“grasp the reins and close your eyes”

when you go to one of your favorite sit spots, and for many moons and seasons you never see a horse there not even once

many cows, kestrels, meadowlarks, a string of bobcat sightings, burrowing owls, the badger in the burrow, and the badger skull

all precious

and on one visit, when the skies are a little gloomy, and your heart feels a little gloomy, and it’s just you and the bay laurel growing out of the rock, and from across the meadow four pairs of hooves amble down the slope, across the stream, up the hill, and with an unmistakable clarity of direction, no wavering in path or intention, two bodies of strength and grace arrow into your body, pressing into your heart, almost knocking you over. and with those eyes, staring into the allness of you. and maybe distracting you so their companion could see about the apple in your bag. and you share the apple, the three of you together, and it might be raining and there might be tears, and it’s usually both.
and you say thank you, and you leave and return some moons and seasons later, and this time the grass is dry, and this time you wonder if they are still around, and this time they are there to greet you, and they are older and you are older and so you have a photoshoot, and you say thank you again, and you leave again, and maybe you will see them again, and this goodbye is ok because you will always remember what it was like to feel the heart of a horse press into yours

like a stamp
like clay
like small steps
like grace

and when a moment this precious presses against you and you try to make something beautiful to honor that contact, to commemorate this feeling, and share a story so that others might feel a little pressed against and nudged in the heart

‘holy,holy’

watercolor & ink

when Nik passed in 2018 i was working in the mountains. the call of the Flicker and the bright pungent yellow of the Mimulus by the creek had a clarity to them I hadn’t experienced before. Someone in community, who was volunteering and passing through for a moment that summer, someone I wasn’t particularly close with, heard about how I had been touched by the long arm of grief, and gave me a book. in the years that followed that summer, The Wild Edge of Sorrow by Francis Weller moved from house to house, unread and touched only to be unpacked and packed again. Sometimes there would be a moment where I would feel a need to shed some weight and sift through this moving library and glance at this book, contemplating parting ways, since I figured if i hadn’t read it by now why keep holding on to it. and that moment would pass, and a different book would leave the collection, and this book remained. It remained until two summers ago, six years after it was gifted, when i found myself met with another particularly dark and sorrowful initiation and in searching for something like a lighthouse glanced at this beacon in the bookshelf.

what do we make of/in the labyrinth of timing and its mysterious cycles

within these pages a particular poem grafted itself onto me. The Healing Time by Pesha Gertler. this poem seemingly reaching more hearts in need by being seeded in another offering. something of the poetry in pollination. these words now grafted onto another body of art, and so it goes.

if i’ve learned anything it’s the power of movement, in the flow of one thing becoming another, of the cycles of thresholds, and what is asked of us in our labyrinths, how we turn lemons into lemonade and then plant the seed again knowing we will get lemons. how we turn grief into beauty knowing there will be grief again. how grief is its own beauty.

this is what I am apprenticed to, every time i hear the Flicker clear the air, and pass by the glowing yellow mouth of the Mimulus, nestled by the seepage of a spring, the testament of water🌀

‘shrine for uncertainty’

something to hold on to

when you feel that you are not, and haven’t been, surrounded
by the frequency of love and connection you desire in life
when you have withstood neglect and abandonment when looking around the present
doesn’t provide the proof to change the narrative or the conditions
when love feels scarce constantly
when staring into the abyss of this scarcity
the choice available, the choice i have here
is to be so undeniable in my love for myself
so undeniable in my embodiment and expression of love
that i write my own narrative, i write my own story
my own story about the love that i am
that is present in my life
the love that i am and how i share it with the world
this love, this undeniable truth, this love
and trust that this love will carry me into the arms of those i trust to hold me
the land that wants to hold me, the water that wants to hold me
i don’t want to be alone in love, in life
and my love deserves to be respected
my love deserves to be cared for, my love deserves dignity
my love deserves reciprocity, my love deserves witness
my love is powerful. my love is precious.
my love is undeniable

something to hold on to

‘shrine for inevitability’

watercolor & ink

“What if all the worlds in space
Would melt into one single place
And intertwine the human race
With other kinds?
The atom is an empty vase
A vehicle to know embrace
The way you feel
The way you taste
It multiplies

What if all the time between
The words we say and what we mean
Would roll as softly as a stream
That we could ride?

so much to share”

shrine for return

watercolor & ink

afflicted with if i smell these flowers
core reactions
tiny tremors
body striations
curled up
jagged and warped
a recurring uncovering
encapsulated seasons
churning of names and desires
of first kisses and lullabies
of broken
bones of
hand me down tears
stored in my stomach
ache bedrock soma
core reactions
tiny tremors
afflicted with how we smell these flowers by @oceanarms

over time
soaring, through
witness from above
celestial overture

over time
elapsed, elongated
epoch of entropy
belief, trust, hope
return, practice
relief, revolute

working
over time
collapse
frayed
burnout
dysfunction
destruction
premature death

oeuvre time
memory
complete body of work
retrospective
a collection
a mystery
beyond us
