Book festival on the island of O‘ahu that celebrates local authors (highlighting indie authors, but open to all), presses, illustrators, & book clubs.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
We are pleased to announce the 2027 (and first annual) O’ahu Book Fest! Saturday, February 20th from 10am-4pm.

As our first event as a board, we want to go big - the feedback from the Indie book events was “we want more!” So… here we are, in all 12 of the Blaisdell Center’s Hawaii Suites.

We’ll have 2 rooms separated for panels on writing, publishing, creating (exact panel topics to be announced closer to the festival).

We’ll have 1 room sectioned off just for keiki book readings and activities.

And we’ll have the other 9 rooms open - and filled with authors, artists, small and/or local presses, bookish items, and maybe even some narrators or filmmakers?

Vendor applications are open with the link in the bio. We are open to traditionally published and indie published books. We are open to every genre, and want to see representation there for all readers, from board books to graphic novels to spicy romances to historical fiction and non-fiction, to psychological thrillers and beyond.

We’re bringing back Blind Date with a Book and the Scavenger Hunt. We already have some cool swag to encourage reading for the keiki thanks to @raisingcanes - and we’re open to suggestions as we ramp up planning.

Plenty easy parking with a flat rate - so come and hang out, get your scavenger hunt card filled out and enjoy some panels. No need to rush or worry about a meter.

And as always, the event itself is free to attend. You can reserve your spot for free on Event Brite.

Love this event? Want to see more events in 2027 - let us know what you hope to see either at this event or for future events in the comments!

Want to support? Even a five dollar donation would mean the world to us as we work to get this organization off the ground!

See you in February!

Aloha!
We’ve been hard at work behind the scenes and happy to announce we are now able to accept donations to get our (pending) non-profit off the ground!

These donations will help us put on the February festival, set up our initial business necessities, and allow us to start planning additional events and activities for 2027 and 2028.

You can use the QR code or use the link in our bio.

Please note that Oʻahu Book Fest has applied for 501(c)(3) status with the IRS. If approved, your donation will be tax‑deductible retroactively to our incorporation date. Until then, it is not deductible. We can’r say for sure if we will get approval before the end of this calendar year, but we sure hope so!

Up next - official announcement of festival venue!

Vendor applications for our February 20, 2027 O’ahu Book Fest event are open!
Link in bio.

We will have over 30 vendor spots, and we want to offer variety! Our goal is to offer the reading community all genres, all ages, all types of books (looking at you graphic novels and audiobooks - we want to see representation!).

We are open to local indie book stores bringing inventory, we would LOVE to see more of the local presses represented, and we are also looking at potentially having some bookish crafts as well.

We definitely still want authors (indie published, traditionally published, small press published), artists, and book clubs.

The application takes 8 minutes or less to complete, and there is no application fee. We will be doing rolling acceptances, so applying early gets you more chances for selection. We have 1/2 tables and full tables available (tables are 8ft, so a 1/2 is 4ft of space).

Want to be part of the festival but can’t commit to the 6 hours of vending? Please fill out an application and note “Don’t want a table, but would like to be considered for….” Panel, keiki book reading and activity, book reading for YA or adult audiences, etc.

We can’t wait to see your applications! 📚💙📚

Woohoo! Only 5 days after posting about tickets being open to reserve, and we already have 100 tickets reserved for the February event! Don’t worry - we have space for plenty more attendees, so keep reserving your spots!

We are so stoked (and grateful!) to see the enthusiasm for this event. These ticket reservations are going to allow us to plan wonderful keiki activities, an epic scavenger hunt, and some really exciting and new panel topics for the community!

We’re working behind the scenes to find some really fun collabs, as well. We are firm believers that this community of book lovers are meant to grow together, not as competition for each other.

Let us know in the comments any panel topics that you’re interested in. Some options we’re thinking about include (but aren’t limited to):
Tropes
Researching for Fiction/Non-Fiction
Meta Data for Self Publishing
Book Club Highlights
Writing Stories for Our Keiki

Let us know which topics you find interesting as a reader/writer/author/future author.
Interested in a collab? Please DM us here. by @oahubookfest

Interested in having your logo displayed at our festival? Now through December 14th, any business (or maybe you’re an individual that wants their name displayed) that donates $50 or above to our pending non-profit to help us get this festival and programming off to a strong start will get a special thank-you.

During your donation, you’ll have an option to select having your logo displayed. We’ll follow-up with an email to get the image file.

Where will logos be displayed? They will be on custom printed tablecloths at the welcome table and blind date with a book table. If we get enough donations, some will even be dsiplayed on signs throughout the event, such as large printed schedules.

Please note: Oʻahu Book Fest has applied for 501(c)(3) status with the IRS. If approved, your donation will be tax‑deductible retroactively to our incorporation date. Until then, it is not deductible.

As a brand-new organization with a community-wide festival on the way, every dollar helps us to keep this event (and future events) free to attend.

Please reserve your FREE ticket(s) on Event Brite for yourself and your family or friends. (Link in bio)

Reserving tickets will
a) give us a better idea for planning the event itself
b) allow us to get a good attendance count for future events and partnerships - having numerical data like this can be the difference between getting a grant or not.
And
 c) following the Event Brite page means you’ll get early info for future events - and a reminder email 2 days before the event with any extra key info (like the schedule for the event) that will help you make sure not to miss anything you’re excited about!

We promise we aren’t creating a mailing list to send people a bunch of emails - of we were, we’d be open about it so only the people that want emails could sign up (no plans for that at this time - of we ever do, it would be a specific sign-up). We have the Event Brite for the event set up to 1 email with your tickets and 1 email two days before the event and that’s it.

