Re:Tale at @theartshousetrust
Until 2nd of August.

PRESSURE COOKER.

These works emerged through pressure.

Wood carries the memory of time in its grain and knots. Steel is shaped through heat, force, and repetition. Clay passes through fire, where ash settles on its surface and, under intense temperatures, transforms into glass.

Each material is altered by forces beyond the maker’s control—growth, combustion, gravity, impact, time. The work emerges through a dialogue with these conditions, revealing the marks they leave behind.

I am drawn to making without a fixed destination. Rather than pursuing a predetermined outcome, I follow the possibilities that unfold through process. Making becomes an act of attention: listening to what a material offers, resists, and ultimately becomes.

These works are not about arrival. They hold traces of transformation, carrying the evidence of their own becoming. They are records of pressure, process, and the continual discovery that occurs through making.

REWIND EDITION: ALEX WILKINSON

What has Alex Wilkinson been up to since completing Year One of the Object Maker Aotearoa Fellowship? Here’s a snapshot.

Alex has been keeping things pretty hectic with community projects, arts advocacy work and as always a busy production studio with Mystery Creek Ceramics.

Highlights include organising the @Waipā Creative Trail with Tracey Hancock, spotlighting hidden studios and makers across the Waipā district, while also supporting the Rotorangi Pottery Extravaganza, a stop on the trail at Janet Smith’s Woolshed studio. She has also taught two nerikomi workshops in her own studio to a group of incredible potters.

At the same time Alex has been navigating a significant shift in her own practice leading into the upcoming Re:Tale exhibition at The Arts House Trust (11 June – 2 August) - which she is also leading the coordination of.

Busy - you bet, but with Alex, we’ve come to expect nothing less.

Its been both a pleasure and incredibly painful to make this work for this incredible exhibition.
It has pushed me out of my comfort zone (and I hate that!) but working with The Object Makers has been a privilege.

I am so excited to show you my work for RE:TALE at The Arts House Trust with the incredible makers Juliana Durán, Mel Ford, Eva Kerer, Bebay Millán, Birgit Moffatt, Samuel Montgomery, and Sarah Ziessen.

Come to the opening 12th of June at 5 30 pm at The Arts House Trust, I'd love to see you there by @objectmaker_aotearoa
