Supine twists-
Are not as easy as you may think! Being on the ground is easy to forget that you still need to integrate your body as if you were still standing! Having the support of the floor can definitely trick you into relaxing too much 🫠. Remember, The more support you have the more accountability you need to stay alert and respect what is given💛.

Twists invite and ask you to continue connecting to your posture!

*neutral pelvis/spine!
*hamstrings/glutes participating and integrating into the pelvis… not hanging, collapsing, and dragging you down.
*Stay connected in your upper chest shoulder head neck too. Don’t let the twist pull your head down. Keep your inner lift and length from the bottom of pelvis to the roof of your mouth. Upper back chest remains expansive and wide side to side front to back!

As you twist, it’s so easy to shorten and collapse on one side. As a result, the pelvis is tucked under, and you loose length in the small of your back, and your neutral pelvis! Be mindful to keep the two sides evenly long!

It’s a common mistake to twist from your arms and shoulders! Remember to Rotate/twist from your waist/Abdomen.

Exploring a supine twist in figure 4 is a nice variation to help you unstick a bit more.🧘‍♀️

When moving into a supine Twist in figure 4, remember to hold your shape and rotate from your waist!

Try this spinal twist/rotation from all 4’s. Thread the needle! Can you see the similarities with a supine twist? What is different?

Now it’s your turn to try! And I hope you do💛

There is much to gain with a not so simple twist 🫠

-neutralizing to our body, mind, & nervous system.

-aids digestion and releases pressure/tension in abdomen/internal organs

-release low back and hip tightness/stuckness

-grounding and supportive

Posture in Pilates

If you practice Pilates, you know already the importance of posture.

What is balanced posture?
“Good (Neutral) Posture: The balanced alignment of bones, joints, and muscles that minimizes strain on your support system.”

And how do we find posture? is it something that we can just do? I would argue that it’s something that we build and have to keep practicing!

Posture is something I’ve been working on for a long time and being hypermobile really doesn’t help my situation especially when finding a neutral balanced pelvic center.

Also, if you have tight hips, which unfortunately, (if you’re a human being) most of us do, finding balance in our pelvis/hips can be quite challenging!

Although there is much to consider, and everyone is unique and has different scenarios in their own body, I have found that attention to thigh bone placement has been a huge support for myself and to my clients to not only find ‘balance’ in posture, especially in the posterior chain but to also help to decongest and open the front of the hips/front spine that can be stuck from the thigh bones pushing forward in the joint.

So I’m just here to encourage you to Maybe consider how your thigh bones are integrating into not only the long stretch series, but also in how you stand, move, and sit!

“For how we do one thing is how we do everything”💛

Heart & Head

Here’s a fun simple routine to keep your hearts and minds open, supple, expansive, and free✨💚

Shoulders, rib cage, thoracic spine are the 🔑 key’s to set you free.

Breathing in breathing out
looking in to understand, what’s out.

Grounding to rise and pulling in to expand and shine.

Expect some…
In and outs
Forwards and backs
Ups and downs
Side to side
Circling back
Circling forward
Shaking
And a lot of 😆 laughing

Let it go go go😘

Forearm balance ❤️scorpion
Pincha mayurasana ❤️ Vrschikasana

Do you have an inversion practice?

I love inversions! They are fun, great for circulation, building upper body/core strength, help with centering and mental clarity and not to mention open our perspectives with our head below our heart❤️.

There are many inversions and some are definitely more challenging than others!

In this clip, I’m highlighting, a forearm balance into scorpion pose. Yes, it is a challenging inversion yet also safer than balancing on my head which I don’t practice anymore since my cervical disc replacement and also provides more stability than going into a handstand!

i’ve been practicing this posture for 20+ years. It definitely has been a work in progress and was not always that pretty!

One thing that I’ve learned and I have found valuable to help me in all my inversions is the importance of lengthening my side body and creating enormous width and space in my upper back before attempting to turn myself upside down. 🙃

If you already practice this posture and or wanting to give it a try, consider how you prepare yourself to flip upside down! The value of shrugging my shoulders to my ears and breathing expansion into my upper back as I transition from horizontal to vertical has been a huge support to my practice💛🧘‍♀️.

✨have fun practicing and please join me at the bureau for Yoga. Dm for more info.

Le Bureau client spotlight✨
Karen Rico @alerico96

I met Karen in 2023 at LA Fitness in Seattle.  She would frequent my weekly yoga and mat Pilates classes I taught there.  Karen stood out to me right away.  She is someone that just exudes inner beauty with her kindness towards others,  her contagious smile, and uplifting positive energy.  I always looked forward, and still do, look forward to seeing her in class!

Karen has had a lot of change over the past several years!  I met her in a pivotal time of her life not to mention it had just been Covid where borders were closed and she was obliged to stay in Seattle!    When I met her I learned that she had been a professional Ultimate Freesbie player for Colombia but suffered a knee injury requiring ACL and meniscus repair. Around that time, Karen, was in route to business school in Canada but was unable to attend University due to borders being closed. Karens ability to stay positive and focus on opportunities instead of what could have been is inspiring and uplifting!   Thank you karen for sharing your positive energy and ‘go get em attitude’ with me and everyone you meet!

