The bunny heimlich maneuver is something that most people have no idea how to do and have to look up in the moment if it's ever needed, which can make a very stressful situation even more stressful. After watching this video, we recommend you save it and then go practice on a stuffie yourself, so that you're prepared should you ever need it. DO NOT practice on an actual bunny. The bunny heimlich maneuver can be very dangerous to your bunny's delicate body and should only be used in a life-threatening choking situation.

Bunnies who are choking may be frantic, have their head up and back, exhibit open-mouth breathing, and/or have a blue mouth/nose. Choking is not common, but it's best to be prepared and know what you're doing ahead of time so that you can react as quickly as possible. Pellets are the food most commonly choked on, and bunnies who eat more quickly are at greater risk of choking on their food. There are toys like treat balls, forage mats, and puzzles that can help slow down and are highly recommended for a bunny who eats more quickly.

As mentioned in the video, regardless of what method you use, the most important things are that you support your bunny's spine at all times and wipe away fluids and materials as they come out so that they aren't inhaled. Don't give up or be discouraged if it takes a bit. Remain as calm as possible and keep going. Once your bunny is no longer choking, let them rest, keep them warm, and always get them to the vet. It's not uncommon for a bunny to develop pneumonia after a choking incident, and antibiotics may be necessary.

We'll save this in the Medical/Care Highlight on our page 🖤

Finding a great veterinary partner can be a challenge, especially for exotic pets. You need someone who is thorough, knowledgeable, but also someone whom with you feel comfortable. Here are some of our biggest veterinary green flags 🖤

• Taking the time to explain and educate so that you have all the facts. A great vet doesnt gatekeep information and will help you make the best decision for your furry family member.

• "Let's give it a try". A great vet will be willing to go beyond the books, use their intuition, and experiment responsibly when needed.

• Trying to save you money and meet you where you're at. Vet care can be expensive, but most vets aren't trying to nickel and dime you. The vets we use for @operation.obi are always cognizant of the fact that we're a rescue, they try and save us money, and they want to help.

• "I'm actually not sure, but let me take that away and get back to you". There's nothing we love more than a vet who can admit to not having all the answers. No one does. Being willing to take something away, research, and ask questions is so commendable.

• Compassion and Kindness. Our vets have hugged us, cried with us, and text us after hours to check in. They care so deeply and are always looking out for us.

Thank you to all the amazing vets, vet techs, veterinary assistants, and veterinary receptionists out there 🖤 by @obibunfuriends

Common Litter Box Training Mistakes:

1) Not Spaying/Neutering - litter box training is so much easier when your bunny's hormones are in check. Usually, after being spayed/neutered, bunnies basically litter box train themselves

2) Not Starting Off in a Smaller Space - start off in a 4' x 4' enclosure so your bunny can get familiar with the litter box. Gradually increase your bunny's space as they are successfully using their litter box

3) Not Using a Large Enough Litter Box - your bunny should be able to comfortably hang out and move around in their litter box

4) Not Keeping the Hay in the Litter Box - bunnies like to eat and do their business at the same time, so if you start out with hay outside of the litter box, they're likely to do their business outside of the litter box where the hay is located by @obibunfuriends

There's nothing easy about a creature who is delicate both inside and out, considered exotic from a veterinary standpoint, and a 10-12-year commitment. We've normalized neglect and abuse with hutches, cages, and the products we allow to be sold on pet store shelves. Rabbits are a high-maintenance, costly, long-term commitment and they deserve better 🖤 by @obibunfuriends

If you don't frequent our stories, you may not have realized that we recently moved 🏡 We've moved several times with our bunnies over the years and they always do better than we expect, but here are some helpful tips to make a stressful situation less stressful.

First things first, always know where your bunny first aid kit is and have it easily accessible for emergencies. For long-distance moves, always research rabbit-savvy veterinarians in the area before moving day.

If possible, cleaning before you move in the bunnies will help keep them safe and make the transition less stressful for them. We always recommend starting them off in a smaller space to help maintain litter box habits, keep them safe, and not overwhelm them. Try to keep to your usual routine and if you can, bring over blankets, beds, etc. as is to retain your bunny's scent. These will be comforting to them in the new space.

Having their favorite toys and treats on hand for move-in day offers a healthy distraction and comfort as well. Frequently check in on them, spend a little extra time with them if you can, and gradually expand their space as they settle into their new home 🖤

How to patch a carpet chew hole 🐰

Bunnies love to chew and dig carpet. We've had to patch the carpet of every apartment and home we've moved out of. Thankfully, you can patch a hole pretty easily with minimal supplies. You'll need:

• Carpet scraps - If you don't have scraps of the original carpet, you can often match it up to something at your local hardware store. If you can't find a close enough match, try cutting a piece from the back of a closet and using that for the obvious area you're patching while using something close enough for the back of the closet which will likely go unnoticed.
• Scissors and a box cutter
• Fabric glue or double-sided carpet tape

Steps to patch:
1) Remove any remaining layers of carpet to create a uniform surface for your patch
2) Slowly cut the patch to be a near perfect fit for the hole you're patching
3) Apply adhesive to the back of the patch
4) Firmly place the patch in the hole and allow it to adhere
5) Trim the carpet if there are stray pieces or height discrepancies to create a uniform look
6) Tell no one 🤫 and go get that security deposit back by @obibunfuriends

A reminder when you adopt to give the seniors, the misunderstood, and the repeatedly overlooked a chance. There's nothing they want more than a chance and we promise they're worth it 🖤

When we adopted Graham, we thought we were adopting an inactive, mellow 10-year-old. With love and proper veterinary care, Graham turned into a high-energy, curious little guy who gives us kisses and follows us everywhere. He just needed someone to give him a chance and I'm so glad we did 🖤 by @obibunfuriends
