How do we mobilise a town to change it’s behaviour and develop a lasting love for their beach town? Project White Sands, one of three OPP pillars and an initiative by Ocean Purpose Project aimed at inculcating lasting behavioural change by raising awareness and making beach clean ups a way of life.

Through beach clean ups, eco-gardening and exciting workshops, Project White Sands is based in Pasir Ris, a beach town in Singapore whose shores are where children, couples and families flock to on a daily basis, joined by wild birds, otters, boars and mangrove species of all types.

Massive algal blooms, transitioning economies, the plastic pandemic. The list goes on and everyday seems to bring new cries but what if there was a simple solution right beneath our noses all along?

It all starts with our seaweed and mussel lines. Introducing OPP’s second pillar, bioremediation. To harness the filtration properties of seaweed and mussels, OPP has deployed ropes around the perimeters of our local fish farms, creating a curtain of natural filters.

Along with this, OPP is constantly research ways to create a circular economy through seaweed and mussel bioplastics - a truly biodegradable form of packaging.

Want to find out more? Watch our video to find out what bioremediation is all about 👀

After a clean-up, what happens to all the plastic trash? At present, most of it is being incinerated in Singapore and this includes 40% of recyclables that are considered to be ‘contaminated’ when not properly rinsed or when mixed with non-recyclable material. But what if we can turn all that trash into treasure?

Introducing OPP’s last pillar, Plastic To Fuel. With OPP’s PTF unit, we can deploy this portable solution onboard maritime vessels, landfills and coastal communities to handle plastic waste. Waste can be transformed into lucrative low-sulphur fuel, carbon black and carbon nanotubes and lastly this will create a profit incentive for corporates and communities to collect plastic waste!

Learn more about our Plastic To Fuel initiative and see how this can be our future of clean energy 🔎

The funding and support we receive will help us continue developing and scaling our programmes, driving innovation, supporting communities, and turning purpose into tangible action for our oceans. 🌊♻️

This milestone belongs to more than just us. It would not have been possible without our clients and partners who choose to put purpose into practice alongside us. Every project, collaboration and commitment has helped us build the foundation for this next chapter. To everyone who has trusted us, supported us, challenged us and believed in the possibility of a better future for our oceans — thank you.

We’re deeply grateful, incredibly proud, and excited for what comes next.

Becoming a 1% for the Planet Impact Partner is more than an achievement. It’s a reminder that when we work together, our collective impact can be so much greater. 🌎💙

📍 OPP Beach Hub, Pasir Ris Park (Carpark E)

Ready to make a difference? Grab a friend and see you by the shore!

😷 Scroll through to find out more on the haze issue in Singapore too! 😷

🔗Sign up via the link in the bio

Will the haze cancel our beach cleanup? Not necessarily! 😷🌊
At Ocean Purpose Project, your safety is our top priority. Rain, shine, or haze, our goal is always adaptation, not cancellation.
When air quality drops, we rely on our strict A-B-C-D Event Continuity Model to keep our community safe:
🟢 PLAN A - PROCEED: Operate normally while actively monitoring advisories.
🟡 PLAN B - MODIFY: Keep it safe outdoors by shortening exposure, reducing exertion, and moving briefings indoors.
🟠 PLAN C - CONVERT: Bring the impact indoors! Beach clean-ups transform into hands-on marine litter or circular-economy workshops.
🔴 PLAN D - POSTPONE: Reschedule only when safe delivery simply cannot be achieved.

Whether you are joining us for a modified event or just navigating poor air quality on your own, please remember these 5 key actions from our safety SOP:
😷 Mask Up: Always use an N95 or particulate mask outdoors.
🚪 Close Up: Keep doors and windows tightly shut to block out haze or ash.
🛑 Limit Exposure: Pause strenuous outdoor activities and limit travel.
💧 Wash & Flush: Clear out pollutants with eye wash and sinus rinses.
🚰 Hydrate & Rest: Drink water, take frequent breaks, and always speak up if you experience breathlessness.

Our environmental mission continues safely: because protecting our oceans starts with protecting you! 💙🌍

Singapore is discussing a new Western Island that could bring together Pulau Semakau, Pulau Bukom, Pulau Sudong and surrounding islands over the coming decades.

The economic possibilities are enormous.

So is the natural capital already sitting beneath and beside them.

Singapore’s southern offshore waters contain almost all of our remaining natural coral reefs, alongside some of our largest and most diverse remaining seagrass meadows, mangroves, coastal forests and intertidal habitats:

🪸 250+ hard coral species have been recorded in Singapore — more than 25% of the world’s coral species — alongside 120+ reef fish species. Yet Singapore has already lost about 60% of its coral reef cover.

🌱 Around 45% of Singapore’s seagrass meadows have already been lost. Yet 9 seagrass species are still recorded across the Southern Islands.

🌳 The Southern Islands Biodiversity Survey recorded 60 mangrove and mangrove-associate species. Pulau Semakau alone supported all 26 true mangrove species recorded.

🚢 Roughly one-third of global container trade passes through the Straits of Singapore, while waters south of mainland Singapore can accommodate up to 800 vessels.

This is precisely why development and conservation cannot be at separate tables.

Instead of bulldozing ahead to build a new island, take a moment to “see this island, every grain of sand.”

Taking someone else’s pulau to build our own island while burying ancient ecosystems can’t be the solution.

🌿 What would you expect to see on a walk through the mangroves?

It’s a sunny day. You’re taking a stroll along the beach, admiring the gorgeous mangrove trees.

You might expect to see…

🌱 Lush green forests with unique, protruding roots?
🪶 Herons wading through the waters?
🦀 Crabs and mudskippers navigating the changing tides?

