I never know what my team is coming up with. Sometimes I'm randomly captured walking around the office and at other times I am asked to pose. Then the video shows up and I have to make a voiceover to complete the story. This is one good outcome. Please share with interested parties...😄😎

The second half of 2026 begins with a different kind of energy.
The past six months have been less about producing paintings and more about building foundations. Much of my time has been devoted to compiling the second edition of The Dawn Cultural Intelligence Report while continuing to lead Artstier's programmes, partnerships, and long-term institutional development.

It has reminded me that an artist's studio is much more than a place where artworks are made. It is where ideas are tested, research is pursued, partnerships are built, and difficult questions are explored long before a brush touches canvas.

One question has remained with me throughout this season:

What responsibility does an artist owe to the society that nurtures their practice?
I don't believe there is a single answer. Every generation must wrestle with that question in its own way. For me, it continues to shape my interest in the intersections of art, culture, education, history, diplomacy, and civic life.

As the months ahead unfold, my focus remains unchanged: creating thoughtful work, strengthening institutions, nurturing meaningful collaborations, and contributing—through both art and ideas—to conversations that matter.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Artstier, attended our programmes, collected our work, read our publications, collaborated with us, or simply encouraged the journey.
The work continues. Here's to the next chapter. 🍻💥

13.07.2026 ... MONDAY

Saturday was a brilliant outing with Bwari Hash House Harriers (BH3). I suspended my recently acquired "couch potato" lifestyle to heed the call of Bwari Hills.😂🤣

The company was warm, the weather was cool, the trail was rocky, wet and slippery, and it was a good run. 🍻 👊🏾

I have always believed that the purpose of becoming an artist extends far beyond decorating walls, homes, and public spaces. While there is undeniable value in beauty and aesthetics, art has historically served a deeper function: it has challenged assumptions, shaped public consciousness, documented the human condition, and helped societies imagine new possibilities for themselves.

Some of the most important questions facing our communities today, questions of governance, social justice, displacement, identity, education, development, and collective responsibility, are human questions. They are cultural questions. And because they are cultural questions, they are also artistic concerns.

This is one of the reasons I have become increasingly interested in the relationship between art and civic engagement. I believe artists possess a unique ability to interpret complex realities, humanize public issues, and contribute meaningfully to conversations about the future of society. Whether through painting, sculpture, writing, performance, or other creative forms, our work can become a space where ideas are tested, challenged, and reimagined.
For those of us who choose this path, it may sometimes require resisting the pressure to follow trends, fashions, or prevailing currents.

What concerns me is the possibility of a future in which artists become increasingly absent from the conversations that shape public life. When that happens, history continues to write itself, but without the benefit of our perspective, imagination, and critical insight. We risk producing objects of value while contributing little to the larger ideas that define who we are as a people.

I am not suggesting that every artist must become a political activist. Rather, I am suggesting that artists should never underestimate the influence of their voice, their literacy, or their creative practice within the broader social landscape. Art can do more than beautify a room; it can help shape a nation, and for me, that remains one of the highest callings of the artistic vocation.

“Onye Wetara Oji Wetara Ndu” is a deep reverence Igbo proverb, which translates to “He who brings Kolanut brings life”. Native to the tropical rainforests of West Africa, kolanut is a symbol of hospitality, goodwill, friendship. The breaking of Kolanut “Iwa Oji” is a spiritual ritual symbolising peace, communion with the ancestors and God. #abuja #culture #tradition #creatives by @obinwaegbe

One of the most rewarding aspects of working in the arts is witnessing the growth of young creatives who commit themselves to the difficult but meaningful journey of artistic development.
Today, I am celebrating Okunade Olamilekan, a talented artist, alumnus of Artstier's The Artist's Path Professional Masterclass, and one of the promising voices of his generation.

