The Linear Edit | Mumbai

A 1500 sq. ft. Mumbai home with a contemporary European sensibility — defined by clean lines, sculptural forms and a warm, restrained material palette.

Originally planned as a 4BHK, the home was reworked to create a more considered and generous layout, allowing the spaces to feel open, connected and fluid.

The living room brings this language to life through warm neutrals, rich wood tones, layered textures and softly curved forms. Furniture by (@nivorain ) complements the interiors through sculptural silhouettes, refined proportions and material warmth, becoming a natural extension of the overall design.

Dark wood at the entrance creates a moment of contrast before opening into a lighter living space, while carefully framed openings establish a sense of continuity throughout the home.

With the sea forming a natural backdrop, the interiors remain intentionally understated — allowing light, proportion, texture and craftsmanship to take centre stage.

The Linear Edit is an exploration of European-inspired restraint, interpreted for contemporary living in Mumbai.

Letter From The Editor

India’s crafts renaissance is real, so is the rush to cash in on it. In this special issue, TVOF asks how craft should be written about and promoted, and how India can work through what is at once a pilgrimage and a pilferage. Given that the blur is perhaps only intensifying.

There is barely a room in India this year that does not want to tell you about something handmade or artisanal. You hear it on fashion week runways, in a mall atrium’s festive installation, at pop-ups everywhere and in sixty thousand 60-second reels. A weaver’s fingers on a loom, a dyer knee-deep in indigo, an embroiderer’s needle moving through a kantha. Craft has become the story everyone wants to tell.

The first big fact is that India is going through a genuine crafts renaissance. You can see it in craft’s growing ties with art and fine art, in museum exhibitions curated with pedagogical and contemporary rigour, and in the institutes, patrons and buyers backing craft in every way they can. But a renaissance is also a market, and every market draws a crowd. Where there is a crowd, there is bound to be a blur.
With pilgrimage and pilferage travelling together on the same cart, craftwashing has begun to hustle for space. It takes the noble glow of the handmade without taking on its obligations: knowing the maker, paying for time, crediting skill, and accepting that real craft is slow and limited.

When we began discussing this issue more than a month ago, the easy route was obvious: celebrate the boom, with its exhibitions, sales and launches. We argued about it for days. In the end we chose to hold both truths at once, the rewards and the risks, because a magazine that only applauds is not doing its job. Hence the coverline: The Rewards and Risks of Craft as the New Black. “The new black” is fashion’s oldest compliment and its most dangerous one. Every new black eventually goes out of style.

I like how his den feels during the day. The light coming through the blinds, the brick, the timber, the leather-strapped chairs. There’s a little bit of everything here, but nothing is trying too hard.

I wanted this room to have a bit of an edge, without losing the comfort of a room you actually want to spend time in.

The chairs do that rather well, though they may be a little too good at convincing you to put your feet up instead of getting any work done.

It’s his corner of the house, and I like that it feels that way without being disconnected from everything else.

A living room where European charm feels like home.

Every family has a room that seems to remember everything. The celebrations, familiar voices, stories told a hundred times and the favourite seats everyone returns to.

Over time, a living room becomes a keeper of shared memories, where generations connect and ordinary moments become stories worth holding on to.

It is where busy days slow down, conversations linger and simply being together feels like enough. These are the moments that make a house feel like home.

Inspired by the timeless charm of classic European interiors, this home brings together an all white palette, delicate detailing and warm gold accents for an atmosphere of understated grandeur.

The foyer sets the tone with a striking gold framed circular mirror, rich dark wood panelling and slender brass accents. A sculptural console, curated decor and fresh flowers soften the grandeur, creating a welcoming entrance that hints at the elegance within.

Step into the living room, where European sophistication meets everyday warmth.

The all white palette creates an airy, serene atmosphere, while delicate floral wallpaper adds romantic charm.

Plush neutral sofas invite lingering conversations, gold accented coffee tables bring subtle opulence, and a statement chandelier lends timeless elegance. Graceful wall mouldings, rich wood details and layered lighting complete the look.

Yet, the true beauty lies beyond the finishes. Family photographs holding years of memories, flowers arranged with care and a favourite seat where everyone gathers. These personal touches transform a beautifully designed living room into the heart of a home.

At The KariGhars, we believe luxury interior design should do more than impress. It should bring people closer and give life's most meaningful moments a beautiful place to unfold.
