The Artist's Path kicks off tomorrow!

The programme was designed to expand the scope of creative professional mentorship and teaching, also to create a programmed interaction between field based professionalism and the learning curve.

We offer a special thanks to the exceptional talents that accepted to take time from their busy schedules to offer their guidance and life's work to this year's participation. We look forward to a most vibrant interactive month.

Appreciated!

Three years of observing artists has taught me that art is never just about what hangs on the wall. It is about memory, identity, discipline, culture, experimentation, business, vulnerability, storytelling and the courage to see ordinary things differently.

From artists, curators and creatives I have written about, I have learned that every practice carries a lesson if you are willing to look beyond the finished work. I am still discovering artists every day, listening to their stories and learning from the worlds they create. This is what three years of looking closely has taught me—and I am only getting started.

@artstier led by @obinwaegbe has consistently sought to upgrade the art ecosystem in Abuja and Nigeria by laying an example in capacity building in the visual arts sector. The DAWN is a publication of their activities each year. Thank you for the feature.

It is also a rare gift to encounter a curator and writer who does not only look at an artist’s work, but takes the time to understand how the artist thinks.

In his article, The Artist Is Not the Product, published in The Dawn, Emmy Egwemi @emmyegwemi reflects on the growing pressure for artists to remain constantly visible, available and consumable.

Using my practice and works as points of reference, he considers the quieter realities behind art: time, uncertainty, endurance, reflection and the need to create beyond the demands of the market.

Emmy has an uncanny ability to study people, especially artists, and reveal something of their inner world to his audience. I feel honoured to have my work considered within this thoughtful and necessary conversation.

Thank you, Emmy, for looking beyond the finished work and seeing the human being who creates it.

For copies of the publication kindly reach out to Obi Nwaegbe or Artstier.

“Onye Wetara Oji Wetara Ndu” is a deep reverence Igbo proverb, which translates to “He who brings Kolanut brings life”. Native to the tropical rainforests of West Africa, kolanut is a symbol of hospitality, goodwill, friendship. The breaking of Kolanut “Iwa Oji” is a spiritual ritual symbolising peace, communion with the ancestors and God. #abuja #culture #tradition #creatives

Today’s VISUAL STORYTELLING MASTERCLASS - Iconic Abuja exhibition was engaging, insightful, and genuinely forward-looking.
With a strong focus on how artists can use AI as a creative tool, our speakers Kike Oyewale and Obi Nwaegbe opened up new ways of thinking about storytelling in today’s evolving landscape.
The energy in the room said it all—artists in Abuja are not just watching the future unfold, they’re actively shaping it.
