Drawn from the visual language of India, the rugs are einterpreted through Luke Irwin’s distinctive eye, then brought to life by Obeetee’s master weavers on the loom. Rich colour, intricate detailing and the depth of hand-knotting give the design a sense of movement, turning a familiar symbol into something entirely unexpected.

The result is more than a rug. It is a piece that changes the energy of a room, bringing scale, character and a little wildness underfoot.

One holds generations of craft knowledge; the other, years of composing.

This week at Obeetee in New Delhi, AD India and Obeetee (@obeetee) brought British designer Luke Irwin's (@lukeirwinrugs) new collection to life, not as a launch, but as something to discover. The evening moved from idea to loom to room, followed by a conversation with Mrinalini Ghadiok (@ghadiok), Head of Editorial Content at AD India, Luke Irwin and Rudra Chatterjee, Chairman at Obeetee, moderated by Varun Rana.

The collection unfolded across four capsules: An India Story, The Marine Story, Denim and New Mosaic and Metallurgy. Its jewel-hued carpets brought together figurative imagery, abstract textures, geometric compositions and weathered metallic surfaces, reimagining the enduring art of hand-knotted rug-making through a contemporary lens. by @obeetee

Every work of art begins with a conversation, an exchange of ideas, references, and sensibilities that eventually finds form.

For Luke Irwin, that process begins with combining art, history, and material into one conversation in tune with contemporary interiors. His work draws from the past without being bound by it, translating references, textures, and ideas into pieces that feel at once considered and unexpected.

Now, in collaboration with Obeetee, this approach takes shape through a collection where art becomes a medium for interpretation, where the rug is not simply placed within a room, but becomes part of its visual language.

Before it reaches the loom, Verde begins with a brush. Shapes emerge, colours find their rhythm, and nature is translated into lines, layers, and movement. The painting process becomes the first expression of a collection inspired by the organic beauty of the natural world. The collection does not replicate it, but interprets it through a more abstract lens.

Obeetee Craft Studio presented Wild Silk: Material, Making & Textile Design for the 21st Century in London as part of Selvedge Textile Month.

The presentation explored tasar wild silk as a living material—shaped by generations of knowledge, skilled making and cultural exchange. Through research, material experimentation and weaving, the studio examined lesser-known textile constructions and reinterpreted techniques associated with 16th- and 17th-century Indo-Portuguese colchas, bringing tasar into dialogue with new craft communities and contemporary forms of design.

This forms part of Obeetee Craft Studio’s continuing enquiry into how traditional knowledge can shape the future of design: recovering endangered techniques, creating new possibilities for sustainable materials, and sustaining the makers and craft communities of Eastern India.