Karen now is married to JP and a mom!  She has 3 stepsons and Mille who is almost 2!  When she is not at Le Bureau she enjoys practicing and watching sports, reading and watching true stories, and being a mom!:)

“I met Brooke over three years ago when I was recovering from a knee surgery. Under Brooke’s guidance in both yoga and Pilates, I have grown physically, mentally, and spiritually. She has the unique ability to connect with everyone in the class, to meet each person where they are at, and create a safe space for everyone to meet their potential. Every class I can attend presents me different challenges with an emphasis on breathing, stretching, and the interconnectivity of the entire body to create body and mind harmony and balance. Instead of feeling drained at the end, I always leave feeling refreshed, thinking how to improve and how I can be a better version of myself.”  - Karen

Hip hinge

if you take lessons and practice with me, you know, I am obsessed with teaching the hip hinge!

It’s so easy for us to flex at our low back instead of hinging at our hips. This inability to hinge at our hips, can cause problems down the road, not only in our hips, but in our spine whole body.

In this clip, I’m practicing my hip hinge with the dead lift. It’s definitely one of my favorite exercises. I have learned that when i come to stand to stay grounded through my feet and keep my thigh bones back, even as I extend through the front of my hips.(that’s another reel).

Of course you don’t have to do a dead lift to practice your hip hinge, but it is an effective way to strengthen your whole posterior chain and the muscles that will help you continue hinging for the rest of your life!

Think about all the times you could practice your hip hinge during your day? Your whole body will love you ❤️

Drop in💚

In classical Pilates the “100” is usually the warm-up, which is a very effective warm up of course! That said I think it’s nice to spend a little time connecting to some basic functional movements and spend a bit of time, softening and releasing tension and areas of stuckness ….

Here is a glimpse of some of the things you can expect to do before you dive into your hundreds if you come take my Pilates class😊.

I know starting a movement class, especially if it’s new to you- can be intimidating😆
Taking a few minutes to notice your posture, expand your breathing, mobilize your spine awareness to all the parts of your body will help ease you into the workout, keep you safe and enhance your connections💪.

Surya namaskar☀️
Sun salutation

Sun salutations are a great way to celebrate and move our body.

Simply taking a moment to notice our posture and connect to our breathing is golden! On top of that… Sun salutations encourage us to stand with integrity, and to carry that ‘foundation’ as we breath in and out to help open up the back and the front of our bodies.
You really get a lot of accomplished with simply doing one round of sun salutation! I hope you take a moment and practice with me here.

Please join me tomorrow, noon, at Le Bureau as we celebrate the fall equinox and together practice finding our equilibrium within ✨with some ☀️ and 🌙 salutations🧘‍♀️

I love it how everyone who attends these classes digs deep and gets to work! Breathing, moving, feeling, connecting, releasing, strengthening, tractioning, expanding, softening, learning, growing, etc…
Our bodies, our hearts, our minds thank us every time we show up and choose to powerfully release our egos and tendencies to integrate more fully in who we are becoming❤️.
Thank you for inspiring me.

DM me if you’d like to get on my mailing list and learn about classes.

Downward facing dog 🐕🐶

This short clip highlights how to practice downward facing dog! I hope you give the posture a try!

Adho Mukha Svanasana is a posture. I probably go into at least once a day.

If you’re a Yogi, you know that this posture is quite common! Downward dogs are in sun salutations and is also a great transition between various postures as it neutralizes the spine when you’re coming out of back bends, Forward folds, side bend Twist, etc.

It’s also cooling posture being an inversion with the head below the ❤️ heart. It really invites one to soften inward as the posture itself helps create space and opens the whole posterior chain.. The benefits really are endless.

That said with most things, there is quite a bit of nuance with this posture. If you’re not setting your foundation with Awareness, it’s possible that 1-instead of creating strength in your upper back, you can create tightness and tension. 2-two If you’re not finding your hip hinge, you could be stressing your low back instead of decompressing and lengthening your spine.

There’s really a constant tug-of-war between upper and lower bodies, as you need a strong frame to help you lengthen between hips and armpits.

I hope you give it a try🧘‍♀️

please come practice with me in person at Le Bureau ✨

Kneeling knee stretches

You will surely be feeling your workout with the kneeling knee stretch series in Pilates!

In the Pilates method, The kneeling knee stretches are one of the foundational exercises you learn on the reformer.

Although The Kneeling knee stretches are part of the “beginner system”they are surely not easy! In fact, I am always surprised how challenging they are! I am always feeling the work in my whole body!

Similar to the stomach massage and short box series in the beginner system you transition between two spinal shapes!
Round and tall.

In this video, I wanted to highlight the importance of keeping a hip hinge, regardless if your spine is round or tall!

understanding how to hinge at your hips will help you not it only in your workouts, but in your life!

Also Remember that the ‘round back’ position we use in Pilates is a tool to help us connect more deeply to our spine top to bottom and bottom to top! So when transitioning to a “tall back” we feel more integrated front to back and side to side.

😘 XOXO
Happy practicing
