One for the whole whānau 🖤

@nzdanceco’s lunchtime Matariki for Tamariki performance on Wednesday brought storytelling, music and dance to Takutai Square, exploring the nine whetū of the constellation and the stories they carry.

A perfect school holiday activity that’s just as entertaining for adults ✨🪩

Tomorrow at lunchtime, @nzdanceco brings a free performance to Takutai Square by dancer and choreographer Sean MacDonald (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Raukawa).

Matariki for Tamariki follows the journey of a group of friends throughout Aotearoa during the Matariki season, an annual custom that honours ongoing relationships to place and each other.

DJ @rainkatayanagi will play before and after the performance, and @mamashangi will be serving hāngī 🎧🍲

Mānawatia a Matariki! ✨

The stars are rising – and so is the mahi of our whānau. Here’s where you’ll find our artists this Matariki season:

1. 2023 Laureate Sean MacDonald (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Raukawa) brings Matariki for Tamariki to stages across the motu with the @nzdanceco – nine whetū, one big adventure for the whole whānau. Performances in Tāmaki Makaurau until 15 July.

2. 2025 Laureate @reuben_paterson (Ngāti Rangitihi, Ngāi Tūhoe, Tūhourangi) charts the heavens in Tūhononga at @melanierogergallery, Tāmaki Makaurau – Cook Island black pearls and Japanese freshwater pearls mapped to the exact celestial coordinates of Matariki, glittering like the night sky itself. On view until 25 July.

3. 2025 Harriet Friedlander Resident @ana_iti (Te Rarawa) features in Tātai Tuarangi: Star Seeds, Sound Waves and Ceremonies at @wairaumaoriartgallery, Whangārei – a collection of works attuned to the sky – to lunar time, celestial movement, seasonal transitions and the vastness of the cosmos. On view until 19 July.

4. As Puanga rises over Whanganui, so does something special at @sarjeantgallery. He Ao Āpōpō, He Ao Tea: Māori Futures is a bold, hopeful exhibition about manifesting Māori futures – among the artist line-up is 2022 Springboard recipient @tewa.aa and his mentor, @rontekawa – tuakana and teina, showing together. Artist talks on Saturday 11 July: 11am –12pm. Exhibition on view until 25 October.

Such an amazing opportunity for our Kura to have The New Zealand Dance Company performing on our very own stage!

The students thoroughly enjoyed the performance, and it was a huge privilege to get to meet the director, the choreographer, and the dancers afterwards🕺💃
