It was such a treat to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival at Mee Sum Café on Pell Street with Chinatown advocate and cookbook author Grace Young and with Karen Liu of Grand Tea & Imports.

We learned from Grace and Karen that the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival is a time when the harvest bounty is becoming more abundant, so friends and family gather over tea and mooncakes to celebrate that bounty and gaze at the moon.

Soon Karen poured the first cups of tea and Grace passed around the first bites of mooncake, and we were guided through a truly educational and delicious tasting.

The first pairing was a subtly sweet pineapple-filled mooncake from @bodhivegetarian on Mulberry Street and a tea called Taishan Wild Grown Cloud & Mist White Tea, from Karen’s family’s ancestral home.

Next, Grace gave us wedges of a rich black-sesame mooncake from @papersonscafe on Mott Street, while Karen poured a hand-picked, charcoal-roasted tea (from her father’s village) that was called Taishan Ancestral Sijiu Country Black Tea.

For the third pairing, Grace passed around a wonderfully distinctive mooncake made with white lotus paste and salted duck-egg yolks from @doublecrispybakery on Grand Street. She explained that this was the mooncake she grew up eating. It was intriguingly complex and beautifully balanced, both sweet and salty, and it paired perfectly with our last tea, Tangerine Puerth, which was also quite complex.

As the afternoon wound down, Karen told us that her family was honored to play a role in keeping traditions alive and connecting people in Chinatown to their hometowns, adding that it was gratifying to work with tea makers who get excited about seeing their tea leaves sold in NYC for the first time.

We hope you’ll take a trip down to Chinatown soon and stop in at 298 Grand Street so that you, too, can have some of the Liu Family’s ambrosial teas. by @nywca

Mid-Autumn Moon Festival: Tea & Mooncakes

Join Grace Young and Alice and Karen Liu (second-generation owners of Grand Tea & Imports) as they co-host a special tea tasting in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival.

One of the most beloved festivals in Chinese culture, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for family and friends to gather, give thanks, and celebrate an abudant harvest and togetherness. Traditionally, people gaze at the luminous full moon while sipping tea and sharing sweet mooncakes, whose round shape symbolizes reunion, harmony, and completeness.

Alice and Karen Liu will guide guests through a tasting of specially selected Chinese teas paired with traditional mooncakes, while sharing the stories and traditions behind this centuries-old celebration. Each guest will receive a selection of teas from Grand Tea & Imports’ fine collection to take home.
