A perfect school holiday activity that’s just as entertaining for adults ✨🪩

Tomorrow at lunchtime, @nzdanceco brings a free performance to Takutai Square by dancer and choreographer Sean MacDonald (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Raukawa).

Matariki for Tamariki follows the journey of a group of friends throughout Aotearoa during the Matariki season, an annual custom that honours ongoing relationships to place and each other.

DJ @rainkatayanagi will play before and after the performance, and @mamashangi will be serving hāngī 🎧🍲

Home, Land and Sea—we’re incredibly grateful for the people and partnerships that continue to make this work possible.

For the past two weeks, we’ve been remounting this magical work with Sean in the studio, and we feel honoured to bring it back for its sixth iteration

Here are some beautiful images from last week during Anya’s awesome process 🌳

Āhua has been an incredible opportunity for the company dancers to develop their choreographic voices and explore their unique ways of leading space.

We are incredibly proud — congratulations to ‘Isope, Caterina, Eden and Anya on an amazing four weeks! taken in Wellesley Studios by @nzdanceco

Our final week of Āhua concluded with a joyful process led by Anya 🌳

Her piece was inspired by ideas of dreams, nostalgia, childhood games, and commercial dance. She describes it as a coming-of-age work.

Anya wanted both the process and the final piece to feel playful and joyous for the dancers and the audience — and we definitely think she achieved that!

Eden wrapped up Week 3 of Āhua with a powerful investigative process, diving into themes of grief and numbness.

Structured as four chapters of the same story 🌳

1. Point of Grief
Is the moment that grief is felt, the start of isolation from all the joy and life nearby that doesn’t reach you and just passes by.

2. Chaos & Denial
Explores the physical effort to deny and reject what you feel in an attempt to protect yourself.

3. Numbing
Is about expressing your emotions then shutting them off, creating a mask and training yourself to be numb.

4. Numbness
Explores a detachment from feeling and a descent into dysfunction without letting the mask slip.

Congratulations Eden on your amazing mahi ☀️ taken in Wellesley Studios by @nzdanceco
