California's coast is under threat.

The federal government is reviewing California's Coastal Management Program in an attempt to weaken the protections that have kept our beaches public, protected marine ecosystems, and helped stop harmful coastal development.

This is a direct challenge to California's ability to protect our coastline.

NOAA is holding public meetings from August 10–12 and accepting public comments through August 22.

Over 900 lbs of oyster shells diverted from landfills 🦪♻️

These shells will be used to build oyster beds in Orange County that help combat coastal erosion, provide habitat, and improve water quality 🦪🦪

Huge thank you to @kingsseafood for their generous donation of oyster shells!

Before you head to the beach this weekend, remember you're sharing the shoreline with some very important neighbors.

The Santa Ana River mouth and Huntington State Beach are home to endangered California least terns and threatened western snowy plovers, which are nesting right now. Loud disturbances, fireworks, off-leash dogs, and people entering nesting areas can cause adult birds to abandon their nests, putting eggs and chicks at risk during one of the most critical times of the year.

If you're celebrating by the coast this weekend, you can help protect these incredible species:

🧨 Leave fireworks at home (they're prohibited along the Huntington Beach and Newport Beach coastline)

🐕 Keep dogs leashed and out of nesting areas

 🚮 Pack out your trash

🚧 Respect posted signs and fenced-off habitat

A few simple choices can make a lasting difference for wildlife. Let's celebrate responsibly and help keep our beaches safe for everyone, people and shorebirds alike. 💙