We look@forward to celebrating human literacy and art with you, O’ahu!
(To be honest, that second slide was supposed to be on the Meet the Board post at the end but I (Cass) forgot it, and didn’t want to waste Alisa’s work since she’s been helping make some of the newer slides 🤗

There will be no banned books at our event… because we don’t ban books.
It’s banned book week - read something rebellious.

Limiting learning, blocking diverse voices, and trying to control the narrative by requiring the removal of specific books from public libraries and schools needs to stop. If you feel that way - take action by making the calls or writing the emails to your legislative representatives. Libraries play a crucial role in the accessibility of literacy, learning, and books for all.

As promised - we are pleased to introduce the founding board of the O’ahu Book Fest!

Cass Kim is our President.
Fred Tucher is our Vice President.
May Salcedo is our Treasurer.
Alisa Vincent if our Secretary.
Cami Walters-Nihipali is a Director.
Elena Ching is a Director.
Jonathan Wong is a Director.

Our goal within the goal of literacy, book, art, and human creativity celebration and promotion is transparency. We want the festival to be successful, to be able to create a variety of events, learning opportunities, and collaborations. For us, that means staying true to course, working with integrity and holding each other accountable while communicating with respect and allowing each board member an equal voice at the table.

We had so many wonderfully qualified applicants - it was a blessing and a difficult decision. It is our intention to stagger board member length of service, so if you are interested, stay tuned for mid-summer next year to see if any positions open up!

O‘ahu Book Fest - nice to meet you.
We have officially completed our board adopted bylaws and articles of incorporation. While the (pending) non-profit is jumping off of and created based on the need shown by the O‘ahu Indie Book Fest, it is an entirely new and different organization.

Yes, we will still host a Book Festival (annually, and probably some pop-ups - time will tell).

But now that we are an entirely new entity, we are also....
-Run by a board with bylaws

-Focused on Charitable and literacy-based work (community, community, community!)

-Planning on creating a wider variety of community engagement and writer/artist/creator opportunities and hopefully collaborations

What to know:
-It’s easier to assume the prior book festival instagram page than to build a whole new one, since the readers and writers and artists have discovered/are discovering it.

-It’s possible we will be creating a new logo in the future.

-We hope to create an independent website in the near future (but that takes funding).

-We cannot fundraise until we reach full non-proft status and register with the state Attorney General.

-We’ll be introducing our board members to you soon.

501 (3) (c) Update
Done:
-DCCA Filing Accepted
-Board Formed
-Federal Filing Started

Upcoming:
-Continue Planning for our big annual event February 20th, 2027!
-Opening Vendor Applications - Stay tuned, we anticipate opening vendor application within the next 60 days - AFTER we announce the location of the festival!
-Funding the Festival - We’ll be making announcements about cost of vendor tables, as well as opportunities to sponsor or otherwise support the event. This first year will be our trickiest year due to the decision to create a non-profit for the festival, and the prolonged timeline for that official status.

How YOU can help:
-Like and Comment - every bit of engagement helps more people find us!
-Share this instagram page - we have a much bigger space planned, so we want to make sure we utilize it.
- Get your writer/artist friends hyped to be a vendor! Our goal will always remain to keep the costs of participating as a vendor reasonable. We also want to make sure we’re including more variety. We want graphic novels, comic books, ‘zines of all sizes, kid’s books, middle grade books, young adult books, adult books that are spicy, adult books that aren’t spicy, fiction, non-fiction - we want it ALL to be represented.

Stay tuned. Stay excited. Stay with us.

Look, we said we have a lot of exciting news, and we meant it! 2nd annual event will be happening February 20, 2027.

While we work to gain the 501(c)(3) non-profit status, we’re still planning. A venue has been secured, but we can’t announce it officially until a) the new board votes to approve, and b) the contract is signed. (And ideally c) we get some initial funding!)

Here’s what we can say:
- it will be an all-ages event
- it will include keiki readings and projects
- it will include panels
- it will include the scavenger hunt
- it will be bigger (More authors! More time! More Space!)
- it will be held where there is plentiful flat-rate all day parking as an option
- it will be in Honolulu

Be on the look out for #author and #artist vendor applications to open this fall.

We’re beyond excited to see you all! Help us to continue to grow by spreading the word - tell your bookish friends, tell your writing friends, tell six out of every seven people you see from now til February!

Ready for having a book in one hand and a refreshing brew in the other? 🍻📚
Join us on June 6th from 4-6 pm for a very special read-up at @lanikaibrewing!

Whether you're reading the latest bestseller romance novel, listening to a thriller audiobook, or scrolling through a fantasy book on your e-reader, all formats of reading and all types of genres are accepted! Just come and read something you love!

We will have a dedicated time for reading and optional socializing throughout the night (it is a silent book club after all, haha!).

We have one special twist to this SBC! After our silent reading time, we will walk over to the Oahu Indie Book Festival YA and Adult pop-up event at @volcanichawaii! Why go alone when you can go with a community of book lovers?!

We'd love for everyone to join, but no worries if you can't go; just know you'll be missed! 😭

📌 Tentative Plan:

4-4:15ish
Optional socializing, talking about what you're reading, ordering food/drinks

4:15-5:45
Silent reading (or talking about books; there's no real agenda, haha!)

5:45
Start slowly, heading over to the YA pop-up event!

6-8
Hanging out at the @oahuindiebookfestival YA and Adult Pop-Up.

Come for part of it or come for the whole thing!

Pro Tips:

Sign the rock gym's waiver (it's on their website) ahead of time so you can quickly check in & get started on the Scavenger Hunt!

No shoes are allowed on the mats in the gyms, so if you don't like to have your dogs out, plan to bring a pair of socks!

See you there! @lifewithnikki24 is our host! by @oahubookfest
