and reconnect with past ones. I was able to visit 3 new countries (Greece, Germany, and London) as well as return home to Mississippi twice for the first time in 2.5 years. I said bittersweet goodbyes to a world so magical it out-glimmers Disney and dreamy hellos to communities wrapped in F.U.B.U and hair grease. I am grateful for so many other memorable moments in 2025, and humbly wait to see what God has in store for me in 2026. by @nyla.js

MAJOR

As a young black girl born and raised in Canton, MS, all I have ever been surrounded by is majorette dance. The majorettes and the band are the heartbeat of the community, pushing out the pulse that lets us march in unison. Majorettes are the epitome of what every little black girl wanted to be: beautiful, fierce, confident, and the list goes on and on. My aunt was a majorette, my cousins were majorettes, and of course I became one too. My cousin and I danced on a team we created called the Princess Diamonds for 5-6 years, then she initiated another team called Dynamic Barbies, to which we danced together for a few more years. I initially thought my time with majorette would end after Dynamic Barbies, but come to find out, majorette dance would bring me to Hamburg, Germany for my first-ever international performance at @kampnagel_hamburg . Being a part of MAJOR is such a full circle moment for me, and it feels amazing to combine passions of the past with passions of the present. Thank you @gemgemdi for the space to live my inner child’s wildest dreams. Thank you @tsaizperez , @myssirobinson , and @creatersim for holding the team down and building the canals for the Magic to flow. Thank you to my cast mates for your generosity, trust, and sisterhood (@fulloutfarrish @songaziza @jaipeedubs @moonchildbinch @__selahvictoria @biglillamb ). Thank you to @__shide and @shelsitiara for being my first real role models within majorette. My idea of majorette would not exist without you. Thank you @adilliar for being our first coach and leader as well as greatest advocate❤️

21 days since the closing of Sleep No More and I have been processing what it means to mourn a magical world that is quite as vivid and rich, yet equally mundane as this real one. Almost every day for two years, I have embodied two wonderful women (with a final third, Maizie, at the very end), and each time I went into their world, I told myself just to live their life. That’s it, just live their life. I’m forever fascinated at how uninterrupted reality is inside of the McKittrick Hotel. You no longer exist as you are, but as spectators, instigators, co-conspirators, and executioners of the most complex acts of 1939.

It has been the greatest privilege to be in a space of constant play and chance. To be transfixed each day by the worlds my partners and I built, allowing ourselves to seep seamlessly into the lives of these fantastical beings. To be alive is to dance, and boy did we dance, but we also altered time, changed temperature, prophesized, confessed our deepest desires, screamed, broke hearts, laughed maniacally, and so much more for the sake of being a part of something larger than ourselves. With Fate Witch, Dewinter, and Maizie, I embedded so much of myself but also black histories and lore to honor the realities of my ancestors. It’s been amazing to dream of these worlds and give voice to such history while creating my own questions and solutions in the present. I am proud to lay those explorations to rest as they are exactly where they are meant to be. However, I have absolutely taken the emboldened power, audaciousness, and uninhibited spirit they bore inside of me.

Though this is the end, I am eternally grateful for every person who has ever touched the McKittrick Hotel/SNM and made “living their life” my greatest joy for the past two years. ❤️
