MUAY THAI for MMA by @obrien.kieran

What an honour it was to compete on one of the biggest grappling shows in the world last night @polaris_professional it certainly is the slickest looking with the most friendly and professional staff! Thanks for having me! I'm glad I was able to get a highlight reel worthy finish to boot.

It was also a great honor to receive a blackbelt from @michael.wood.7146 who I genuinely owe an infinite debt to for all the hard work he continues to put into me and the others @kaizenlancaster He really is the real hero of our little (but mighty) community! No-one facilitates and encourages the deep work required for skill acquisition than this man.

Thank you to @ljensbjj for always being-in-my-corner in life as well as Jiu-jitsu. Not only is she a great grappler (who's closed gaurd details she had taught me and revised with me this week - which I ended up using in the match) but she is now a top combat sports photographer to boot, making our gym and other grapplers round the UK get the visibility they deserve for their efforts. She's my real number one fan and I really don't deserve a girlfriend who is so utterly sweet.

Thank you to all my training partners past and present @kaizenlancaster who also coach me alongside Michael (and this is one of Michael's virtues that he encourages us to teach ourselves and others) and help me develop my skills and sharpen my game for competition. Adam, @wilding.luke @alexmcrypto @jimnasuim @swampjiujitsu @ljensbjj just to name just a few!

Thanks to my @scrambleacademyleeds brethren particularly @fredgreenallbjj @j.eatonbjj and @ryan_ritchie93 for helping me get battle ready for this match with all the hard rounds and coaching. Amazingly hard working and technical grapplers! Congrats on their wins! And I agree with professor Fred's battle cry in his victory post; which UK team is making waves in Jiu-jitsu like scrambleXkaizen? Let's gooo! by @obrien.kieran

Some great pictures capturing the atmosphere from Alex' brown belt promotion last week 🥋🤎

Some highlights from this weekends interclub sparring; precise footwork, misdirection and timing enables me to hang with the young guns.

Happy Birthday to one of my favourite MMA strikers @alexmcrypto Alex 'The Marksman' Makhonin. Please enjoy a highlight of one of his best performances against Team Kaobon standout Kev Axeworthy and some blurb about Alex's style below 👇

Long since retired, Alex went 10-1 in the UK MMA middleweight division bringing his unique and elusive adaptation of the Ukrainian/Soviet striking style into the MMA context. While his striking cousins Lomachenko and Usyk abused the Southpaw stance and angles for boxing, functioning like knights on a chessboard; Alex creatively opted to not cut weight (for speed) and play like the Queen 👑 accessing all squares from either stance around his opponent to defend from strikes and takedowns whilst sniping his opponents from long range; hence his fight monicker 'The Marksman'. Utilizing feints, stance switches and a high tempo ~ it's no surprise even UFC veterans were quoted as saying, "F***k fighting that guy!"

Alex subsequently greatly influenced the footwork and striking approach of myself and a number of athletes @kaizenlancaster though he prefers to spend his retirement trolling us with his best impression of Craig Jones' Jiu-jitsu. But if you ever see him dust the gloves off for a mess around, make sure to stop and watch a true master of martial arts at play, it's really something special! Happy Birthday Alex!

When playing guard, one of the best habits you can form is always looking for kuzushi, or to off-balance your opponent.
