Architecture that makes us happy again :)

Inspired by the geometry of ice, the GLACIER house explores the playful side of architecture. A composition of coloured glass, sharp geometries and shifting reflections, where Alpine glaciers become part of the architecture itself.

In 2023 I worked for a year as an architect on Sharaan, for Jean Nouvel. Still one of the things I’m most proud of.

The project is carved into the rock, in the desert of AlUla. Entirely excavated from the inside out, discreet enough that you barely notice it’s there. Nothing like the shiny, look-at-me projects Saudi Arabia usually gets associated with. To me it’s ambitious in a way that reminds me of the pyramids.

What makes this project beautiful to me is that Nouvel never wanted to add a building to the desert. He wanted to work with what was already there: the rock, the light, the horizons, the weight of the mountain. Going deeper into the site instead of building on top of it. Making the landscape more present instead of competing with it. You’re 80 feet deep in the rock, and somehow, still aware of the sky.

I got the job by messaging basically everyone who worked there on LinkedIn until someone finally answered (the confidence & delusion I had from day one!)

I’d just finished my bachelor’s, hadn’t even started my master’s, had no real experience. I was young and pretty clueless honestly, but I knew what I wanted.

A year later I left and went back to school to finish my studies, with a lot more to bring to it than when I started ,knowing that the kind of ambitious, metaphysical architecture I’d signed up for was actually out there.

That’s what made me want to go into architecture in the first place. I think it’s the same for most architects. So someone explain to me why we end up spending most of our careers designing the same offices and ugly housing blocks that no one really needs, except investors.

People have mixed feelings about Jean Nouvel’s work, but there aren’t many architects left with the freedom to push an idea this far, and to practice architecture on his own terms.
Forever grateful for the standards and ambition this gave me.

Coming back to this everytime I need to get reminded of the end goal 🦋✨