In November 2025, I had the privilege of writing the foreword to Blooms and Essence, his debut solo exhibition held at the British Council, Ikoyi, Lagos, an exhibition proudly co-sponsored by Artstier. It was a significant milestone, not only in his career, but also in the continuing story of what becomes possible when talent is matched with discipline, conviction, and consistent growth.
What continues to impress me about Olamilekan's work is his commitment to the human story. At a time when technology increasingly competes for our attention and shapes our experiences, his paintings remain deeply rooted in human identity, resilience, and cultural consciousness. Through his distinctive pixel-inspired treatment of form, he celebrates African womanhood with sensitivity, elegance, and a contemporary visual language that bridges traditional painting practice and the realities of the digital age.

His works are not merely portraits; they are reflections on dignity, ambition, transformation, and heritage. They remind us that art remains one of humanity's most powerful tools for preserving memory, shaping narratives, and affirming identity.
As a mentor, it is deeply fulfilling to see former participants of The Artist's Path continue to evolve, define their artistic voices, and contribute meaningfully to the cultural landscape. Olamilekan's journey is a testament to the value of perseverance and the importance of investing in creative development.

Congratulations and carrying the torch of artistic excellence with courage and purpose. The future is bright, and I am proud that Artstier remains a part of your story.

A Day in Her Life, acrylic on canvas (Tryptic), 90 x 240cm

This body of work continues my exploration of the feminine figure as both structure and metaphor. In A Day in her Life, the body is fragmented, stretched and reconstructed across a triptych surface, allowing gesture, movement and colour to carry as much significance as anatomy itself. The figures are intentionally incomplete, faces obscured, limbs truncated and contours exaggerated, shifting attention away from individual identity and toward the psychological and emotional rhythm embedded within everyday existence.

Rendered in acrylic on canvas, the composition operates as a unified visual field despite its divisions. The bodies cut through the backgrounds, breaking the surfaces into unstable geometric planes while simultaneously holding the entire structure together. Perspective and sensual realism are deliberately subdued in favour of abstraction, rhythm and design. Here, the feminine form functions not merely as subject matter, but as an active compositional element through which ideas of resilience, labour, routine and presence are negotiated.
The aggressive interplay of colour further intensifies this tension. Saturated yellows, reds, blues and pinks collide with scratched inscriptions, gestural markings and layered textures that evoke the density and speed of contemporary urban life. The result is a painting that oscillates between figuration and abstraction, intimacy and detachment, order and disruption.

Rather than presenting womanhood as static or idealised, A Day in her Life attempts to capture its multiplicity, the overlapping emotional, physical and psychological conditions carried within the seemingly ordinary cycle of a single day. The work therefore becomes less about portraiture and more about the architecture of lived experience itself.

I am pleased to curate the second solo exhibition of fast-rising contemporary artist Francis Oshorenoya David at the 1853 Studios, Mill 1 Gallery, Manchester, United Kingdom. This follows his debut solo exhibition, The Emotional State of Man, which I curated in Abuja shortly after the COVID-19 lockdown period.

I first encountered Francis in 2020 when he visited my studio with a body of deeply expressive works in acrylic and oil. Beyond the obvious talent, what stood out was the consistency of his visual language and the clarity of his artistic direction. I knew immediately that he needed visibility, guidance, and reassurance that he was on the right path.

Through a number of strategic opportunities, including exhibitions at Photocarrefour Gallery, Soto Gallery Lagos, and participation in the Made in Nigeria Masterclass facilitated by Artstier, his practice steadily evolved and gained wider recognition. His journey eventually led him to the United Kingdom, where he earned an MFA in Painting from De Montfort University in 2025.
Most recently, he completed a residency programme with Akoje Residency & Gallery in collaboration with The King’s Foundation, funded by Arts Council England.

With recognition from important British institutions and a growing international profile, Francis is clearly on a compelling path toward global relevance. I am proud to have witnessed and contributed to this journey from its early stages.

In the comments section is a recent press report by veteran art journalist Okechukwu Uwaezuoke published in This day last Sunday.

A Nation of Survivors, Not Systems.

We have mastered survival,
but neglected the systems that make survival unnecessary.

As artists, we are now archivists, curators, power generators, water providers,
all in a space where our primary duty should have ended in creation.

I do not worry about my work. I worry about the story of our time.
Will it be one of a people who built together, or as individuals who rose from the debris of failed systems?