But what about…
🛍️ Plastic bags and fishing lines dangling on the roots of the mangrove?
🪴 A random pot sitting in the sand?
🚪 A “DOOR”?!

Yes, you read that right. 😳

On 22 July 2026, teams from Goodera and Johnson & Johnson joined Ocean Purpose Project for a hands-on beach cleanup — rolling up their sleeves, getting their hands dirty, and taking action for our coastal environment. 🌊💙
But this wasn’t just about picking up litter.

🌿 Mangroves are vital coastal ecosystems, providing nursery habitats for marine life while helping protect our shorelines from erosion and tidal forces.

During the cleanup, participants got to learn more about:

🔎 Identifying and picking up different types of marine debris
🌳 Why mangroves are so important for healthy oceans
🧴 The issue of plastic pollution — and how plastic waste that enters our oceans can break down into microplastics, which can persist in the marine environment, threatening marine life and even us.

And the impact doesn’t stop when the litter leaves the beach.

♻️ The plastics collected through our cleanups can be converted into hydrogen or low-sulfur fuel, giving difficult-to-recycle plastic another potential life while supporting a more circular approach to waste.

From unexpected finds to meaningful conversations, it was a day of teamwork, learning, laughter, and love for our oceans. 🌊✨

A big thank you to Goodera and Johnson & Johnson for showing up and making a difference with us! 💙
Want to get your team involved? Join us for our next beach cleanup!

🌊 LAST-MINUTE ADDITION: 3 EVENTS. 1 SATURDAY. 1 BEACH. 💙

We’ve decided to pack even MORE purpose into this Saturday at the Ocean Purpose Project Beach Hub, Pasir Ris — so come for a cleanup, stay for a conversation, and discover a piece of Singapore’s living maritime heritage.

🧤 9AM–11AM | COMMUNITY BEACH CLEANUP
Start the morning with OPP along Pasir Ris Beach, collecting plastics and other marine litter before they make their way further into our waterways. Gloves and tools provided — just bring yourself, water and sun protection!

🌏 11:30AM–1:30PM | BEACH TALKS: SUSTAINABILITY & INCLUSION LIVING LIBRARY
Together with Tzu Chi Foundation and Global Shapers, we’re bringing the “Living Library” concept to the beach.
Instead of borrowing books, you’ll meet living books — grassroots leaders and changemakers sharing real-life, unscripted stories about sustainability, social inclusion and community resilience across Asia-Pacific.

🛶 8AM–1:30PM | MUSEO MARITIMA: FROM HAND TO HULL — THE LIVING CRAFT OF JOE YAP
And here’s our last-minute addition!

Meet local craftsman Joe Yap, who hand-builds kayaks, SUPs and paddles from reclaimed and waste wood.
Joe will share his journey of traditional boatbuilding, the art of “Skin-Over-Frame” construction, and how materials others might discard can become durable, beautiful and sustainable ocean craft.

This is exactly what Museo Maritima at the OPP Beach Hub is about: keeping Singapore’s relationship with the sea alive not only through objects behind glass, but through people, skills, stories and living maritime knowledge.

📅 Saturday, 22 August 2026
📍 Ocean Purpose Project Beach Hub, Pasir Ris Park E

Come for one. Come for all three.
Clean the coast. Meet the changemakers. Learn from a craftsman. Rediscover our relationship with the sea. 🌊

🇸🇬 6 + 1 Things Ocean Purpose Project Learnt About Singapore’s Orang Laut & Orang Pulau

As Singapore turns 61, we’re reflecting on the people whose relationship with these waters began long before modern Singapore.

Through conversations with historians and the Orang Laut SG community, we learnt that Singapore’s maritime story is about more than trade routes and ships. It is also a story of island communities, traditional ecological knowledge, deep connections to the sea, and generations of lived experience across the wider maritime world.

Our 6 + 1 lessons explore themes of identity, heritage, community resilience, environmental stewardship, and the knowledge that has been passed down through generations. They remind us that as we look towards the future of marine conservation and the blue economy, there is also much we can learn from the past.

🇸🇬 Happy 61st Birthday, Singapore. May we continue to look forward while remembering the stories, cultures, and communities that have long shaped our relationship with the sea.

Did you know one line of seaweed and mussels can naturally filter over 14.7 million litres of seawater in a year?

Now imagine the collective impact of 420+ seaweed and mussel lines!

This National Day, OPP celebrates Singapore's hardest-working and cutest residents. From otters and sea turtles to mangroves, seaweed and mussels, these wild residents enjoy our coastal ecosystems every day.

At the Ocean Purpose Project, we're proud to work alongside nature to build a more resilient Singapore via our projects since 2018.

🐚 Project Langsir - a protective curtain from Punggol to Changi flanking Pasir Ris harnesing the natural filtration power of native seaweed and mussel bioremediation lines to help improve coastal water quality, real time solar powered water quality meters with publicly available data to aid decision-making for fish farms to water sports groups.

🌿 Project Tanah Air gives harvested seaweed a second life by transforming marine biomass into biocomposts, biofertilisers and biostimulants proven to improve soil quality in Nparks aiding regenerative agriculture and reducing synthetic fertiliser runoff into waterways.

💙 Project White Sands: Less performative and more thought-provoking beach clean-ups, community programmes and environmental education. 2000 pax per year trained to become stewards of Singapore's coasts.

👉 Swipe to meet the wild residents that call Singapore home and discover how they're helping shape Singapore's future.

Majulah Singapura. Go Beyond with Singapore’s wild residents!
