What kind of future are we making?

🌿 On Oct. 17, Poets in the Grove Vol. 2 brings some of L.A.’s brightest voices to the Pine Grove at Barnsdall for an afternoon of poetry, possibility, and collective imagination.

In celebration of Susan Silton’s "Civilized Voices," we're exploring what happens when text, voice, participation, and public memory become tools for collective action—and what we might create when we imagine beyond this world as it is.

Hosted by @vinylowl & @aubrey.mayne presented by @losfelizwriters in partnership with @culture_la @barnsdallfoundation, DCA, @lamagbarnsdall & @21stcenturywriters

🫂Free + open to all.
🧺Outdoors. BYO picnic optional

#happyindigenouspeoplesday ❤️✊🏾🪶
#fuckcolumbus

When I was a little girl my grandma Mary Lee Iverson from Tulsa,Oklahoma told me about my Indigenous heritage, from the Cherokee & Blackfoot tribes. She showed me a picture of her grandma who was the same color as me in her full tribal wear, with 2 long braids down her back.

I've contacted a number of my aunts & asked about the picture, they've all seen it & know these indigenous stories in our family. Yet no one knows where it is, nor do they express any interest in finding it or doing the research.

So many of us Black folks have indigenous roots, yet know nothing or very little about it. It's no wonder why that is, & now we have been pitted against each other with divide & conquer tactics meted out by Amerikkka.

The Dawes Rolls (1898-1907) systematically misclassified and separated Black-Indigenous individuals—including people with verifiable Native blood—by placing them onto separate Freedmen Rolls or omitting their Indigenous lineage based on racial appearance, bias, and blood quantum rules. www.firsttribenation.com

How Misclassification Happened
• Separate Freedmen Rolls: The Dawes Commission (1898–1907) divided the Five Civilized Tribes (Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, and Seminole) into categories that included "by Blood," "Intermarried Whites," and "Freedmen". http://cherokeeheritage.org

Denial of Indian Blood: Even if individuals of African descent had biological Indigenous parents or grandparents, the Commission frequently refused to record blood degrees or classify them as "by Blood," segregating them onto the Freedmen Rolls.

Visual and Racial Bias: Commission enumerators relied heavily on physical appearance, community perception, and racial prejudices rather than oral traditions, family trees, or tribal culture. Siblings with identical heritage sometimes received different racial or blood classifications.

While Black-Indigenous people faced strict exclusion or reclassification, non-Native white individuals (often called "$5 Indians") routinely paid bribes or used political influence to get fraudulently enrolled as "Indians by Blood" to claim communal land allotments. www.itcnews.org by @ocea_lei

I recently sent my uncle Timmy a video of a public speech I gave at a college. This was his response.❤️🫶🏾 It was such a breath of fresh air, and a healing. Since I was shunned since 2009 when I came out as a lesbian, by my dad's religious side of the family for being Gay.

Proud to hear your story in your own way honest profound but not surprising to me is your knowledge of yourself being Queer which means being different.

I knew you were different on Berry rd when I was trying to spoil you with ice cream when ever I got the chance. Going to UCSC I was very much aware of the Gay Lesbian community you definitely were headed on a different path.

I was able to sometimes see it in peoples eyes and I could see it your eyes even back then very proud of you embracing your life and pushing to make a difference in your own way.

Your poem to your mom I loved it, it was filled with understanding and forgiveness a full circle moment. I am sorry I haven’t made many appearances in your life but as you seem to know instinctively life has its own path.

Very proud of you to have found your way personally and spiritually you are definitely an incredibly unique individual. Thank you for sharing love you uncle Tim by @ocea_lei

Hello all! I am sharing an article that I penned on the Women’s National Book Association, Los Angeles Chapter in this month’s Santa Monica Star (on page 7). I have been a member for years and am also the Board Chair of Membership and love sharing what this organization has to offer for members and those who are interested. This organization has been around for 100+ years. Check it out https://www.thesantamonicastar.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/SMSAUGUST2026Printed7.23-Reduced.pdf. The cost to be a member is nominal, but the benefits are Great! It’s a Wonderful organization with multiple chapters across the nation. Please reach out to me for more info on becoming a member and share with those who may be interested! It’s a Great addition to anyone in the world of writing, books and even those that love reading!!! I look forward to connecting with you. 😃 💕Stacy #womensnationalbookassociationla #becomeamembertoday #spreadtheword #authors #writer by @ocea_lei
