“Mā te huruhuru ka rere te manu. Adorn the bird with feathers so that it may fly.” 🪶✨ At first glance, Vince Ropitini’s black and white tee may look simple, but the meaning behind it runs deep. “Manaakitanga is about giving someone what they need to soar. Support, encouragement and guidance. “On 5 November 1881, the peaceful, unfortified village of Parihaka was invaded by 1,500 militia and volunteers. Its charismatic chiefs, Te Whiti and Tohu, were arrested, their followers harassed and dispersed and their village and acres of carefully tended crops destroyed.” -Hazel Riseborough, Te Pahuatanga o Parihaka, in ‘Parihaka: the Art of Passive Resistance’, 2000. Published by City Gallery Wellington, Victoria University Press and Parihaka Pā Trustees. Today, 144 years later, I look back to Parihaka as I share my graduate collection. The Art of Passive Resistance is a body of work acknowledging my whakapapa and is an opportunity to share the stories and history of my people through contemporary practice. Today is a day of remembrance. He maungārongo ki runga ki te whenua.
